Most Romantic Carribean Island with good food!

My husband and I go to a different island every summer for our anniversary. We didn't go last year because we had newborn twins! Well, this year, we're going! And we're not bringing our kids. I feel like after having the twins, we really REALLY need a little romance. This has been a tough year, and I'm in DIRE need of a relaxing vacation. All I want is to spend some alone time with my husband and eat really good food. Where would you suggest we go? I would like to go somewhere in the carribean as this is easiest for us to get to. We've been to Aruba, St. Lucia, Barbados, Bermuda and Hawaii.

St. Martin/Maarten -- the French side. The food in the village of Grand Case is awesome and upscale. Margot is the main village on the French side. Philipsburg is the main village on the Dutch side. It's an easy island to drive around, too. Pretty island. Nice people. Good water sports available. Boating (sailboat or catamaran) on a snorkeling trip over to Anguilla for a day, including lunch at a beach place, is fun, too.

I've been to the Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St. Croix, St. John, Jamaica, Antigua. Of all, I prefer the cuisine on St. Martin.

ah... just head straight to Anguilla.... a wonderful island... a tad bit hard to get to... but you can ferry from St Maarten...

Wonderful food, quiet secluded resorts, wonderful beaches...

Thanks all! Enjoying all the talk of celebrating gophers (ha, ha). I will have to check out some of these suggestions. I bought some beautiful bearded irises at the Celebration of Old Roses and I am hesitant to put them in the ground due to the gophers and the deer. Doing my research. I am also newly interested in Clematis as companions to roses. Do the deer/gophers go after those too? I assume the answer is yes. I think I might as well assume yes and use the wire baskets...I just hate having to do that every time. Jeri - so they don't go after the lavender? Interesting as they haven't gone after mine either. Herbs too ok? So it's ok to plant herbs between roses? Not a bad idea. Any specific recomendations? Thanks again for your rosy input!

I have to agree on the fondue posts. Takes a while to do, can do by soft lighting (if you're careful). Start with a luscious cheese fondue and a crisp wine, followed by a meat and veggie orgie, and follow up with sinful strawberries dipped in warm chocolate with kirsch. Then, put in the movie "Chocolat" and you're all set! Don't forget the tawny port with the chocolate course.

Thanks all for the wonderful feedback. The after dinner trip was totally spontaneous and we ended up at Ragged Point only because closer places were all booked for the weekend. By the wya, The restaurant at the RPI has special meaning for me; the former executive chef there, the one that put the place on the map, was the executive chef who hired me when I worked here at Pelican Point. changeling: we've done "burgers and fries" and she still loves me. Nancy: "What's next?" I don't know. But I have lots of recipes now, thanks to so many on this forum. carol: I didn't have a camera for the dinner, no. But I did bring a camera on the trip. Sorry, nothing that I can post, though. tricia: the bar is high but she's worth the challenge. Lars: you're right about the flavors. It was intentional. I could not convince myself that a cosy, romantic dinner could involve garlic, sour, bitter, tangy or the like. Sue: I didn't pop the question. As some of you in this forum remember, last year I was engaged. To a different woman. That didn't work. I'm taking this one slowly. vicki: the crepes recipe was something I winged. Building center island at baking height - good/bad idea?

How about keeping the lowered counter and just adding a thick butcher block cutting board for chopping as needed. Or conversely, keeping the counter low and keep the cutting board out on the counter all the time except when you need the full larger space for baking prep. If you had a dedicated end-grain butcher block for chopping on you could actually use the wood surface for cutting without having to worry about babying it. If it got marred from too many knife cuts, you could just have it refinished, something you can't do to section of a permanently installed counter top. I am short and married to v. tall guy so the thick cutting board we use allows us both to use the same base height, just adding the thick board when my DH gets in a choppy mood. I am actually planning on lowering one of our counters even more (down to about 34" for the main run) and possibly as low as 31" for the bread-kneading area. Our sink run, on the other hand, will be 1 or 2" taller than normal to avoid bending down to the base of the sink. We don't use a DW so everything's handwashed. HTH L.

I have been to Barbados, Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago.

Of all the islands, I would recommend Tobago. Less touristy I thought than the cruise ship isle (St. Lucia) with some very romantic type hotels. Great food.

I've been to Cayman Islands, Aruba, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Carraco, Cozumel, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and my favorites were Costa Rica and the Cayman Islands. But, I liked everyone of them and would go back to any in a heartbeat.

I really liked the french ambience of Martinique. It's my favorite island.

I would like to know how can i get to the french side of st. martin which i think is Margot, cruise ship docks on Dutch side .is there a ferry or bus thank you.....
