New to vacations

Ok now don't laugh but I've really never been on much of a vacation other then a trip to a beach. But 2009 is going to be different. The family will be having a big milstone in the early part of 2009 and I want to plan a vacation to a resort beach place on an island (Hawaii or any of them south of Florida). And the wife will want to do some touristy stuff and the kids are still small under 7 and over 4. So being that I've never done this before where do I start. Any recommendations or suggestions or even places to stay away from.

RE: New to vacations

Just saw the post with no responses and thought I could give you a couple of places to start. First congratulations on deciding to take a "real vacation", you will be making family memories. When we are taking a vacation I research it to death! Tripadvisor.com, expedia, travelocity are a few sites that will be helpful. I always read tons of reviews of different places, things to do and places to stay. This will help you narrow down where you would like to go.People give there honest opinions of places they have visited. You definitely need someplace that is kid friendly. Remember if you are leaving the USA you all need passports, even the kids. All inclusive family resorts are a good place to start. They have kid programs and even offer babysitting for a fee. Or what about a cruise? Have fun.

with kids and young ones, my first thought is disneyworld/land...my adult kids went on the disney cruise and LOVED it...another themed park and in ca, is legoland. it's in san diego county, so you have access to the zoo, wild animal park, and several other family friendly locations.

you don't mention what part of the country you're in...with kids and traveling, the shorter the trip the better...that's why i hesitate to suggest the islands...

RE: New to vacations

We live in the Mid West close to St. Louis Mo. The kids can usually handle a 12 hour car ride so I'm not to worried about a plane ride. One thing I noticed is that St. Louis no longer has direct flights to anything worth while really except I noticed Orlando. One thing I thought was really odd was that a flight to Orlando in a few months advance was more expensive then a week or so out. I thought flights were usually more expensive they closer they got to the date.

We've gone to a few beaches and researched them like cazy but when we got there everything was well over glorified and it was more of a let down then what most information that we found even personal reviews. That's why I kind of posted on here. This seems a little more personal and able to ask more questsions then "this place was GREAT" type of review.
