Looking for a cheap vacation...any ideas?

We have a buy one get one free deal on United airlines and are looking to go on a vacation at the end of June. We live in Portland, Oregon. We love to antique, go to historical places, etc. I like gardening, my husband loves sports. We are not outdoorsy people.

Any ideas of fun places we might visit? It would be my husband and I. We are willing to rent a car. We were thinking Boston or somewhere on the east coast.

Boston is an ideal walking city, with ample public transportation in and out of the city. Many hotels are expensive, but you can find a good hotel for around $120. Sometimes less.

I noticed that you have a son. Boston has many things for kids, including the Children's Museum, the New England Aquarium, and the Science Museum. Boston Common has a nice playground and the Frog Pond, where kids can wade. The Public Garden has the swan boats, which you can ride.

Outside of Boston, there is Salem, which is focused on the witch trials but is also a longtime maritime city. It is reachable by commuter train from Boston's North Station. Using the same train, you can also go to Gloucester - the famous fishing town - and Rockport, with lots of shops on a wide pier jutting out into the harbor.

South of Boston is Plymouth and Cape Cod. It's only 90 minutes to the start of the Cape, or you can take a ferry ride from Boston to Provincetown. West of Boston are the revolutionary war battlefields of Lexington and Concord, along with Walden Pond, made famous by Thoreau.

I did a quick search on a few places that are in Boston with reasonable prices. I know these hotels are in decent areas, but otherwise know nothing about them.

A beach house is great on Fire Island Long Island we get one every year and pay 1600.00 for monday thru Friday the house is 3 houses off the ocean and is big we stay at Ocean Beach town

Something bad happened that actually was a very, very good thing... After following breiaj's instructions to the letter, two of the floor tiles in the bathroom popped up a couple of days later and wouldn't stay stuck. When I pulled them up the rest of the way, I found a leak! If it hadn't been for those tiles unsticking, we wouldn't have found that leak until it did a LOT more damage - like made a big ole mess of the kitchen ceiling. So here's one way in which vinyl tile might actually be BETTER than sheet! A few notes WRT breiaj's instructions... I admit to dropping back to $3.99 paintbrushes because they became unworkable so quickly - the glue would start to dry up in the bristles while we were working and it would become more like a paddle than a brush! We didn't have any problems with bristle loss. 2" flat-ended paintbrushes were just the right size, a wider brush seemed like it would save time but was really more awkward to work with, especially with cut pieces. Don't bother wearing rubber gloves in hopes of keeping your hands clean, they stick to the tile's adhesive and to the adhesive you're spreading on and just generally irritate the crap out of you. :-) The adhesive - Armstrong's anyway - is kind of hard on your hands though, and contrary to the label does not wash off with soap and water! We ended up using a "painter's wipes" product we had on hand to clean up our hands about every hour because we would get too sticky to work effectively, and our fingertips were pretty raw and sore afterward. Even though it costs a bit more it's a lot easier to work with the smaller containers of adhesive using this brush-on method, because the bucket gunks up something awful. If you're laying more than about 100 square feet, seriously consider coughing up for the vinyl tile cutter (homedepot.com has one for about $50, or you can rent a superduper heavy-duty one for about the same for a weekend)... scoring and snapping with a utility knife sucks after a while, it's slow and hard on your hands. Make sure you have a comfortable utility knife no matter what though, and a LOT of blades. Stanley makes a really nice knife in their FatMax line, with a rubber-cushioned handle. A jamb or undercut saw ($15) makes dealing with those door jambs SO much easier than trying to cut the tile around them! We removed the baseboards; we were going to replace them with vinyl cove but the damn stuff just would not cooperate so we patched the baseboards with wood filler galore and put them back, and it looked SO much neater than butting the tiles up to the baseboards. deeje, I've checked around with several manufacturers of vinyl tile and the biggest deal WRT moisture is not to slop around too much water when you mop - contrary to popular belief, you don't need a gallon bucket full of near-boiling water and some vile chemical to get a floor clean! Try a well-squeezed-out sponge or terrycloth/microfiber mop instead of a sopping string or rag mop instead. Those microfiber cleaning cloths fit on Swiffer handles really well, if like me you are too cheap to buy the Swiffer cloths. :-) ctaylors6, the instructions in the Cryntel box agree with the Lowes guy - wash well-secured vinyl very well, rinse well, allow to dry thoroughly. I'd use something like TSP that would destroy any gloss on the existing floor. Our vinyl was trashed so we couldn't leave it, so I can't speak to the adhesive method on top of vinyl. We still haven't gotten the kitchen floor laid down yet. We had to tear out some of the subfloor and replace it, and then do a lot of leveling and sanding on the rest, got diverted with a day of electrical work, and to top it all off DH has been sick as a dog. :-( Cross your fingers for this weekend!

ideas for cheap! 12' countertop?

If you call around to a local countertop place, they might be able to sell you a 12' sheet of formica laminate that you could glue to 12' board (or you could join two pcs together, and use a thinset or something similar on the joint - just make sure it's smooth). If this is only temporary and you/your dh are handy, this could be a real inexpensive fix! The edge will be a bit trickier, but still do-able. We did this for our last kitchen reno (which had an l-shape w/ an angled corner and we didn't want a seam. we couldn't find a pre-made counter wide enough for us). For the edge, we put a pc of cherry to match the cabinets and beveled it. It went on before the formica and was routed after the formica was glued. If you want an all formica look, you can put the edge pc on over-sized and then route the top and bottom, then apply the top piece and route it flush (have never done this method myself). Bear in mind it won't be doable to get a rounded edge by doing this yourself - it will be a hard 90, or a bevel. It will still look great though! I use jute twine I thought I paid under $3 but here it is at https://www.walmart.com/ip/TWINE-JUTE-HD-NAT-190FT/19870337 Amazon, HD, and garden centers will also have it. I described it here but the link is below. <gumby_ct(CT it says Z5) I have been using the string method for quite a few yrs now, I wouldn't do it any other way now. I use jute twine - it ALWAYS lasted the entire season and can be composted. I used nylon and other synthetic products the 1st yr. - until I found out how time consuming it was to remove the string or wire twisted around a plant stem to save for next yr. Esp. if you till the garden soil. I can't imagine trying to have the roots grow into the string. What I do is wait until the plant has a couple branches then wrap the jute one complete wrap the main stem under a branch, doesn't matter where the stem/branch is located, really. The higher up the plant the less string you will need. The roots will hold it in the ground. So 1 complete wrap around the main stem then tie a loose knot - I can't esplain how to tie knots so pick whatever YOU know how to tie, it doesn't matter, really. It is the action of twisting the string around the plant as it grows that will hold it. So after you've tied the knot then twisted the string around the plant and between the next branch on the way up. I use a clockwise direction - do what you see fit just keep going in the same direction. So after you've got the knot and a couple twists around the plant - take the jute all the way up to the crossbeam, wrap then tie it with the knot of your choice. There that wasn't hard now was it? I was surprised to find that this string method held the tomato, cukes, watermelon, or whatever plant you want to trellis UP better than the cages and stakes I used esp. and during a hurricane while the plant is loaded with fruit. I was impressed. NOW, when you are out there watering, weeding, or just walking by and see a plant has grown, give it a twist or two around the string and the string will hold it up. Now there might be times esp. w/cukes or if you don't pinch off the suckers, you will need to run another string or two. I just pinch sucker with thumb & forefinger when I am out there. Cukes are esp. nice cuz once they get up off the ground they will grow nice n straight and are much easier to harvest. The hardest ones to find are the ones on the ground before the plant goes UP. IF you used just jute twine and no other plastic pieces or parts - you can just remove the plant and throw the whole thing into the compost or trash, if you want. Jhmarie, so funny/ironic you posted the pic with the dark gray walls, because I just remembered a friend who purchased a home with oak cabinets and painted her walls Benjamin moore Storm AF-700 and it actually looked amazing! She had light gray tile flooring and black appliances as well. And she brightened it up with lots of white and bright accent pieces. So the white beadboard wallpaper is a genius (and inexpensive) recommendation. I actually love it so much I'm going to save that idea for my house. Hillaryndillon, it's completely understandable to feel that way! You want to LOVE your house and when you see all these awesome ideas on HGTV it's easy to get discouraged. You have a very nice kitchen. My advice is to move in, clean, unpack. Live in it a couple months before making any decisions. See what works/doesn't work. For example gray walls might seem nice but depending on the direction the room faces and the lighting, a gray could be too dark/drab for the space. You won't know until you're there for a little while. It took about 6 months of living in our home to really decide which rooms we want to repaint. Seeing the rooms at different times of day/different lighting can make a huge difference. Also you may find some oil rubbed bronze light fixtures on sale or clearance.. and that could jumpstart an entirely new design direction (you may want to do ORB cabinet hardware if lighting is ORB)... so see what I mean? Don't rush it. :) I made that mistake before and it stinks when you just want to CHANGE a space so badly that you get excited and do it without really getting to know the space and also researching design ideas. One thing I wish I'd known about sooner is "whole house paint scheme"... google it or search on Pinterest. Really great ideas on how to use color (paint) in each room of your home so it coordinates and looks thoughtfully planned out. I had never heard of it until I used this forum. Lots of ideas on here. New York City can't be beat. Whatever negative things you may have heard in years gone by don't apply in my opinion. I've reacquainted myself with it because my daughter left the Seattle area to attend NYU. It's truly amazing and welcoming.

My second choice would be New Orleans. Between the food, the culture, and the architecture, it's the closest you can get to foreign travel while still staying in the U.S.!

Charleston has revolutionary war and civil war history. It's a beautiful southern city, has great indigenous food and the historic district is walkable.

Consider Williamsburg too. great city but maybe packed in summer.

I also agree that NYC cant be beat. rooms are less expensive in august as the natives leave for the beach, public transportaion is sublime and you go back as early as american history gets.

I just returned from a trip to Philadelphia with my children and it was fabulous. I can't wait to return with my DH. We spent 5 days there and it wasn't nearly enough time. The historical sites were great, the food is incredible, the city is gorgeous and it is packed full of artwork (murals, sculptures, etc.) and music. Most of it is free or costs very little. We did the guided bus tour (unlimited 24 hour pass that you can hop on and off at various stops as much as you want) and loved it. We did the bus tour several times in that 24 hours because each tour guide told us something different about the town. We were expecting to enjoy the typical historical sites (the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House, etc.), but also found several other interesting sites to tour like the Eastern State Penitentiary (built in 1820's and used until 1970's), Mutter Museum, and a tour of China Town complete with a tour of a fortune cookie factory. The Reading Terminal Market was a delicious place to go, as was many other restaurants we tried. If your DH is a sports nut, he'll love a baseball game there this summer. Their doing pretty good right. And, then there's always those awesome cheesesteaks.

well I would suggest a few things for a cheap vacation idea. but my cheapest idea would be a nice family camping vacation. its fun, relaxing, and very inexpensive. camp grounds usually charge an average of 15 dollars a night.
