Tips for Portland this August

We'll be going to Portland, OR this August, and taking kids (age 12 & 13). Any tips for where to stay and what to see (besides the Rose Gardens which we already plan on)?

mt tabor park is a defunct volcano

drive up the columbia gorge to Mt hood

take use od the free public transportation zone downtown. it's great

we are seriously considering Portland when my husband retires.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is very, very good. The End of the Trail Museum is also very good. Drive along the Columbia and visit the falls. Don't just visit Multnomha, get out and actually hike around the the others as well. One of the trails actually takes you behind the falls which I think your children would really enjoy. Time permitting, I would certainly drive out to Fort Clatsop

I am trying to think of something that could be started now to guarantee a nice cut flower in two months and I am coming up blank. Hydrangeas or Hybrid tea roses, perhaps? You could buy several plants on sale and nurture them until then. But even then, you can't control for exaact timing of buds, disease, and other factors. Maybe someone else on here will have suggestions. My two cents is this: If flowers for your wedding are of importance, maybe you could order some blooms online and arrange them yourself? I was in a wedding a few years back and the bride did just that and it worked out well. Or you could check out local farmer's markets and let someone else do the growing work for you. Ilene, It can be very hard to get good seed germination in hot and dry weather, and windy weather just compounds the problems. Before I put anything in a raised bed, whether it is seed being sown directly into the soil or seedlings being transplanted, I water first with a soaker hose to get the soil good and moist down to a depth of about 6". Then I plant, then I water again. Like Carol, I have found soaker hoses to be very effective at keeping young seeds/seedlings moist. In the hot weather, you do have to water twice a day and maybe water lightly 3 or 4 times a day if it is very windy to keep the soil moist enough to induce seed germination. I often use old sheets to shade my seedlings from about noon on for their first few days because a full day of sun can be hard on them. It helps, but sometimes they wilt anyway especially when it is very hot and very windy. I pre-soak and pre-sprout when I can and that helps too. If the first soaking was a deep soaking, all you have to do after that is keep the area around the seed moist so the seed will germinate. When tiny seed are in the ground, I use a soaker hose with tiny holes or a watering can or a watering wand that emits a very fine mist so I don't wash the seeds away or wash them too deeply into the soil to sprout. Some things I cover with boards or heavy cardboard to keep the soil moist too. This is especially helpful with tiny seeds like carrot seeds. If soil is hard and compacted despite being moist, I'd make a furrow, plant the seeds in the furrow and lay a thin layer of compost over the seeds instead of using garden soil. Compost doesn't crust over and get hard like some soils do so the seeds can break through the surface more easily. Because our August temps tend to be in the upper 90s to low 100s during the time I am trying to put in a fall garden, I tend to pre-soak, pre-sprout or start seeds inside in cups instead of direct sowing and that improves my germination rates. If I sow the seeds inside in paper cups, I move the flat outside the very minute most of the seeds have sprouted. I figure the sooner they get used to full sun, the better. I will try to let them spend the first couple of days in a location sheltered from wind and I move them to shade if they are starting to look wilty. Seedllings sown in cups go into the ground around 1-2 weeks of age since they grow so rapidly (if well-watered) in the hot weather. The only exception is cold-season crops like broccoli, cabbage, etc. I start them inside and keep them inside until they are 4-6 weeks old, then harden them off and transplant them in Sept.'s cooler weather. I want those particular crops larger when they go into the ground so they'll take off running and grow and produce quickly. Getting seeds sprouted and transplants into the ground successfully is the hardest part of fall gardening. Once it all is in the ground and growing, the fall garden is usually a breeze with lots less disease and insect issues. Wow, its great to see feedback on some Portland providers. We have been giving our kitchen a makeover as well, it all started with me falling for a Bluestar range...which then made it apparent the rest of the kitchen needed work to make it stand up to the range. We have our original cabinets from when the house was built 80 years ago, we did have to resize a few of the wall cabinets as they hung too low and made the counter useless. They had been refaced at some point with some lightly stained maple, and after getting quotes to paint our small kitchen cabinets in the range or $1800 we painted them ourselves with Miller primer/paint. I performed all of the electrical work, we just had to have a contractor run the gas line as we originally had a wretched electric stove. We are now at the counter decision, and are leaning towards soapstone. We got one bid and it just seemed way too high for the amount of work soapstone takes (no polishing or sealing), I just don't see how it can have $1800 in labor if I compare the cost of "DIY" from Teixeira cost. We have two straight counter tops, nothing fancy. I could screw it up and do it twice for what the quote we got was. If we had to pay the bid price of $3000+ for soapstone, I couldn't justify it. We have old cabinets, so they are a shallow depth...which means the counter is not "standard" and would have to be completely replaced if we ever replaced the cabinets. However the DIY price is a bit easier to consider. We also got our Bluestar at BASCO, but just the 30". They had a great deal going last year that saved $300 off the standard price. One complaint is that their delivery guys dented the side panel, pretty big mistake for guys that deliver high cost (heavy) appliances every day. This reminds me I need to call and finish getting credit for the damage as they offered. We found some soapstone slabs at Casa Bella and a few other spots around town, i think we found 3 warehouses with SS slabs in stock...I just hate how they can't tell you the price of it. It really seems like they have a racket going with the installers and can just make up whatever price they want. None of them would even tell us a "real" price, seems shady to me. Perhaps that is how stone is sold, but I'm not down with that game...just seems to leave too much room to just jack up the price if they don't like your fabricator or something.

You didn't mention what type of activities you like, or if you are willing to travel outside of the downtown area. Here's a few ideas I thought you might be interested in.

OMSI is great (oregon museum of science and industry). You can also catch a laser light show or omnimax movie.

Zoo-They use to have evening music in the summer. They might still have it. It is near the rose garden. They also have tennis courts at the rose garden if you like that.

Pearl District Downtown if kind of fun if you like outdoor cafes, shopping and such. If that isn't your think I wouldn't bother.

Jakes Seafood is great for seafood if you like that. There are two and I always forget which is which, but we prefer the one that is NOT attatched to the hotel.

McMennamins Kennedy School is another neat place. It is an old school that has been renovated. They have movies certain hours that kids can go to (some hours they aren't allowed). You can eat in a restraunt or order pizza and such to take into the movie. You sit in an old auditorium in sofas and chairs watching the movie. You will also find great spririted drinks from the bars. McMennamin brothers have renovated several places around including the old poor farm in Gresham. Kennedy school is my favorite one, Edgefield is my hubbies.

Trip on the Sternwheeler up the river. I think you can catch it downtown.

Jet boat trip to Oregon City Falls.

Oregon City has Historical things including homes you can visit, and the OR Trail Interp Center.

Oaks Amusement Park- A small amusement park and large skating rink. The floor is also made of wood and survived a flood way back. The rink is huge. It also has a nice picnic area for families too.

If you want a resonably priced Italian meal. Try the Old Spaghetti Factory near John's Landing and downtown. It is right on the river and is very pretty. Dress is casual and reservations aren't taken. It can be very crowded at peak times. I don't even think they are open for lunch, but not sure.

Columbia River Gorge- great day trip. Be sure to take the scenic route there through Corbett. You will miss some beautiful spots if you don't. You can come back the hwy if you choose to and make a loop since the hwy is faster. Other interests besides scenery and Multnomah Falls might be Bonneville Dam, windsurfing in Hood River if the wind is blowing. If you happen to be in the gorge on a Sunday morning I highly recommend the Skamania Lodge Brunch. They have everything you could possibly imagine for food and it's good. The decor is comfortable, lodgy, family friendly and you can sit outside and enjoy a great view as well. You cross the Bridge of the Gods and go to Stevenson Washington (not far across the bridge). They serve other meals too, but I can't vouch for them.

Hiking and scenery near Salem at Silver Falls State Park.

Timberline Lodge. You could get there from the gorge crossing over at Hood River. The drive is beautiful, but it would be a long day. If you were inclined to stay somewhere between Timberline and Portland if doing a long day trip you might give the Resort on the Mountain a try. There is a very nice golf course if you like golf. There is another place you can rent cotages or trailers but I can't recall the name. I think it is MT Hood RV village. They have an indoor pool for the kids.

Beach-Seaside is probably the kids favorite because there are lots of things to do there. It is a very active place. Couple hours or less from Portland.

A visit to Mt St Helens.

Ride bikes, skateboard, rollerskate on the springwater trail. Much of it is along the river.

Visit Kah Nee Ta Resort- about two hours from Portland over Mt Hood. It is hot and crowded so if that isn't your thing avoid it. There is a large hot spring pool below with a resort and casino above on the hill. They also have golf and horse riding. It is on the Warm Spring Indian Reservation.

Bend has an awesome museum, lava lands and lots of other things, but it is someplace you could stay for a few days and is about 4 hours away. One could even do a day trip to Crater Lake from the area. Sunriver Resort is our favorite for lots of bike trails and big pools.

I'm out of ideas, but hope this might help you or others. Have a great trip!

I can't go to Portland with out going to Powells book store. I also recommend the Skamania Lodge. A friend and I had an awesome seafood buffet there. I found the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Garden beutiful and moving. And the botantical gardens were wonderful.
