Probably a stupid question, kinda T2T

This is kind of a trash to treasure question. I buy candles-- tons of them, and a lot come in mason and canning jars. Can these jars safely be used for food storage after the wax has been cleaned out and washed 3-4 times, or do they need to be used for non food stuff?

I have a few that already hold beads and various craft supplies, but I just wondered. I have 6-8 that are big and would be perfect for tomatoes or other canned foods.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Kathy! I usually use them to hold beads and small wood parts but my craft room is running over with old candle jars now.

I wouldn't use them for canning but to store stuff in freezer or fridge I don't see a problem unless it says don't reuse for food! Chinese put lead in lot of stuff now. If they say made in US should be OK.Jan

Here's a previous thread on canning jars from the canning forum. Maybe some of the info would help

Here is a link that might be useful: Canning Jars

Okay. Thanks all. I decided to use them just for craft storage, I found out that if they have any microscopic cracks in the glass that the wax chemicals could get in and mess up any food you put in them. Besides, I just found a huge cache of old jars to use!
