New Hampshire vacation...info please

We eventually want to tour all the New England states.We would like to go to New Hampshire this summer. Good time to go? Things to do? Must see places?

Any information would be appreciated.

Summer in New Hampshire is very nice, though not as amazing as fall. Most of the ski areas are open in summer for rides to the summit for viewing or hiking. There are *lots* of hiking trails in New Hampshire.

One of my favorite things to do is to go up Mt. Washington (by car, van, or cog railroad). "The Worst Weather in the World" is right - bring a jacket!

The Kancamangus Trail, which runs east-west, is very scenic.

There's lots of outlet shopping, if you like that, in North Conway.

I'd also take a look at the Mount Washington Hotel, a beautiful old restored hotel.

Please check this link for loads of info on New Hampshire. The White Mountains are great but if you are going in summer the Lake region is very nice...we stayed at a B & B on Lake Winnesquam that was wonderful...right on the water.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I'll Google all the places you mentioned. I'm in Buffalo NY so the Ohio & Michigan places sound like a closer bet. Mocc, my whole lot is 30x135' I'm putting a new bed between the garages that is about 8' wide by the length of a 2 car garage..It will be tiered in 3 stages with probably the med. in the highest tier, and then s/m next an then smalls.Each tier will be about 5' deep and 8' wide.. Mini's will go in front of the garage 8' x 2' deep. Putting Guacamole, So Sweet and Dream Queen in first tier. Also have space next to the fence about 4'x40', and in back of the house about 24' x 5' deep.Have a lot of space next to the fence on drive side for pots. Don't know how to put pics on the forum yet, but I could send you some via email. Have visions of a great Hosta garden, but my family thinks I've lost my mind to take on such a project at almost 80 yrs. But gardening is what I live for. Sunnywood, thanks for the endorsement for NHH. Think they give a 15% discount for early orders. Last but not least COLL- You were my inspiration for my new bed when I saw your tiered section in your thread "Same Old, Same Old", Have it on my "bookmarks" Just beautiful Thanks! Well thanks everybody for your advice and encouragement. I'll be on this machine all weekend looking at things. Better go now. Forgot to feed the dog until she nudged me to tell me to "get off that d--n machine and take care of me instead.

Hi, There is also a lovely quilt shop in North Conway, very close to a nice seafood restaurant called Jonathan's. Here is her website: www.quiltshopnh.com. She recently relocated to her own building from a nearby strip mall and has a very enticing selection of fabrics. If you get to Sanford, ME. from Saco, there is a quilt shop: www.kathiesquiltshoppe.com and also a discount place called Marden's that sells end lots of fabric at unbelievable prices...about $2.99 a yard. I have found fabric there that I paid full price for at Keepsake before. Keepsake has a new sales corner. They do have lovely fabric but the last time I was in, I saw some priced at about $9.25 a yard. There is also the Barking Rose in Cornish, ME. - a bit off the beaten path from N. Conway but you might end up in that neck of the woods. She may have a website, I'm not sure. Enjoy your trip! lots2do from NH (grew up in Maine)

I can grow Kalmia/mountain laurel just north of Concord, NH with few issues in quite a lot of shade. I also grow a range of the hardier rhododendrons in part shade, but most won't bloom or grow particularly densely in full shade. If you don't have deer, arborvitae may grow if it is part shade, and we have balsam fir growing in wooded areas, though it looks nicer in more open areas. Hemlock like shade if you are in an area cold enough to not have wooly adelgids. While full-sized hemocks won't meet your size requirements, there are a variety of smaller types that might work for you. You will usually get the best help if you add your zone and general area to your profile so that it is added to your posts. To do this, go to Your Houzz in upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone. If you add info on your state and the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.

Eryn, thanks. Too funny on tongue twister!! They were a birthday gift a year or so ago. They came in a box of six, one was broken in shipping :( There is a small drainage hole, pea size. I notice that the pots are slightly rounded, so I have to be careful to not let plants grow in too long otherwise they will be difficult to get out. I grew up just south of the Mt. Washington Valley. I think summertime in that area is just the best! The lakes are simply wonderful for swimming and there are tons of cottages to rent and great campgrounds with lovely beaches and tons of activities. Be aware, though, that traffic in the Valley is simply dreadful! I would opt for one of the communities south (Tamworth, Freedom, Madison, Ossipee, Eaton) and plan my trips through Conway and North Conway accordingly.

Sandwich, Holderness, Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, and Moultonboro are very pretty, too. Again, wonderful lakes.

Autumn is spectacular. So is the traffic! You might enjoy the Fryeburg Fair, the Sandwich Fair... . Bring warm clothes and go hiking. Breathtaking.

Also: FYI, the correct spelling is Kancamagus. There is no "n" in the name! (It was always a standing joke to refuse to give directions to "the Kanc." if the person asking did know how to pronounce it properly... a little bit of Valley lore). It is a lovely drive and splashing around in the Swift River is great fun on a hot afternoon.
