Recycled Fibers for Classroom Crafts?

| My students are working on a community service project to bring awareness for recycling fibers. We plan to have a store the second week of December. The store will have donated jeans and other clothing items. The students will be given an opportunity to "barter" recycled items like alumninum cans, shopping bag, plastic bottles, etc. to purchase the items in the store. I would really like to include crafty items like the pocket books made from jeans, pillows made from recycled fiber clothing, etc. I have seen the pockets be used for note holders to hand on the frig and placements made from jean pockets. Any other suggestions? |

| Does it have to just be recycled fabic or can it be other items too? I can't remember what this is called. Maybe someone else could help out and give better instructions. You take a three pound coffe can and paint it white with a snowman face. Inside you put things like gloves scarves, something painted orange for the nose, some black shapes for the eyes, mouth, buttons. Then you put a stocking cap over the outside of a can. You then have everything to make your snowman the next time it snows. Assuming the kids have access to a sewing machine, ragged quilts can be made fairly quick. Here are the basic instructions. If you make the quilt squares bigger and make a lap quilt or baby size quilt, it would be quicker. http://www.craftsofchaddsford.com/makeragquilt.htm If someone knows how to crochet, they could make a rag rug from strips of fabric. http://vintagechica.typepad.com/the_life_and_times_of_thi/2006/10/index.html I like the idea of making a hat from recycled fabric and old buttons, simple fabric flowers or something fun like a monster head. If you google hat patterns, you will find all kinds of patterns. They can be dressed up or down and be really simple. I think it'd be a fun project. |

| Great suggestions adellabedella! I have a couple of the rugs I purchased at a local gas station (crafted by someone in the community) and they are not only beautiful but have lasted for a number of years...maybe I can use those to display. I will try the lap quilt over the holidays. That would be an easy project for the students. I love the snowman project! Our project will focus on fabric like denim and other things made from cottons,etc. The point is to teach that there are sustainable options even in the things we wear! Once again, thanks! |
