going thru new york state

we are planning the annual vacation trip. leaving the cleveland ohio are and driving to cape cod. quick and easy is rt 80 thru PA to wilkes-barre, pa for the night then
a loop north of new york city and thru conn, RI and southern
MA to the cape. then we aren't exhausted from the drive.

but this year the decision makers in the back seat have decreed that cleveland to buffalo to albany and then the mass pike will be much more interesting. which is like an extra 8 hours of driving-- but hey, we live to make our kids happy.

so we plan on leaving home in the afternoon on friday and making it to somewhere around buffalo-- thats a nice 5 hour drive. dinner and bed. the on Saturday we'd like to do something along the way (mainly to break the monotony of the turnpike). we could get up drive 1-2 hrs, do our thing, drive a bit more, spend the night and do the last bit on sunday. (we usually figure 6 hours from the Mass State line on the turnpike to the cape)

we have reservations for Sunday on the cape (can't check in until 3PM). so we'll have plenty of time to stop.

who has suggestions for a interesting 6-10 hours on a Saturday in New York State in August?

thanks diggerb

RE: going thru new york state

Here's a few ideas: Niagara Falls- the Maid of the Mist is an incredible boat ride. Letchworth State Park is beautiful as is Watkins Glen. If you have children, the Museum of Play is suppose to be fantastic in Rochester. In the town of Penfield, there is a wonderful crepe restaurant right near the Erie Canal that serves every kind of crepe. The Andirondacks are amazing and definitely worth a hike. Western NY is beautiful. I grew up on a canal town and still miss it. And a minor point, in NY the turnpike is called the thruway. Oh, and it is probably not near your travels but the 1000 islands.....

thanks for the suggestions. what we got planned is to:

on friday PM drive to Jamestown area and then Saturday AM
we'll check out the Lucy-Desi Museum. Wife and kids will like that. then we'll zip along the backroads to exciting
Le Roy and do the Jell-O museum.Dad and the kids will like that. Then we'll get back onto the thruway and see how far we get towards Cape Cod. By Sunday afternoon we should be
munching of lobster rolls and fried clams!!!
