Roses that make stupid songs run through your head
Comments (26)Among the more inane things I do upon seeing certain roses, is to utter particular words or phrases -- some of which happen to be song lyrics. There are three of the roses linked below planted next to my compost bin. Every single time I visit that distant part of the garden and see her ever-present and always cheerful blooms, I spontaneously greet her by saying, "Well, coo coo ca-choo to you!" A somewhat wacky lyric fragment from a really terrific song . . . The gardener's compulsive utterances, however, probably qualify as being stupid. Here is a link that might be useful: Apologies to Simon & Garfunkel...See MoreYour thoughts on Digiplexis 'Illumination Flame'
Comments (79)Is it sterile both ways though? I guess so. I knew they didn't produce seed but I thought they might still produce pollen. In the world of rhodies at least, plants that are sterile both ways are rare but they do exist. (most of the weird 'quasi bigeneric' ones, of course, like 'Broughtonii Aureum', but also 'Viscy', which is sad because it would be nice to hybridize with) The Isoplexis*, I suspect, would be basically ungrowable here, which has been my experience with other Macaronesian flora I've tried in pots. (certainly Echiums, Aeoniums although I'm trying another one Annie's described as 'heat tolerant', and Canarina. The prior couple Aeoniums I tried will last for a year or two or three...longer than damn Echiums anyhow...but a long wet humid spell eventually makes them rot. Actually my memory banks just fired up: Geranium palmatum, from The Last Days of Heronswood (Whit Stillman's next film? LOL) lasted a whole summer, too, and didn't seem very bothered by humidity. That would have been in 1999 or so. But there was no way it was going to be winter hardy! I was such an optimistic young grasshopper back then lol. It was probably listed as zn 8 because I do think it winters sometimes in the PNW, but I wasn't in zone 8! * or should I say, the Digitalis formerly known as Isoplexis....See MoreBluestar oven door to hot, whats your experience?
Comments (46)I just ordered the basic RCS 36' it's going to take 3-4 weeks before I receive it so I can't say for sure that the heated door issue has been fixed, but I was told by several salespeople as well as a BS expert that the heat issue on the door has been addressed in the newer models. The doors now have double insulation, and you can see that on the double lined vents in the door. I'm really hoping that this is the case as I have a small child a hot oven door--no matter what oven--is a problem. I will update this if it turns out that the issue hasn't been addressed, but I trust what I have been told verbally and don't think I'll need to update this post....See MoreWhat if your parents had chosen your mate?
Comments (37)>but it does seem that the inlaw drama is virtually nonexistent, again, maybe b/c decision to commit is a group rather than a couple effort.>> For Asians there is a cultural difference in viewing marriage. A woman LEAVES her family and marries INTO her husband's. There is "in law" tension but it is not something you are ever going to see unless you know one of the principals very, very, very well. Asians do not display 'dirty laundry' in public; it is a serious "loss of face" for a family's reputation. One of the biggest tension points between me and my in-laws was that I am thoroughly American in attitudes and upbringing, and they were very traditionalist Asian; e.g., the social equivalent of my grandparents who emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1880's. It wasn't easy for them to accept a DIL who was a different religion and non-Chinese. I give them full kudos for doing it graciously. But as I said to a friend once, "It wouldn't break their hearts if I died in a car crash and DH married his father's goddaughter, the way they secretly wanted him to."...See Morepenny_sav
