I would like to offer some advice, please

My husband is a photographer and he does a lot of weddings, so I usually tag along to help. I have seen so many weddings that were unnecessarily fraught with tension, problems and chaos because the bride and/or her family tried to do everything themselves without a wedding coordinator. I think the bride already has a job that day -being the bride. She should not also try to coordinate, solve problems, placate people, worry about deliveries, etc. etc. A good wedding coordinator has done this many times, she has experience and resources a bride does not have. She is not a bundle of nerves that day and it is so much better for vendors, etc to have one designated person they can go to, instead of asking all the family who is in charge and getting opposite and confusing orders. Also, the bride expresses her wishes directly to the wedding coodinator and she carries them out, no room for buttinskis to put in their oar. And if something does go wrong, well, you have a scapegoat who is not a family member you will feud with for the next five years.

I know some people trim this important job out to save money, but I think it is well worth the expense, from what I have seen in my own experience. What price can you put on your sanity and serenity on this day of days?

You know, sweet pea, I'm seeing them suddenly all over this site. I think maybe there are certain key words and phrases that automatically generate a "bing" search. Let me try typing in the ones that were in asolo's post and see what happens -- save money, weddings -- I'm not embedding anything.

And I agree with asolo's advice. The peace of mind for all the months in advance is worth it alone; no worrying that you forgot something or that something that seems like a good idea will not work, for some reason you can't anticipate. Also, coordinators often can get discounts for you and they know lots of good tricks for saving money -- so in the end, they can even save money.

Socks, While what you say is true about the forest remember that the composting most of us do is hot composting. The forest uses a cold composting. The forest allows things to accumulate in layers with the new stuff piling up on top of the older stuff. This process takes a longer time and is probobly a better method recycling. However, we are too impatient to wait 18 months for usable compost. We want it fast. And actally there is nothing wrong with making copost the "hot" way, it is just that it is important to understand just how the two processed differ from each other. Actually, it is not even important to know how they differ, only that they do. The forest does not mix the material like we do. It lets it sit on top and slowly work its way to the microbes as more material is piled on top. We see the same thing when we lift up, even a thin layer of leaves from around our yard - even on concrete. Left long enough a two inch layer of leaves in the corner of the yard will be brown on top and jet black on the bottom. Hot composting does not belong in the garden, it belongs in our compost bins. Do not try to do hot composting in the garden by putting too much raw material into the soil. We change the situation considerably when we put uncomposted material into the soil as opposed to on top. Mulching our gardens is different. Here we put the material on top of the soil as as moisture barrier and a temperature regulator. But in this case we are doing the exact same thing that happens in the forest. The mulch decomposes from the bottom up in a slow but steady rate - never getting hot. Puttig a lot of raw material into the garden puts a strain on the microbial matter and results in heating up the soil. In hot areas this can be deadly to garden plants. It also results in excess nitrogen use on the part of the microbes. This can take away nitrogen from the plants that we are trying to get to grow. I am not a soil chemist or a soil engineer. But this much I do know, hot composting is not natures usual composting method, cold is. Don't put uncomposted material into your garden/flower beds. If it is uncomposted use it as a mulch or put it in the compost bin where it will be composted in a hot process. Nature does not mix the two processes, we shouldn't either. Tom

I don't know why Arc de Triomphe is often described as green and somewhat shiny. I grow mine in a lot of sun. It comes up a light blue-gray, and only ever gets slightly greenish blue-gray late in the summer. It keeps most of its wax all season, and is one of my top 10 favorite hostas. Early last season, just starting to leaf out: a week or two later, still in May last year; has nice flowers has lovely wavy leaves: This was taken the year before (2008) I have Marilyn Monroe and like it very much too. Didn't take a picture of it last year, and off hand am not sure where my CD pictures are.

I would like to get some Japanese, LA or Water Iris in different colors. I have been offered enough of the Tall Bearded Iris now so I don't need any more of those unless they are a brilliant color like red or orange, those I don't have. I don't need named Iris, they are just for me to enjoy. I have lots of plants to trade. If you have any extras please take a look at my list and see if you would like to trade. Wow, I'd urge you to remove the cover immediately. Rubber plant cuttings take off really nicely so long as you don't over-water them. I must have made over 30 cuttings from a few different plants (one in pot, two in ground) in the last couple of years, and all I do it take a cutting, remove the last leaf to make an open wound, let it dry overnight, and stick the thing in soil. I have never had one die on me or not take root. Don't remove the leaves--and rooting hormone is not necessary. I never even cut the leaves. That said, I plant, I water and then I basically don't water for about 20-30 days until it's bone dry. A couple of months of doing that and you're set to go. No need to even check for roots; you'll see new growth coming up assuming the season is right.

Great advice Scarlett -- And So True!

As the bride, your options are either to run around frantic, let everything slide, or delegate to someone else. And who better to delegate to than a professional? As Gellchom so accurately points out -- someone who really knows the ropes, the tricks of the trade, and can even get you discounts.

If you are having a big blow out wedding or if you are doing this all alone, then by all means hire a wedding planner if you can afford it. However I don't believe they are at all necessary if having a small or medium sized wedding. If everything is planned well enough before hand then there should be no problems except minor ones that the Mother of the Bride and groom can handle. The bride shouldn't have to do anything.

The thing with many people is that they fly by the seat of their pants. When my son got married, his MIL to be and I handled everything. The first thing we did was make a list of things and assign them a month and week to be done. As things got added we put them in the right time slot. We both had a copy of the list and would confer at the start of the month and or week to see who was going to do what. The wedding went like clockwork with only 1 minor snag which was soon ironed out.

The whole key was organization. That's what a wedding planner brings, but you can save a bundle if you are orgaized enough to DIY

The problem with the moms doing it themselves is that they don't get to relax, take it all in, and enjoy their guests.

Sweet pea, I don't see any embedded text but I'm using a browser that blocks it. IVillage has recently added Intellitext to the site which automatically picks up key words and makes links. Very annoying.

Delegate, delegate, delegate...our church (where my dd is getting married) has a wedding planner as part of the fees. She is only $200, and DEFINATELY worth it. I was so worried about "having to do everything and not be able to enjoy my dd's wedding". Now, I am putting all of it in her hands at a VERY reasonable cost.
