I love wisteria and think theyÂre much maligned! The problem is not usually with the wisteria but that the owner of the vine does not do the necessary maintenance. Having said that though, I would never grow one on a flimsy panel with the intent to use it as a screen to block the neighbours! The easiest/safest way to grow a wisteria and keep it from eating the world is to grow it as a stand-alone tree or bush. That works especially well for the Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) which has shorter flower racemes than the Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda). The long racemes of the Japanese ones show to best advantage when hanging down from a height  either from a tall pergola or grown as a tall standard. It is easier to grow the Chinese type to produce a good display simply because it does not need to be as tall. But prune, prune, prune is still the essential step. I planted our Chinese wisteria as a stand-alone (with supports while it is young) in 2001. It bloomed for the first time last May. ItÂs quite a sight in bloom and an unfamiliar one for some people  we had people stop their cars on the road and come ask us what it was when it bloomed! Here it is on June 1 2006 as the blossoms were starting to fall: So, donÂt be put off from growing a wisteria but site it carefully (not on a flimsy support!) and control its growth. It is not a low maintenance vine but it is a beautiful one and well worth the time and effort in my opinion!

Where we used to live in Zone 7 wisteria was a beautiful monster, but it CAN be made to mind. One neighbor, who we always referred to as my Jewish grandmother, had it trained very well. It grew over her breezeway, and it did not dare to step out of line! Another neighbor on the other side had it in the middle of the yard as a sort of shrub. It did well, bloomed nicely, and behaved itself. However, when she subsequently sold the house, the new owner spent several years running it over with his riding lawnmower trying to get rid of it for reasons best known to himself. Rrrrrrrrrrrrm! Crash! Rrrrrrrrrmmmm! Fut fut fut choke sputter Rrrrrrrrrrrrrm! Needless to say, the wisteria won. All he did was tick it off. Eventually, they reached a sort of truce. It stayed where it was, and he did not scalp it anymore. My parents have wisteria in their zone 7 garden, but it has only crawled moderately up a support up from a pool of tendrils in the shrub-esque form, not attempted a coup of the house and surrounding environs. Now we're in Zone 5b, and it seems to be less of an issue since while some folks have it, you do not see near as much of it as in the south. Perhaps the winters keep it in better check?? All that to say, yes, I would move it. No, I would not freak. Maybe a nice sturdy pergola in the middle of the yard with the wisteria climbing over it, a hammock in its shade, and a cool drink on a small table beside your favorite book?

Well, been so busy...like a chicken with my head cut off...but got going on the copper roofs....YES! I actually just cut and folded the copper sheeting to the roof...easy peasy...I kinda like the rustic-ness of it and will call it done! I had a issue getting the copper tubing swirl attached, but after cleaning to get the oxidation off, it went better, am concerned with the solder and can't find my copper patina, but will leave it for now, am gonna let it all oxidize(turn green) anyways...I think the copper looks real whimsical like this and will have better pics to come as this is going pretty fast.... How deep is the arbor? Most of them that I have seen are only about 15 to 18 inches deep, so the tulle fills it fairly well if you use the 72 inch wide type and not the very narrow tulle. However, you may not have the wide type in the U.K.
