We would love to have a string orchestra play at the wedding but can't afford the expense. Can anyone suggest an alternative besides recorded music?

Solo piano, piano and flute, celtic harp, smaller combo, classical guitar...
There are lots of possibilities.

CAn you get a student string quartet? Cheaper and probably better.

Check out the music program at the local high school or University. I know ours plays many community events and it might be possible that they would, or know of someone that could, play at your wedding.
