Going to New Orleans an the gulf shores in April

We are going to New Orleans an the surrounding area in April. We will probably stay in Baton Rouge because we have found all the hotels are already booked full in New Orleans metro area. I would like to go on a charter fishing trip in the Gulf while in the area. Does anyone know of some good charter companies? I would also consider going on a bass charter too. Our plans are to soak up some sun for several days an then move on to Mobile to see the Battleship and the gardens in that area prior to heading back north to wait for our spring to come. Are there any "don't miss" things to do while in on the gulf shores?

You got to be kidding about the solid bookings!!
There is almost always space in one of the big hotels at almost any time (with a few exceptions like Madri Gras).

You better do some more homework first then have FUN!

Bill, a friend from the Cooking forum (woodie) alerted me to your post here. I'm guessing you're trying to book New Orleans during JazzFest which would explain the lack of rooms. We live in BR. Dh works offshore (on oil rigs) and fishes the marshes during his free time. Let me talk to him and get back with you.

I guess Meldy you're not understanding that the French Quarter and most of the historic districts in New Orleans are not in imminent danger of being flooded - only those areas that were built below Ponchartrain in areas that were previously swamps. And it won't happen again if the decision is made to return the land to wetland swamp. The misery of the recent loss would only be compounded if deverlopers were allowed to rebuild, setting up a recipe for another disaster. One other thing I'd like to mention is the fact that the current and former mayors of New Orleans had the dire predictions, scientific studies and calls for action on their desk for YEARS literally gathering dust inches thick. My friend is a reporter at the Times Picayune and they constantly harped and wrote stories and expose's. The local government had a "let the good times roll" attitude and never pressed the federal government for action. The feds don't usually hop-to unless there's a fire lit under them.

If you are driving south on 59 you will pass through Robertsdale, then summerdale, then foley...98 crosses 59 right in downtown foley. Take a left, going east toward Lillian on 98. The nursery (on hwy98 and hwy90)is at least 15 min away from that point...just keep driving, through Elberta. Aside from that nursery and Magnolia and Davis, I also highly recommend Wilsey Nursery...very nice quality plants and service..traveling south again on hwy 59, at hwy 98 in downtown foley, take a right going west toward fairhope...its about 15 min away take a right on 181/27 and its immediately on the left. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Count me in! We had one last year accross the lake. It was great. Met alot of nice people and came home with a ton of plants. Just let me know where we'll met in the park and any details. It may be good to post what we'll be bringing and work out some swaps in advance. I'll start potting up cuttings and or starting seeds. Thanks for the idea. Brenda Harvey, LA

Moving to New Orleans...

What you can grow in New Orleans but can't on the north shore. Used to live below the French Quarter in Bywater. Though I'm not now on the north shore but the Mississippi Coast Just above the Bay Of St Louis. In Bywater I had a huge Bouganvilla that almost coverd my old Creole cottage. Though the occasional frost did give it trouble in winter. Every spring and summer I was blessed with all that color. I've tried to grow Bougainvilla several times here. Every winter the frost kills it. Xanthus. Welcome to the deep south. Seems around Thanksgiving or at least by Christmas you'll start seeing the 1st of the early Camillia blooming. Then the mid season and late season Camilias. Oh you have to plant your pansy's and petunia early to get rooted before the frost. They'll be gone the 1st of summer. The Camillias will be followed, by the oriental Magnolias. They by the Louisiana phlox, azelias and on the north shore and Mississippi dogwood. Then the Louisiana Irises. Amaryliss. Then you're headed into warm weather. And we have the tropicals. Then you look for an air conditioner to stand next to till fall where it begins again. What did I leave out?

Thanks Cindy. We have found plenty of rooms available in the surounding area, an will probably book the rooms as soon as we see what happens to the price of gas if and when we go after Saddam. I don't want to book the rooms and then the price of gas go to $3 or $4 a gallon. I might still go if the price of gas doubled, but if it were to go much higher than that I would have to think about spending the extra money.

Staying in Baton Rouge might be a better idea anyway. It'll be cheaper than New Orleans, and definitely less of a hassle. Plus you'd be centrally located if you're interested in visiting Acadiana, which is the Lafayette area 50 miles west of BR. IÂm sure youÂve done a lot of research, but just in case you havenÂt found this site, I think youÂll find it extremely helpful. Click on the different regions of the state map (in the upper right hand corner) to get extensive info on New Orleans, as well as Plantation Country (Baton Rouge), or Cajun Country (the Lafayette area). I talked to dh and he couldn't give me any info on charters. He and a friend co-own a small boat and fish in the marshes. Dh occasionally fishes for tuna when he's on the rig, but has never been on a chartered trip. These are two of his bookmarked sites.

Thanks again Cindy. No there is just one backyardbill, but this forum just went over to the paying member thing an I am now using my wifes sign on as she pays to use some of the other forums. Don't tell the forum owner! I am doing my research and I will have a good look at the sites that you sent along. Thanks again.

Bill, I never heard of Woodland Plantation until today when I was reading the current issue of Southern Living. It's the only plantation south of New Orleans that's open to the public. It sounds like an interesting place. The article also included info on fishing guides in the area, but unfortunately it's not available online.
