Camping in California

Does anyone have any recommendations for places to go camping that are within a 3 hour drive of Orange County? Sequoia NP is about 5 hours away (so a little too far away), and I'm not that familiar with what else is around. Los Angeles NP seems like it might be too crowded. I'd prefer mountain/woods camping, if possible.

Get out a map of CA and check the CA state parks website.

Be sure to call park rangers to get current information about facilities and so on.

This past weekend I camped at Vail Lake resort, which is out by Temecula. It was nice (toilets, showers, close enough to town if you forgot something). Also, the Temecula wineries are close. It is a little more "desert-y" than mountains and forests, but it was really nice.

Here is a link that might be useful: Vail Lake

If you are still looking, call the state parks. One really great one near San Juan Capastrona.
