What to do with Plexiglass table top?

I posted this over on the Home Decorating forum also, but I know you guys are really creative when it comes to this type of thing.

I just bought ($3.00 at a yard sale) a coffee table that has an odd-shaped plexiglass top. It just sits on top of a vinyl covered frame which also has 3 ottomans on rollers that slide out from under it. The plexiglass is pretty scratched up. I plan on using this in my DD's new beach themed room in her sitting area.

My initial idea was to decoupodge the underside of the top with cut-out palm trees, then cover the whole back with blue and green paint. I'm open to other suggestions though.

Can anything be done about the scratches? Can they be buffed out or should I just distress it more to give it a "dreamy" effect? Any paints that would make a water-like effect? Any ideas will be appreciated. Keep in mind that sweaty water glasses and who knows what will most likely be left on it, so it needs to hold up well.

What about getting it sandblasted for a frosted look.

An update on this. Sandblasting would have been too expensive, but I did like the frosted idea. I found the permanent Frosting Spray in the link below and I think the tabletop turned out great ~ looks like a new top! If you need paints, this place has the speediest service! I ordered it on a Tuesday and it was delivered the next day UPS!

My table is 45 by 64 without leaves.....seats 6 easily and 8 if extra show up at the last minute. It has 2 15 or 16 inch leaves making it seat 10. My dining room is 12 by 12 but there is an arch into the living room so it appears open. also have a very large chest that stores dishes, a 42 by 45 drop leaf table in the corner with both leaves down, used as a server with one leaf flipped up, a very small corner cupboard and a small 4 drawer chest used for linens.... It's not crowded....except when the table is opened and I dig up 4 extra chairs from another room. I think rectangular tables are best for small rooms.....with a large round table, there is a huge area that is unuseable. People tend to use the 14 or 15 inches around the edges of a table....and the center is for flower arrangements, candles and condiments.

If the tabletop is small enough (less than 4 feet across) you might cut a piece of Wediboard (because it's light weight and weatherproof), apply a thick coat of thinset to one side of it, (thick enough to level everything out) and squash it down on top of the whole mess. Then re-mosaic, using thinset as the adhesive. The problem with this would be that you would have to deal with a whole new edge, higher up than the original wrought iron edge. The new edge would need to be sealed with thinset.

When not full of junk (i.e. mail being sorted, calendar I have not found a place to hang, my kids leftover drinks and other breakfast detritus, registration forms for new appliances, tile samples, unfinished homework, toys) it will have either flowers or a green pottery bowl with fruit or veggies that aren't refrigerated (lately tomatoes.) If the flowers are nice enough (or large) they sit on the dining room table. I go for chaos, function or complete beauty. Or you might find one or both of our two new kittens running across the island (at 9 weeks they run across every surface in the house.) Yes, I could not help myself. It seems that many GW posts include adorable pet photos, particularly cats so I thought I would chip in :) The funny part is the kittens are so fast I have taken at least 20 photos since we adopted them and this was the first one that wasn't a blur. Any yes I wiped the island down after this stunt.

Actually, it's your sofa on the left facing the chairs and possibly the love seat that need a table. The sofa facing the love seat has tables on each side therefore one in front isn't really necessary. You could take the table from your last layout, rotate it and place it closer to the sofa facing the chairs. Place a small table (very small) or garden stool to the right of the love seat for that person to place a drink on. Another option would be two storage ottomans that can be moved around depending on where someone is sitting. If the tops are firm enough a glass can be set on them when your feet aren't!! ;)
