what hotel for first time trip to Vegas?

Friends have recommended Mandalay Bay or the Bellagio. We don't gamble much at all, but want good restaurants and a really nice room. We will plan to see a show or two-don't need to be at the same hotel. Any recommendations or comments on the two hotels mentioned?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn right on the strip. It was a few years ago, and the price was very good compared to the "Name" hotels. It was perfectly fine. We walked everywhere from the hotel.

The Venetian is one of my favorites. If you can afford it, try the four seasons on top of the Bellagio. The Venetian has great rooms.

DH and I just went to LV for the first time ever, and got a pretty good deal. However, that was February, and I would think by April that prices will be higher. I used Trip Advisor for ideas and booked through www.vegas.com. Interestingly, I don't ever feel the need to go back there!

Hi Faron - if your DW and DD are sensitive to scent in any way I would not recommend the Venetian. We did not stay there while in Vegas, but spent an afternoon looking around the hotel and shops. They deodorize / scent the air (probably to mask the cigarette smoke), seemingly through the ventilation systems, and IMO it reeked. When I first walked in I said 'what is that stench??' The longer we were inside the worse it became... it was overwhelming to me & ruined the experience. I remember saying to the girls I was with that I was so glad we hadn't booked our stay at the Venetian, because I would not have been able to stay there for any length of time. As it was we cut our afternoon short, and I could smell it on my hair and clothes the rest of the day. I have read since that some visitors love the fragrance, but if you have any scent sensitivity at all (and I don't normally consider myself scent-sensitive), I would avoid it. The Venetian was one of the theme-hotels I was most looking forward to visiting and I found it disappointing. It's not nearly as impressive in person as it is in pictures. And then the smell made it even worse for me. We stayed at the MGM because of the Grand Garden Arena (hubby - UFC fan) and we liked it very much. We visited & toured around most of the hotels on the Strip, and really loved the Wynn - it was beautiful. The Bellagio was lovely, and we really liked Caesar's Palace. I would love to get back to Vegas to see Cher also - I'm jealous of your DW & DD. :) Please post later on re: how they enjoyed the show. I'm trying to convince hubby to take me for my birthday.

Thanks everyone for your congrats. Yes, one of the transplant team ladies told my DH he was amazing and he truly is. He outlived the time they gave him on 5 by-passes, then when he had another massive heart attack that should have killed him and they told him there was nothing more they could do for him, he kept himself alive long enough to get a doctor to put him on the transplant list and another year and a half to get the transplant. I like to feed him healthy meals and spices can and do have a great place in them. Lakemayor, the Penzey's in Indiana is on 82nd Street, north of Indianapolis. Its got to be in the Castleton area. Jazmynsmon, I wish I had known to visit Vom Fass, The Century House gift shop and well as taking a trip to Orange Tree and Trader Joes. Haven't checked to see if there is a Trader Joes in Indiana, but if there is, I'm sure its many miles from where I live. It had been two years since the last time I got to go with DH to Madison, but I'm beginning to feel like its a place we should move to. By the way, Brennans is a must go to place whenever I'm up there, too.

Free Table/Venetian Hotel in Vegas. What style Chairs?

Well, I'm still searching. With our living situation I can't spend much and so far the simpler chairs, the classier, or should I say "classic" chairs like the one posted by Suero in the post above.....I might as well turn over my first-born son as partial payment. *where is the EEK icon when ya need one?* So I went back to my original idea.....simple wood chairs with a bit of iron decor/accent on the back. I have found several, under $150 each....I need four chairs. Of course the chairs I love on CraigsList, I emailed the owner and they won't sell the chairs individually or without the table. *sigh* But again, I'm second-guessing myself *so what else is new?*. I want the table to be the focus, not too much ornamentation on the chairs. I pulled all the packed boxes off the table and got it out of the sunroom and into the dining room. Please excuse all the dust! I unrolled the area rug that was stored with the table and the dust and furballs that flew out.....amazing what collects while something is stored in a corner, isn't it? The front bathroom is on the other side of that wall and we had a biggy flood so the baseboards and touch-up painting will have to be completed. I blurred the mirror on the wall, the mirror in the little curio cabinet and the round glass piece on the table because my reflection was in all three! One reflection of me is bad enough but three? ...again, where's that EEK icon? So, my question I'd like opinions for, before I have raw fingers from searching the web: how much ornamentation/iron/metal decor on the back of the wood chairs is too much? Here's the table.....the copper leaf around the apron of the table and the little feet of the table is showing much brighter with the flash of the camera. Here are some chairs I found that I can actually afford but not sure how much accent is too much, KWIM? Thank you for any and all opinions! This first 4-pic set is the set the seller won't break up/sell individually.

The Four Seasons is a Hotel and it is on top of the Bellagio. It is an upscale Ritz Carlton and I believe the company that owns the Four Seasons also own the Ritz. You can see Toto toilets in operation at the Venetian:-)

The Four Seasons Hotel is built into the Mandelay Bay Hotel. I don't believe that the Bellagio has anything to do with it. All three are beautiful(Venetian, Bellagio and Mandelay). The spa in the Venetian is an offshoot of the Canyon Ranch. Rooms there are all mini-suites. THe Mandelay tends to host a younger crowd. All have wonderful restaurants.

The Rio is three blocks north of the strip, and tries harder as a result. It is well run, friendly, inexpensive and a lot of fun. They comped us to a 800 sq ft corner room with a wonderful view of the strip, when we mentioned at check in that we were there for an anniversery. The food was fair to good, depending on how classy the place was that you chose to eat at. We don't gamble, so I cant tell you much about the casino.

I haven't been there in 5 years so I'm not sure about the hotels. If you don't gamble, rent a car and drive out to Red Rock Canyon. It's very beautiful.

Last time I went to Vegas, I stayed at Paris and it was very nice!

I did not like staying at Monte Carlo. Treasure Island was just average. Luxor was pretty nice, and Tropicana is decent for an inexpensive choice. But my #1 would have to be Paris!

I thought the Rio was awful -- definitely caters to the college crowd, and they certainly didn't try very hard to please us when we were there.

I enjoyed Harrahs as one of the more middle-of-the-road hotels. It's in the middle of everything, so you can walk to just about every other major hotel. The rooms are sort of bland, though.

If I had the choice (and the money) I'd go for the Venetian or Bellagio. They're both absolutely gorgeous.
