Visiting LA and San Diego

Hi,
I am planning to visit LA and San Diego during first week of September. I am interested in plants, scenic points, nature.Is there any suggestion regarding the weather(I can't take hot temps), places to visit? Interesting places to take teenage kids? Any extra preparations need for those of us travelling from East coast( by air)?Would appreciate and suggestions.

The San Diego Zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Plan on it taking a day, but worth the time and money,
