Help - how to properly address the wedding card

I need some advice on how to properly write the name of the couple on the envelope of their wedding card. The situation is this: The groom, who is my good friend, is marrying a doctor. She is retaining her surname. Normally I would address the envelope like this, "Mr. & Mrs. SMITH". Do I address it to Mr. and Dr. SMITH, Mr. SMITH and Dr. JONES (This one sounds very sterile and unromantic for a wedding), or I could take the easy way out and address it to THE SMITH'S?

If she is retaining her surname, it would Mr Smith and Dr. Jones.

Some people who retain their original surnames become quite irate when addressed as Mrs or Ms Hisname.

Her name is Jones, not Smith. You address her, him, and the two of them together exactly as you always did.

So don't call her Mrs. (or Ms. or Dr.) Smith; she may think you are deliberately ignoring (and criticizing) her decision. "The Smiths" is no good for the same reason.

For that matter, don't write "Mr. Smith and Dr. Jones" without the first names. I would write either

Dr. Mary Jones and Mr. John Smith
or
Mary Jones and John Smith

It might help to first determine the amount of material you need to have removed. Measure your yard and calculate the square footage. Figure you have about 1 ton of material per 100 square feet of yard (roughly). This will give you an idea of whether bulk trash pickup will work for you. Im guessing they will only take so much at one time. I have also put gravel and such in my waste container for pickup but you can only get a couple hundred pounds in there at once and depending on the amount of material you have, that method could take weeks or months to get rid of it all. Another option, as you noted, is to get a roll-off box and fill it yourself. A company like Waste Management can provide this service. I would think you can just put the material in the box and not bag it up but you may want to inquire further on that issue. A one time roll-off delivery and dump will cost you about 500 bucks. The next option is to hire a clean-up company to come in and get it all out of there for you. This is the most expensive option because now you are paying for labor as well as the dump fees. The up-side is you dont have to deal with the material yourself and they will get it clean down to the soil grade for you. If you get to the point where you want to explore this option further I can recommend a few companys that provide this service.

"So he built the sloped mudpan, coated it with Hydroban and installed the bonded flange drain with specified 1 1/4" height from the substrate and then when he went to install the tile he said that in order to get the tile height to what Laticrete specifies it should be (1/16" higher than the top of the drain) he had to build up the mortar and basically try and follow the slope with 1-2" of mortar. " If that's how he installed it, he completely misunderstood the installation instructions of the drain. The drain flange gets installed so the rim of the flange is 1-1/4" above your FLAT PLYWOOD SUBFLOOR. Not 1-1/4" above the sloped mud bed. If that's what he did, it's completely wrong. Again, the drain flange should have been installed so the rim of the flange is 1-1/4" above the subfloor. That 1-1/4" gap between the flange and the subfloor then gets filled with deck mud, and the deck mud then slopes upwards as it runs from the drain to the walls so that it's 1-1/4" thick at the drain and, let's say, 1-3/4" thick at the walls. An increase of thickness of 1/4" per foot over the 2' distance to the wall. When the sloped mud bed is complete, the drain flange should be set perfectly flush in the deck mud. Then the mud and the walls get hit with two coats of HB. You then tile the floor but leave a few tiles out around the drain. The actual drain cover (the metal grid) is attached to a threaded plastic piece that gets threaded (or screwed) into the drain flange. You thread it down so the top of the drain will be at the approximate height of the top of the tile on the floor. In your case, for standard tile, about 1/4" above the flange. So the drain height is set in relation to the tiles already set on the floor. Then you complete the floor tile by filling in the remaining tiles around the drain. If the deck mud was properly sloped, all you'd need is the standard 1/8" thickness of thinset to bond the standard 3/16" to 1/4" thick tile to the sloped and Hydrobaned shower floor. The beauty of a topical membrane like Hydroban is that with the Hydroban membrane being right below the tile, there can be no deep wetting of the shower floor like with a traditional deck mud bed where the membrane is beneath a 1" to 2" thick layer of deck mud. Your guy put 1-2" of mortar or mud on top of your hydroban membrane. You have a porous tile (marble) on top of that mortar bed. That 1-2" setting bed will likely saturate over time. If the bed does saturate, the moisture can bring minerals from the setting bed with it through the marble and grout as the moisture evaporates, you can end up with efflorescence on your marble and/or grout. And with the bed holding moisture, it can end up being a mold/mildew mess. Those are not certainties, but they are possibilities. Also, if he used thinset to make up that 1-2" thick bed, that could also be the reason the floor has birdbaths. Thinset is designed for "THIN" tile setting applications. Roughly 1/2" thickness max of thinset. The reason is because as thinset cures, it can shrink. That shrinking could pull the tiles this way and that, causing birdbaths here and there. I don't mean to be an alarmist. But if I'm reading your post correctly, your installer screwed the pooch on your shower. If you haven't seen it before, watch this Laticrete video. There's a bit of an intro, but do pay attention to the installation of the drain flange at about 2:30 into the video, and the installation of the threaded drain at about 4:30 into the video. The Laticrete system is an excellent shower system. Sorry for you troubles.

I should have added to be clear - that the wet items done in a sanitary cycle (as well as the heavy duty cycle) are cold when I transfer them out of the washer as soon as the load is finished - whereas they weren't in the past.

Help, my range doesn't fit properly

What kind of cabinets do you have behind the range? Are they regular shelves? It seems like the cutting into them in order to put in the electrical and gas connections would be fairly minor. It shouldn't take much space in the cabinets - a few inches high and a couple of inches deep along part of the 30" of the range. If the range can fit flat against a wall, that probably means just the space for a junction box and for a gas outlet and shut off valve. So you won't be loosing much storage space. In most places, code requires having an accessible shut off valve for the gas. We found the cabinet behind our rangetop to be a convenient location for it. The GC may have intended to put in a spacer instead, but it may be better to not lose floor space to a spacer all along the cabinets and have a little lost space in one cabinet. I don't understand why you would have to cut into the cabinets beside the range - it should be possible just altering the cabinet behind the range. I also don't understand why the range isn't going in all the way now - does part of the range project in back? Normally when a range goes against a wall, the gas and electrical connection are recessed into the wall but the range itself doesn't stick into the wall space at all. So your range without the connections having been put in should be able to slide all the way in. Are you sure that the cabinets are installed square? I wonder if they are a little off so that the space between the cabinets gets narrower as you get to the back.

It's not an invitation, though -- it looks like the OP is asking how to address an envelope with a card for the couple. I don't know whether she means to mail the card or hand it to them. If she's going to hand it to them, she can write "Mary and John," or for that matter, she doesn't have to write anything. If she's mailing it, she should use either "Dr. Mary Jones and Mr. John Smith" or "Mary Jones and John Smith."

I don't think she doesn't know that.

I think the real question here is whether she can find an excuse to address Mary as "Mrs. Smith" or "Mrs. John Smith" instead of "Dr. Jones." It seems like she is uncomfortable with Mary's and John's choice about their surnames and is looking for an etiquette excuse to ignore it.

Believe me, that is exactly what they will conclude if you insist on disrespecting their wishes; they won't buy that you thought you were following some (nonexistent) etiquette rule about calling married women who you know have not changed their names by their husband's names. They know there is no such rule or convention, and they won't believe you if try to protest that you thought "that's how it's done" or "that's what I thought you told me you wanted."

Her being a doctor is irrelevant except that she is styled "Dr. Jones" instead of "Ms. Jones" -- the rules are the same for any woman who kept her name, not just professionals.

Some people use one name professionally and another socially, but this couple haven't given any indication that Mary intends to use Smith for any purpose. If they had, or even left room for doubt, the OP wouldn't even have posted; she just would have addressed the envelope "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith" (I assume; she actually said she would ordinarily write, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," which sounds more like it referred to an envelope she was planning on handing to them, not mailing).

Anyway, the point is, they made their choice, whether or not it is one the OP likes, and the correct, polite, and respectful thing to do is to honor it. But if you are going to hand the couple the envelope, you have a perfect out (at least for this occasion): just put their first names only or nothing at all.

The card is to accompany the gift. I want to do what is correct and respectful. The groom is one of my closest friends and I don't want to insult his very wonderful bride. I will use Dr.X & Mr.Y. Thanks for your help everyone.

Because he is one of your closest friends, it would be more approprite to use their first names rather than being very formal, as if you really don't know either of them.

That is the correct, formal way. The "and" indicates they are married. If you were to send it to them before they are married you would list her name and then his on the next line, no "and". Because she is the titled person (Dr.) her name is listed first whether they are married or not.

DO NOT address them as Mr. and Mrs. if she is not changing her name. I did not change my name and it bugs me to no end that people do that. I am not Mrs. anything because you are only a Mrs. if you change your name.

You are not insulting the groom by listing her first. That is just the way it is done in this instance.

What Sue36 wrote above is correct. I am a professional, paid Calligrapher and have to "address" these situations all the time when I write invitations and such.
