Bead Shopping in Venice

Posted by bostonpat (My Page) on

I am considering a visit to Venice this Winter/Spring and am wondering if anyone can give me any tips on buying beads while I'm there. I know that the factories on are Murano - can anyone recommend a bead addict friendly one?

Thanks!

Do check out the usenet group rec.travel.europe. Many people from Europe hang out there, and maybe you'll find a local who can give you some information.

Hmmm, searching for amazing glass beads in one of the most well-known glass cities in the world. And in Italy. Sounds pretty nice!

RE: Bead Shopping in Venice

If I remember correctly, and I am relying on my memory of 2 years ago, there is a shop that sells beads and jewelry as well in Venice. It's down on the small streets just outside of St. Mark's Square. What street, I'm not sure. I think it's near the store that sells brass replicas of the gondolo's hardware. That store is well-known because it is the only one that makes the brass hardware for the Venice Gondolas. If you can find someone to direct you there, the jewelry/bead store is in that area. Murano, you might know, is an island, so you would need to get a water taxi or tour to go there. Not sure how into beading you are, if you make your own, or whatever, but something we did was to go outside of the factory. They have pieces of the Murano glass near the shore that you can pick up. A group of us looked pretty silly doing this but it was something different, and I still have pieces - some I've used with broken tiles for table tops. The Murano glass pieces that you find this way aren't that big, but I'm sure you could drill a hole through some to use as a bead. Just a thought.

Wow... Thanks for the tips! I am very much into beadwork - I've rescued trash treasure before - why not in Italy!
Thanks again!
