Desperate for ideas.....

Hi, this is a wonderful site....anyone with ideas on where to get something CHEAP...to put real pine branches in and other seasonal decorations...to be displayed outside my apartment door...it is outside....a need a container fairly large??? But what/where...

Hmm...let's see: depending on your decor or likes and dislikes, how about a large wooden box with greenery and red berries in it, maybe a few vintage ornaments, etc. Another country idea is a galvanized tub or bucket.

More modern? a wire basket type container - either left as is or painted red or white.

If you have room, a child's old wooden sled with greenery and perhaps a red bow on it would look neat.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide on.

Exact flower colors are now probably the least of your concerns. If you want to landscape the property, Create the scale plan (using graph paper) and show all the things that are permanent features of the property ... house, drive, walk, trees, shrubs. etc. As suggested, make several copies (or alternatively use tracing paper over the top and then begin to work out planting bed areas vs. what will be lawn. For the time being, you could even forget that plants have colors as the only thing you'll be doing at this phase is working out FORM. Instead of thinking of things as plants, think of them as shapes and sizes. Place "plant-like" objects where you want them, and think of them in their mature, finished size. Consider things such as do you want a large object blocking windows? Or, would it be better to have a display of trunks and branches in front of a plain portion of wall? Do you like 100% of the roof or siding to show? When ever you wish, you could submit a copy of your progress to this thread and get feedback on your direction. There are exceptions to every rule, but I disagree that you can run off to the local garden center and expect to get DESIGN help. (Since there are exceptions, you might!) But more than likely the people waiting on you will have no training in design whatsoever. They may be gardeners and you may get suggestions for plants that people have some liking for. Collecting nice plants as such is more akin to gardening, not landscaping. Where they can be helpful is if you know the size, shape and overall character of the plant you want, they can tell you what plants can achieve those goals. It would be better to study the issues and do the design yourself, or hire a professional.

The Texas sage doesn't lose foliage in San Antonio in the winter. I've also seen them growing in colder areas and the leaves were sparser in winter, but still there. They can get pretty big, more like six feet tall. We keep ours trimmed down and there is a compacta type that stays smaller. You can prune by half in spring and they will grow back by the end of the summer. Best not to trim in early fall because they will not put out new growth and look terrible all winter. They need rain to bloom so we rarely see them bloom around here the last few years due to drought. The drought has also limited the new growth the last few years too. Since your spot is very hot, it's best to wait. We do plant even in the heat by watering a lot and shading with a box propped up on a stick, covering with sheets or whatever is available.

I've used the little knit "magic gloves" you can get at the dollar store, with crisp new bills rolled up and inserted into the fingers. The fingers are just the right length and the gloves (at least at the dollar stores around here) come in some kooky patterns and colors. I used $2 bills (so few of the "young'uns" know about $2 bills, they think it's fake money!) and it made a $20 gift look pretty nifty, but you can even get away with singles for things like office gifts or teacher gifts. For instance, if you have a strict $10 limit, deduct the $1 for the gloves and roll up a note reading "just gotta HAND it to ya, you're a great person!" or something dopey like that for one of the fingers, with $1 bills in the other 9 fingers. These are also fun to hang on Christmas trees or used to decorate another gift. (Wouldn't it be fun to find these tucked into the pockets of a new coat?) Ohhh, just thought of something... I see those prepackaged gift boxes of hat, scarf, and gloves go on sale after Christmas for next to nothing - I think it would be a hoot to take the gloves out of that, slip rolled bills into the fingers, and put them back into the gift box. Recipient opens up this rather boring gift (you could make it a joke gift by getting really, really ugly ones, or giving sets that are totally inappropriate for the recipient like pink butterflies for a teenaged boy) but it has a hidden surprise. Would take preplanning, of course, but it's a thought for the future and you could get some mileage out of it. Or those of you with bigger budgets can make the gloves part of the gift, using nice cashmere or leather gloves with whatever amount of money rolled up into the fingers, or $1 bills in all the fingers except one which has a $100 (for example) bill rolled up inside the $1, so they have to unroll all the bills to find the "jackpot". I have a "regift box" of things I have received and can't use or don't want (lots of the "WHAT on EARTH were they thinking?!" items... LOL Perfectly nice items, just totally inappropriate for me), but keep around for stuff like office gift exchange and the semi-obligatory "I don't really know you but apparently I'm supposed to give you a gift" situations. I also always give my mother a gift card to the grocery store for Christmas (although we don't celebrate it, she does, and it's a big deal for her so we go along with it). Usually I get her a new book and tape the card to a page about 3/4 of the way in but I think I might dig something really gawdawful out of the regift box, something that'll make her scrunch up her face and think "oh, UGH!", and tape the gift card to the bottom of it. :-) Also, Google "duct tape wallet" and "duct tape purse" for instructions on how to make a wallet or purse out of duct tape (there are even video instructions on YouTube, but my computer hates YouTube).

I would recommend you either "curb-shop" on the night before garbage pick-up or if that is not possible or productive just go to some thrift shops with an open mind and see what they have. Many thrift shops have lots of inexpensive baskets.

It seems when I am looking for a specific item it is nowhere to be found but when I just go "window-shopping" in TS's with nothing particular in mind I often find a treasure.

Rather than using a container you could tie the branches together with ribbon or strips of fabric cut to work as ribbon and make a bow or just let the ends hang down.

Oh, thank you so much for the ideas....and they were good, I absolutely should be able to find something from the suggestions. AND as for my tastes and decor.....Shabby Chic, romantic, country....country....oh I said country didn't
I?? :-) I am going out tomorrow looking...to hunt. Then I will let you know what I came up with. Never heard of curb-shop...what a great idea! This site is new to me, and now I can't get off of it!!!!! I am constantly checking!

Thank you for the good ideas. I am still unsure how to use the site.....catching on though....I posted a follow-up on the site that I asked the initial question saying thank you....
I'm going out tomorrow and "hunting". Very new to all of this so I need all the help I can get.....oh, I love shabby chic,country and romantic....and there are great pics on this site, and everyone seems so nice.

Every year for the last four or five I've put evergreens in my flower boxes. ALL the evergreens I use come from the curb. Seems there's always someone cutting down a pine tree for one reason or another.

As far as a container you can use almost anything....how about a pair of old boots, a a metal bucket painted a nice red, even a few of those large food can eatting places have could look cute if you rusted them out or painted them with a holiday scene.

I love using old paint cans (maybe not large enough though). Make sure the paint inside is dry or it is empty. Fill with water and freeze. You can tin punch a Christmas design on the outside with a large nail and hammer. Then let the ice thaw, and throw a bow around the top and fill with greenery. Oh, and you will want to spray paint the can after you punch the holes, so it is pretty!

I have a pair of child size-denim bib overalls. I've lined them with plastic that I poked a few drain holes into and stitched up the bottom legs. They look very cute when planted with flowers and hung on a fence post in the summer. Something like this might work for winter if you have a spot to hang something?

How about a cardboard box? Sprayed with a spray water proofer and glazed with color...I think gold would be great. And you could Gorilla Glue on cardborad cutouts.
It won't last more than the season....but that's enough isn't it?

My husband buys a new "shower Scrubber" to use in the shower (the one made out of large net tulle)at least 1 per month. They are all different colors. I want to make inexpensive gifts out of them for a Kids Christmas shop next year. Any Ideas?????
