cancun in spring 2006

What do you think about Cancun next spring? We would be going during spring break which is big bucks. I am worried about the surrounding areas still be rough due to Wilma. I know the hotels should be fine but..... Any thoughts?

I have a timeshare at the Gran Melia Cancun and they are not expected to be up and running until April - Cancun's infrastructure is not the most efficient under normal circumstances, so I have no idea how long it will take for electric and utilities to be back in operation. I have heard mixed reports that the airport may not be operational for a couple months, not to mention that most of their beautiful beaches are gone. I think you may just have to wait a couple months before you decide. I certainly hope that they get things fixed soon, so that those wonderful people can get back to a normal life.

I would keep a watch on www.tripadvisor.com, click on cancun and then go to their forums, they have people that live near Cancun that will be posting info on the site.

Cancun is very important to the Mexican economy. I would expect that they will make repairs to that city a high priority. I wouldn't worry. You've got a number of months before the trip.

The Mary Lou Heard Memorial Garden Tour for 2006 will be held on Saturday, May 6th from 10 AM to 5 PM. It has been a big challenge for a very small group of dedicated gardeners to organize, so will all of you please spread the word? And note that this year the tour will only be one day, not two? Tour descriptions will be available for download on April 20th at: www.heardsgardentour.com. There is also a list of supporting nurseries that will have the "official" tour booklet as in the past. Our home is on the tour, and we have been helping out with the final pieces, but we came in very late in the process. To anyone who has shown their garden in the past, please think about doing so again? And encouraging gardeners you know to do the same? It is a real challenge to locate the gardens without Mary Lou to ferret us all out and prod us into showing. So y'all call your friends and come on down, y'hear? I think it is safe to say a good time was had by all. Thanks Marie for the wonderful GW collection of poems. If anyone missed it, I can send you a copy via snail mail if you send me your address. Thanks all for the great eats. And thanks everyone for stepping in and making the food thing happen. I was neglectful of that duty, and I am sure glad I have GW friends I can count on. As many of you know, for me it's all about the plants. The wide aray of plant materials brought is a testament to the varied tastes we have. Always an interesting and learning environment for all. And maybe most of all, thanks everyone for the clean up. Not a one orphan plant was left behind ant the end of the day for me to deal with, and the house is tidy. Al in all, a very satisfying day. Hi all!! I mostly hang at other gardening sites, namely, the microherd with the old SCM convo folks. (But did I mention I have been to MD6 to meet Alfie and the small person! So that's gotta count for something, right??) :-) Anyhoo, Beth, we must be swapping places! lol! I am coming down from Syracuse to attend a wedding in DC that weekend. I was NOT looking forward to this trip (in fact, I was looking for ways to get out of it) until Alfie casually mentioned the swap and I realized I could go!! So, if anyone has plants that don't do well in MD/VA 7 and you think they'd be suited better for the frozen north, bring 'em!! ;-) I will be bringing blondies, and possibly some garden variety (ha!) hostas. The hostas here are j u s t starting to poke their eyes through up here. We don't even have tulips blooming yet, for Pete's sake! And did I mention, frost warnings this week??? Looks like a lot of progress has already been made, so I bet it will be a go way before Spring Break. I hope I can plan a trip as soon as my hotel is back up and running.
