washington dc vacation

i'm planning a washington dc vacation, i'm planning on driving and staying outside of the city and taking the metro into the mall. i'm planning on seeing pretty much all the major sites, memorials.

i was wondering if there are any particulars i should know, like for instance i've heard the capitol tour tickets are sold in the mornings, usually sold out, so i know to plan to get tickets the morning of.

anything else along these lines to keep in mind. i'm trying to minimize the walking by seeing things in one area on a day.

also, i'm thinking about making a 'day trip' up to see a few tourist things in NY, just only interested in seeing statue of liberty and the empire state building... suggestions on that. again the ny trip is secondary to dc, just like to know some inside info/problems from people that've taken similar family vacations.

Have visited DC several times, the last trip we stayed a week. The Holocaust museum and the 5 Smithsonian museums will take 2 days. Then the Botanical Gardens, Capitol tour, the monuments - plan at least 2 days for those places.

Schedule your tour of the Capitol through the Congressman of your particular district. If you wait until the morning of, you may not get a tour. Also, all congresspersons have summer interns who will take you all the way through the tour and that makes it much more interesting. We did the scheduling 30 days in advance by calling the congressional office and it was no problem to get the tour.

The metro is the way to go in DC. You can buy passes easily and the trains run on time even during the rush hour.

Don't miss a lunch or dinner at Nora's in Georgetown.

We did a tour with the Grey Lines or some bus tour company which was great. You buy the tickets right at Union Station and it is well worth the money. You can get on and off all day long and see everything there is to see.

Don't do cabs. Unlike New York and other large cities, the DC cabs rate by where you are going rather than the time traveled. It was outrageously expensive with the set rates for each area of the city.

NYC is a great city to visit. You will need at least 4 days to cover all of the sights if you are going to visit the different areas like Soho, etc. I haven't done the subway in NY but it is probably just as easy as DC but the natives are usually not as helpful as in other cities. When I visit NYC, I walk as much as possible and only cab it for long distances or when my feet or child have had enough walking.

we really enjoyed our trip to dc.
using the metro is easy, just take a few lessons from the metro people.
we really enjoyed the Spy Museum, its near fords theater.
it was well worth the ticket price. We booked the spy museum and the holicaust museum on line. to be sure we got in.
our first day we paid for the bus tour where you can get on and off at the different stops. we paid for a 2 day ticket
and thought that was a good deal, rather than trying to metro all the places it took us. We rode the first day from the start to the end of the tour. made notes of where we wanted to stop. the second day we made all the stops we had planned.
people at the hotel told us that the bureau of engraving was really worth the tour-- but you have to stand in line for ticket first thing in the AM. we were unwilling to wake up to do that, or for any other site-- just took our chances. the native american museum was outstanding. it was a highlight of our trip.
we stayed in largo on the east side of DC. we had a really great 'soul food' meal at Carolina's kitchen in largo
town center shopping mall-- its next to the michael jordan movie theater.
check to see if your hotel has a shuttle service to the nearest metro station. that's cheaper & easier than parking there or not finding parking. follow traffic rules!!! we got ticketed and towed. carry identification and driver's lisc. at all times.

In addition to local nurseries you could check out this great business called Edible Landscaping, which specializes in fruit trees. They're located in VA so most of what they carry will do well in our area. http://www.eat-it.com Juneberries/Serviceberries (amalanchier) are one of my favorite native fruits, and will do fine in some shade since they often grow in the forest. They have small red-purple berries with an edible seed inside. My husband says they taste like blueberries and I think they taste like Sweet Tarts (maybe I don't let them get all the way ripe!). The birds will love whatever you don't eat. I'll eat a pawpaw or two in the wild but the kerosene like aftertaste stops me after that, so I wouldn't plant them in my yard. Some people don't seem to be bothered by them though. Gooseberries and currants can also apparently take shade, especially afternoon shade (which side of your yard is the forest on?). Otherwise most fruit trees will do better in full sun. Figs THRIVE in my neighborhood in Takoma Park/Silver Spring. (There are so many trees within a few blocks of us, I have the theory that they're all cuttings off of one or two trees that have been passed around over the years.) I think the ones I like the best are Celeste, if I've identified them right. Animals seem to leave them alone, which is a major plus. You can dry whatever you don't eat fresh. If you've never had a fresh fig, there's nothing quite like it. I'm a huge fan. In general most folks I know seem to think apples and peaches are too high-maintenance to be worth it. I have a peach tree in my backyard that produces massive amounts of fruits but the squirrels like to eat them when they're green, so I get very few. It's kind of heartbreaking -- every year I see the number of fruits and my hopes are so high for good, fresh peaches, and it never quite comes out that way. We also have a pear tree that is not nearly as productive, but just as attractive to the squirrels. I have yet to eat a pear. I have a neighbor who grows plums somewhat successfully but loses a lot to the plum curculio bug. Mulberries grow pretty much as a weed tree in this area because birds eat so many of them and spread the seeds. I find them very tasty. You can easily feed yourself and the birds. You'd just have to stay on top of any seedlings that start coming up where you don't want them (especially along fences where birds perch). This year I have plans to plant a sour cherry. Birds are supposed to like them less than sweet cherries. We'll see. I'm also looking into Japanese persimmon. Blueberries also can do well here if you amend the soil to be acidic enough for them. You will have to fight the birds for them, too. Good luck!

Tall sabal palms in Washington DC

I know this is probably a dead thread now, but google street view for the building was done on May of 2011 - the sabal on the left was fully dead, the one on the right actually had 2 small new green leaves growing. That said the last 2 (and especially this winter of 2014) have been horridly cold, coldest since 1994, and surely any unprotected palm of most any species (except a well placed and established windmill or dwarf) is at best damaged and sabals are probably dead by now :(.

Ooooh! More great advice! I LOVE the idea of Easter Brunch at the Kennedy Center! It is special enough for the occasion and unique to DC. Plus, I checked it out on Chowhound (thanks for the link!) and the reviews are very favorable. Oh, I'm getting excited now! I've also arranged for a Capitol tour with my Senator's office and requested a tour at the Bureau of Printing & Engraving. I passed on the White House tour because it seemed like a lot of security hassle for a short tour. Did I make a mistake - is it really not to be missed? Emma, you are not alone in your enthusiasm for Air & Space - I will go with an open mind! I booked our hotel at the Embassy Suites near Dupont Circle, but I'm not totally sold on that idea. It is a 5 block walk to the Metro which sounds kind of far to me. I'm wondering if I should change to the ES at either Chevy Chase (Friendship Heights) or Alexandria. Both have Metro stations very close by, and it sounds like lots of restaurants as well. Alexandria sounds very charming, I'm leaning towards that way. Will we miss anything if we stay too far out? (Are those places too far out?) I need good restaurants and shopping, don't need nightlife. We'll be there for a week. (I did check out the ES at the Convention Center but it is coming in at over $350/night including tax. I just can't bring myself to go that high!) Thanks again for the great ideas - keep 'em coming! I went before 911 and the Metro is the way to go if you can figure it out.We did not and got off at the Arlington cemetary and walked most of the way.We walked across the River bridge all the way to the mall.Washington monument looked close but it was a heck of a walk.The Houlacaust museum was OK but the Smithsonian museums were to busy people just stop and no one moves while they read and gauck at every little thing.We seen what we wanted to see in 2 days most of that time just walking.
