Info wanted re the little islands off of Puerto Rico

We are thinking about taking a quick trip for our anniversary. Someone suggested Puerto Rico b/c it is a quick direct flight, and to stay at one of the little islands. Has anyone done this?

i had a two week vacation in puerto rico and it was absolutely fantastic. traveled the entire island. the islands you speak of are culebra and viacez (sp?) culebra is a great place it has a beach there, flaminco beach that is picturesque caribbean white sand clear water beach. The best part is its a national park so it has no ugly high rise hotels. it has a romantic little hotel off to the side with great service beach side service too. if you like lazy days on the beach this is the spot for you, don't be afraid if you don't know spanish (though it helps) the people are very friendly. Its actually a national park, so you must be mindful of things like littering... don't forget your hamocks there are lots of coconut trees...

viacez is very nice too with nice beaches. mainland puerto rico has beautiful countryside, i traveled to every park area including el yunca (sp?) national park, the only tropical rain forest in the national park system, if you are able bodied and like hiking there are some fantastic views hidden streams flora/fauna to be seen... camping out in the rain forest was one of the best experiences i've ever had (no poisonous snakes on the island don't worry) nothing like picking your own mango's banana's and grapefruits for breakfast, i went in december and the hi's were around 85 low's around 65 at night, perfect...

check out the bioluminescent caves, the natural hot springs are great (city?) stayed in the national park in the mountains where you get incredibly deferent scenery. ricon on the west coast is a famous surfing town mentioned in a beach boys song... you can rent furnished apartments per day... you run into all kinds of international travelers too

oh don't forget to see aricebo observatory. i spent zero time in san juan (capitol) its pretty slummy from what i saw while traveling out of it. peurto rico is like its own continent. oh the beer there can only be sold in 10 oz cans, try the medallo! its great!

Keriann we stayed in Dorado and I'm so glad that we did. Where are you staying? It's fairly isolated but I like that and the beach that the resort was on was spectacular and not crowded. It was in the mid to upper 80's but was very comfortable. You must have a car if staying in Dorado or you'll be at the mercy of the taxi's which will cost you an arm and a leg to get into town. Just book a rental car before you go and a shuttle will take you from the airport, just like anywhere else. I think we used Avis but all the big companies are there. We brought our GPS but they'll give you directions to wherever you are staying. If you have a GPS I'd bring it or you can rent one with the car. Like I mentioned they are terrible drivers and think nothing of just stopping in the middle of the road! There's plenty of local restaurants in Dorado as well as the fast food places. We had a condo so we went to the grocery store and usually had lunch in the condo or at the pool bar. Schedule the biobay and or the bioluminescent bay tour at least a month before you go. That was our mistake. All the tours were already full when we were there. You also need to make sure that the moon is at a quarter or less when going to the bioluminescent bay. It's not that far from Dorado, maybe an hour. Even the western side of the island, Rincon, Mayaguez, etc is only about 2 hours from Dorado. Have a great trip.

The closest I have been to tropic is hermosa beach calif, and a couple days in Jacksonville just ahead of a hurricane. To a miserable cold Michigander California had something fabulous: fluffy dark red porous soil. When it rained the rain went in like a sieve. Michigan soil by contrast (except for the sandy sites) makes a heavy dark mud when it rains. It holds the water in dirty puddles. Water gorged earthworms coating the sidewalks after a summer rain are childhood memories. Calif and Florida dirt seems light and fresh. Also the succulents. So many plants had thicker leaves or waxy flowers giving a richness. Florida had a scent - spicy-musty that might have come from all the mulch used. My imaginary tropics is defined by a warm and somewhat humid air, plant scents, and especially birds, parrots and exotics with louder calls and brilliant colors. The nights are not cold (like california). There would naturally be more water: waterfalls, streams, ponds, fountains. A palm tree or two would not hurt but aren't required. I think of flowers colored white, pink, red more than yellow, orange. Funny that in Michigan I find plantings with white blossoms cold looking, but in a tropical setting I would find them rich and warm looking. Wouldn't expect to see a field of blue flowers in the tropics.

It was as beautiful as ever there and this time we added the lechonerias to the trip. Some of the highlights for me, lots of new fruits to try and more of the great ones from last year. One of the gents that came along has family in PR and offered history and background on many aspects of PR living. Not to mention he spoke fluent (Caribbean) Spanish and me living in CA I hear Mexican Spanish all the time but they do have subtle differences. The best meals we ate (to me) were at Siglo XX (Signal 20) just around the corner from our hotel. Excellent, authentic PR cooking, one treat was breadfruit tostones, mmmm. The people at the Howard Johnson's in Mayaguez were very kind and helpful, not to mention they enjoyed all the strange fruits we shared with them (and a few guests nearby). We toured the USDA facility in PR, what a beautiful compound, nice people, with an amazing collection of trees. To top it off, we had Sadhu touring the grounds with us, sorta like having Phil Mickleson playing miniature golf with you. Very informative to say the least. All the farms we visited were amazing, beautiful fruit trees surrounded by lush landscapes punctuated with vibrant heliconias and gingers. The people and their employees were very kind and generous with their time. I think like many of us, they enjoy showing off their collections even though their collections cover acres. As for bringing stuff back, there is a long list of what is allowed with inspection. I had plans of bringing fruits back to a friend of mine who brings me fruit from the OC but did not want to deal with any inspections or delays that might make my 15+ hours of travel any more difficult. So in the end, the ladies that clean the hotel room will be enjoying a few more strange fresh fruits. boy I sure could use a bite of durian now, -Ethan

Back. I'm pleased to report that my DH and I have finally found a location we agree upon. He thought nothing could keep him from lusting after the Caribbean and I love places that have a bigger urban area. Aruba was a compromise that neither one of us loved. PV was perfect. The people are great and the food was terrific! I loved the location by the marina, as it felt like we had two separate vacations. The Marriott was fabulous. We went downtown for four of the days/nights. Never had a bad meal. Daiquiri Dick's was the only place I wasn't nuts about (over-rated and priced, imo). Victor's in the marina was cheap, fun and delicious. We ate there twice. The duck I ordered at Kaiser Maximilian was the only time I wasn't eating fish, of some sort. Caio Tres was a real find. Beautiful place and service, with very low prices considering the quality. Jen, if you eat dairy, their four cheese eggplant dish is supposed to be fabulous. Liked Joe Jack's, too. The only time I wasn't deliriously happy was during the afternoon hours downtown. I really can't take heat in any form (explaining why I like Europe in the winter). My hair ended up being a salt lick most days down there. Next trip (yes!) we'll do that area in the evenings. Soooo, what started up as my "throwing a bone" to DH, has ended up with our finding a new winter vacation locale. Thanks to you, both!! Funky, great to see you pop up on GW! I'll be emailing...
