My trellis ladder

I had these spindles and didn't know what to do with them and I needed a trellis for my Morning Glory's to trail up. My husband had two pieces of wood that were the same size, no cutting needed, so I made a ladder. I'm going to make another one in the spring, but it will be much nicer. This one I threw together in a pinch. Unfortunately, baby bunnies in my yard nibbled my Morning Glories away, so they didn't do much trailing this summer. Next year I'll be more prepared for them! :))

Check with the "Call before you Dig company" then drive four sticks of 1-2"diameter X 30-36" pipe in the ground, leaving enough pipe out of the ground to fit just under the bottom step on the ladder & just inside of leg of the ladder. You can tie the leg to the pipe with wire or use a "U" clamp to clamp the pipe to the ladder. You can get the "U" at hardware or big box store. You will need to take the pipe with you to fit the clamp. You will have to drill holes in the ladder leg to bolt it to the pipe.

What kind of "trellis" are we talking about? Stakes? Cattle panel? Real cages or the 3 ring type things? All the plants on your list with the exception of Health Kick would benefit from a 6 foot stake or cage. Jung's Wayahead, the determinate variety, easily gets to 4+ feet in my experience with it. And despite what your seed packet says, Early Girl, unless you bought Bush Early Girl, is a big indeterminate. ;) Big Beef Hybrid, Big Boy, the Brandywines, Caspian Pink, Pineapple, Red Brandywine, Yellow Pear, Beefsteak, and the Cherry will all top 6-7 feet. Can't find anything on one called Ultimate Opener and have never grown it but I have done all the others. But the plants don't have to be supported all the way. They just drape back over and keep growing. So the easiest thing to do would be to pick up a bundle of 6-8 foot stakes from any lumber yard and use one on each. OR invest in several 16 foot long cattle panels and some 5 foot fencing stakes to wire them to and plant along them. Otherwise, you are likely to end up with an unmanageable jungle. ;) Good luck.

There are only two patterns on the Premier yarns website using the trellis yarn. One pattern involves crocheting, and the other is neither crocheted NOR knitted. See: http://www.premieryarns.ca/product.aspx?id=6896&pid=166517 And while snooping around the Internet, I found: "Similar to Lion Brand Trellis and Bernat Matrix, City Life Ladder yarn is a glitzy ladder yarn." HTH.

You could always remove some of the vertical slats until it gets bigger, then put them back. I've never put an obelisk right over my clematis. I've always put it next to it and then trained it onto it.

That was so clever of you. Would of never thought to use spindles...I threw some away not long ago...did you screw them into the 2 pieces of wood? I've never even used a drill or power saw...but my daughter can/does. I love ladders for decor...A few years ago, I only thought of ladders as work-related...GardenWeb changed my thinking.

Thanks joannegreco and toomuchglass! I had fun doing it.

And Ashli, I didn't screw them in. I wanted to, to do it right, but I was in a hurry to get it done, so I used Liquid Nails. Believe it or not, it held up all summer. In the spring I am going to screw them in because I'm sure the Liquid Nails won't last another summer. :) And I want to make another one, maybe decorate it for inside the house or something. I've had these spindles for forever and people gave me lots of good ideas, but I just never got around to doing anything with them until now. Usually I'm not that creative in thinking. I have to "steal" everyone else's ideas off of here. :) Thank goodness for T2T!
