Yea Chad-that WILL be an issue but thats why it is next to the porch,so I can add on and secure it to the house(-: The 2 varieties I like are the New Zealand purple and the Ricin "Zanzibar" -the latter is the big leaved one (-; Sometimes the leaves on the Purps do look like cooper but it is difficult to capture on "film" All the other Castors are normal sized,the 4 big boys jumped out quick and with the help of a week of 80s in March they broke out of the seedling stage fast-one of the nice things about having all the protection laying around from the palms is that I was able to use some of it on the Bananas and Castors. At one point my Abyssinian grew like 1' in a few days because it was hitting the 90s in the cover- Also-the 4 biggest Castors were planted (by at least)April 6 and I think that is a month earlier than "normal".

Thanks carol! Evelyn is quite gorgeous. Austin's do want to get huge here and lots throw out those crazy long canes but I hope to cut them short after each flush next yr to see if it'll help. FWIW: I've read something about Hemlocks being a fibrous root system. Which may be what's different between that and the Pine family(?). Betula (birch) is another tree with what is considered fibrous root systems. But I'm aiming in the dark here. In my neck of the woods, everywhere (in sandy soil) where I see spruce and pine growing, there is a perimeter several feet out from the trunk, the trees have sucked the soil dry of moisture and possibly of nutrients(?), starting at the trunk out beyond the drip line, so the ground is bare in that area, except for some moss. But you know your area best and with plentiful moisture out there, you have a better chance of success. I don't think your trees will die from root pruning, but I've always been under the idea that root pruning is best done in the Fall when the tree is not actively growing.
