Going to Old Port District in Portland, Maine

Posted by gardenguru (My Page) on

We want to take a few days and go up to Old Port and stay in a hotel right there so we can walk to all the shops. We also want it close to Demillo's Restaurant so we can go have some wonderful seafood.

Does anyone know of a nice hotel right there within close walking distance? I have been looking at some such as Holiday Inn, Regency, and a few others but don't know anything about any of them or how close they actually are.

Any help is appreciated.

RE: Going to Old Port District in Portland, Maine

Hi Gardenguru

I think the Regency is a great choice. It is a very easy couple of blocks to Commercial St and the "Old Port". I'm not sure when you are going, but the Old Port Festival is the first weekend in June and it is a great street fair.

One thing I would recommend - explore the little restaurants in the area. DiMillo's is okay (they have been around for 50 years or so) but it is strictly tourist business.... if you want really great seafood (or any kind of food), hunt out where the locals dine. Dock Fore is really good as is the Portland Lobster Co. If you are looking for a fun place to stop for a sandwich or burger and a beer - definitely head for $3 Deweys. What a great place.

I'm sure you're going to have a great time in Portland, please post and tell us about it when you get back.
