hesitations about planning a trip

It seems like everyone I know that usually vacations in the spring, has put their plans on the back burner, sort of a "wait and see" mode. The war would disrupt the airways somewhat, I just can't imagine to what extent. I live in Canada so I am thinking of staying within the country.

I too, had reservations about planning my trip to Vegas next month. But..I'm taking my chances & even spent the $30 extra in case I must cancel-I get my $$ back for the trip-all but the $30. Sure hope this applies to the situation-if it arises. I would not however, make overseas plans-just wouldn't, right now.

We planned our trip to CA, and it turned out that our flight going out was the day we went to war. We were pleased with security on all legs of the flight. Although with DH's foot surgery, all the pins and plates make for a lengthy security check LOL

Disney in CA, in my opinion, wasn't as secure as Disney in FL has been since 9/11. They did searches but not as thorough. I also didn't see a large presence of security. At California Adventures, however, there were security folks everywhere you looked.

My hesitancy to fly now is more clouded by the SARS scare than war.

check out Blake Island's Tillicum Village...google search images, too... that's a wonderful place to spend an entire day. you go over by boat and have an authentic Pacific Northwest Indian dinner, with tribal entertainment. they cook the salmon on planks, upright, around a fire.. it's awesome! you can walk around the island, to see the natural plants and along the shoreline. I think that's a 'must,'for someone so far away from Puget Sound. there's lots and lots of Indian history around here. and as mentioned...Goodwill in Tacoma is a favorite place to find a lot of fun things. they have it all set in huge bins..you get to paw through it.. it's a large warehouse and is right downtown Tacoma, to be able to visit other great places, like Chihuly's glass house and there's a place that used to be a train station, converted into individual specialty shops..art, food...too much to see in a day.... (I was born in Tacoma)....gotta love the place! July will also be the highlight of the season for garage sales... Becky .(*_*).

cool are you dragging a uhaul ... lol ... gees has a 10 acre arborteum, across the street and down the path.. they will drive you over if you ask ...plan at least and hour or two in the arb ... dont forget the camera ... i would suggest.. minimum.. 6 hours there ... though they have the big stuff for sale .. they have 6 or 8 houses of one gallon pots.. but you better know what to look for ... second year grafts all look alike .. lol ... if you have a wish list and budget.. calling ahead might help .... frankly.. 4 hrs to jackson.. 8 hours at gees.. spend the night.. next day.. the other place ... then home to chicago ... i just dont know why you would drive all the way to gee's for a 'quick' visit ... my best suggestion.. call cary gee in advance.. tell her you plan.. introduce yourself when you get there.. and you will be given the family treatment ... show you around.. and then leave you alone ... with the size of the place.. it can be a big help ... they have a farm market.. so food is available ... but for overnight.. you will have to go back down to jackson [10 miles], because they do define 'middle of nowhere' ... lol ... never heard of the other .... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

I am not sure yet either, but appreciate all the advice! I wanted to go during my kids' April vacation, but there is a very slight chance my DD will be competing in a regional gymnastics meet that happens that week, so I don't think we can plan anything until about a month before. DH still isn't terribly excited at the idea of Charleston for some reason so maybe I'll just go for part of the week with 1 or 2 kids. Who knows. There's also the fact that we're going away for a week in Feb., a week in June, a 4-day weekend in June, and 3 weeks in July/Aug., so DH will be running a bit low on vacation days at work!

You could go the norther route in June and come back a southern route in the fall. Weather might be better. You might consider, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minn, ND, Mont Wyn-Utah-up to Wash then down the coast thru Ore, Calif, avoiding the big cities, then swing north, thru AZ, NM etc. Their is a lot of area to cover. Stop at the welcome centers, pick up some magazines, send for the free stuff from different states, get a USA map from Auto Club, plot out a general trip, don't be afraid to change it. Trip niks are great but do limit you to what Auto Club thinks you should see. Take maps and Auto Club books with you and you can always visit the Auto Club offices thru out the states. Post on the Kitchen table and those talented people will tell you their favorite places. Motels will run you around 70-100.00 a day + food. Try to use bottle water, and take medicines with you== I have a small suitcase for medicine. Take quarters for you to wash. Don't try to cover too much and try to stop every 3-5 days for a catch up. There is so much to see. Talk easy to wash items, I allow about 14 days of underwere etc. Take a cell phone, and keep in touch with relatives. I call one of my three kids at least 3-4 times a week. You said you plan to leave in June, so start collecting information now and maybe a notebook with ideas, and pictures etc. They have things that will hold clippings etc. Take stamps, pens/pencils/scotch tape, otherwards a minatature office. You cannot believe the stuff I have learned to carry. If you wish, email me direct and I will be glad to give you a list of what I take. Good luck Marie

I was thinking more about SARS than the war. A sick person breathing out seems a more hidden threat than someone waving a bomb around on a plane... they can check for bombs...

I'm driving on my vacation this year (5 hours so no biggie)!

Speaking of this subject...this was in Clark Howard's Travel Newsletter today. It is interesting! But someone please tell me what "rearranging the seat covers" does???

Housekeeping on the airlines:

Just how clean are airplanes? Current cleaning methods are said to be sufficient to rid an aircraft of any mystery virus or bacteria - even if an infected passenger is found on board.
Based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, antiseptics currently used on the planes are sufficient to kill the SARS bacteria. The health agency said cleaning crews could follow normal procedures under ordinary circumstances, simply wearing gloves and washing their
hands after performing their jobs.

Several American airlines say they do not plan any special procedures to rid planes of SARS beyond the regular cleanings that planes undergo.

The U.S. government requires aircraft to meet reasonable levels of physical and air cleanliness, but it does not set standards for how often planes must undergo thorough cleaning, leaving both the methods and the cleaning agents up to the airlines. Clean-up varies from airline to airline. Most pick up trash, wipe up lavatories and
rearrange seat covers and seat belts during the day.

Basic cleaning is mostly done at night. Most carriers clean and vacuum carpeting and wash doors, windows, wipe off tray tables and arm rests, clean and disinfect restrooms, wipe out overhead bins and arrange seat
belts for the next day's passengers. Every 15 days the airlines thoroughly clean carpets and upholstery and disinfect lavatories.

I took Aloha airlines from Orange County Airport to Phoenix - last year. I saw two cockroaches climbing near me. I'll never fly that airlines again.
