Grand Ganyon in Winter

I'm going to the Grand Canyon in mid-February for 3 days (sandwiched between 2 business trips). We're staying in the park. Any suggestions on what to do, see, places to eat, etc?

darn, I wish someone would answer you. We are planning a trip in April and I was hoping some of the suggestions would include that time period.

I got one message sent to my e-mail. I've pasted the text of it below in case it helps.

"My husband and I went last year and it was wonderful..
Dress warm..layers..good hiking shoes..Eat at the Park resturants..they are very reasonable..We took our time..sat by the fire..talked to people..there is a train that makes daily runs to Williams..that is fun to do, if you have time."

My aunt has done the train and enjoyed it. I don't think we're going to because we're driving up from Phoenix and staying in the canyon.

When I get back, I'll post some info about what we did and liked here.

So much bad weather everywhere. Suzy, I think Italy has been getting the tail end of your dreadful wet: our weather is like yours, but not as severe. Still it has been a VERY rainy winter (and fall before that). Our farmer neighbors had a huge slide in the field below a part of our garden, overflowing into the road below. The badly cash-strapped township has been sending out an earth-mover every day or two to clear the road. They didn't need the extra expense. I'm sorry for all this nasty weather all over. Ours was tiresome, very tiresome, and so much darkness put me in a painful mood for quite a while around the holidays. But, while it's a month and a half early (not good), spring has sprung and I must say it's beautiful. I certainly am not used to seeing roses setting buds and the Salvia guaranitica flowering this time of year. In a normal year it goes from killed to the ground to having eight foot stems, and it's quite interesting to think about what it may turn into this year when it hasn't had any dieback. Monsters aren't in it. You'll survive this year too, somehow, Suzy, and everybody else who's had a really hard winter. Good luck to you all! I hope spring, and the weather you long for, comes soon! This thread began as a means to discuss the issue of Sunset zones. The secondary motive was for me to try to explore the notion that elevation is a factor to RMG but not the only factor. Over the course of looking at climate data, I discovered that annual precipitation and the time of its occurrence may be a defining feature for the RMG region. Aridity cannot be the only determinate or wed all be over in the Southwest Gardening forum. Previous and somewhat naively, I had thought that these evergreen mountains here and there indicated that there were areas with rather high rainfall amounts - what hadn't quite sunk in was that while that is true, these areas were all at elevations where gardening becomes impossible. I began wondering if a particular native plant species was representative of the broad RMG region. I'm no expert on native plants so this was a fun exercise even if it doesn't appear to be absolutely successful (perhaps, an impossibility). It seemed to me that the Arrowleaf Balsamroot was most broadly representative. I'm hoping that other gardeners are giving this some thought and will comment. Hi Gabe, a quickie google just got the same averages. I'd bet the best data would be through the Soil Conservancy for Grand County, or the USDA AG service for the area, or something similar with the Farm / orchard extension services. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the contact addresses, but I'd bet once you got ahold of one of them, they would put you in touch with who ever you need. Good luck!!!

I know Carol.. and I can understand the curiosity. I started the research for these names 5-6 yrs ago and have now ended up with a huge collection of jasmines and then some :) I am a jasmine junkie too..lol! I have french perfume jasmines called as jasminum grandiflorum french perfume(flora plena) which is a double and jasminum grandiflorum a single from logees. Both of them are vigorous bloomers in summer and do not require chilling period for blooms. The nurseries sell them with different names but essentially they all are cultivars of jasmineum officianale. I love the single variety a little better. The blooms are bigger for this cultivar. Accents sells a single variety called as jasminum officianale or poet's jasmine which has smaller bloom. They also have double variety and call it as jasmine officianale grandiflora-french perfume. We throughly enjoyed the Grand Canyon. We spent two full days there, and pretty much covered the easy things to do on the South Rim. We didn't do anything outside the park. We stayed in Grand Canyon Village.

We walked along the rim around the village, took the shuttle to the east and the tour to Hermit's Rest (to the west). The tour guide provided some nice information, but if the shuttle had been running, I would have preferred it. It starts March 1, so it will be running when you're there. We could have driven, but heights make me nervous and I didn't want to drive it.

If you have a car, the trip to the east entrance, the Pueblo ruins and museum, and the watch tower are well worth it. It's also a lovely drive from the GC Village.

If you like to hike, I saw a trailhead for the Arizona Trail. It wasn't in my hiking book, but it looked like an interesing non-Canyon hike through woods. I had thought about braving part of the Bright Angel trail, but it was ice covered and I don't own crampons so I had a good excuse not to scare myself.

We ate at the Bright Angel Resturant and the Arizona Steakhouse. I'd give them both a B at dinner. The Bright Angel was very good at breakfast, but not so great at dinner.

By the way, if you're staying longer and want a long day trip, try to go Canyon de Chelly. I've not been there, but have been to several other Ananazi (sp?) sites, (Chaco Canyon, Bandilier, Aztec and Pecos) and they're always stunning.
