No wonder you are confused. My head was spinning after reading all of the opinions! I was following the original post, but this is my first look at your follow-up. I agree with the others about finding another shade for first lamp if you decide to use it. The present shade is too short and it is the wrong style. My suggestion would be to take the lamp into a lighting store that sells shades. There you will have some expert advice as well as the option to "try on" various shades, much in the same way that you would try on clothes to determine the most flattering fit and combination. Think of the gas you will save! These are some guidelines for shades that I have found useful: 1. Match the base  think size, shape, style, color. Your goal is to match the mood of the base. 2. Compliment the base  the shade should make the base look better without competing with for attention (like that patterned shade on the metal lamp) 3. Hide the switch  the shade should just barely cover the switch (usually the height of harp + ½ inch). Try different sized harps, or add a shade riser to fine-tune. 4. Sizing Rules of Thumb: (1) Shade height should be about ¾ the height of the base (2) Bottom of shade should be wider than widest part of the base. (3) Shade width should be approximately equal the height from bottom lamp base to the top of the lamp stem, (just below the socket cap) I like both lamps. I think either one will be beautiful, but I would not use both of them in that room. Rather than another ginger jar, it would be nice to use a different architectural form on the console. I like the console very much. I do not like the metal/glass (marble?) lamp with the patterned shade. I would look for gorgeous buffet lamps. I am thinking wooden with an antique gold finish (very simple, but elegant). These are high end lamps, but use as examples. If you want the console to appear more sophisticated, remove the dried flower wreath that is resting on the books below, and remove the wicker basket with the greens from the top of the console. Replace it with a grouping of three (the magic number) similar objects (candles, boxes, ceramics, etc.) of different height and proportion. Good luck and keep up the good work. Bodica ...you are a wonder...I was looking around trying to see what you see...wow...it is lovely to have "new" eyes. I am sorry to say that the fp in the foyer is the only one that has no fire. The chimney had to go when we opened the attic for living space. It wasn't workable anyway. The other 4 we use all the winter...even in Alabama:). They are all gas inserts...Victorian. We have the LR one and the DR one and the one in the kitchen and one in the MBR. You saw that we opened the attic space in 2002 and added 2 bedrooms and a bath and great room and office area w/ bookcases. It is 1300 zq ft up there and 2700 sq ft down...lots to clean ! Mr Abbott built the house in 1890. He was the first photographer in Opelika and took many pictures. Unfortunately his widow cleaned out and threw away EVERYTHING when he died. So so sad. All that history lost. The whole 7 block x 7 block area is a registered historic district. There is another on the Southside of town that is growing and changing all the time. The individual house is not registered though. You saw the Photobucket album by now I am sure. There are tons of pics of the area in there for Christmas and the porch tour we have and then the Spring pics I took as well as the kitchen remodel and the evolving gardens...I am struggling with those:). You are too too sweet. I really appreciate ALL you have said as well as all the others. The piano can't be over there as the window shines on it...tuning is affected with 5 min of direct sun. So I will take a pic and show you all what we did. Also got a wonderful centerpiece bowl for the DR table. Moved the china cab and then put it back. It looked funny in the front corner since the mantle is there and sticks out...anyway I think it works. I now need one more wonderful piece for wine glasses etc. Needs to be light wood and rustic sort of or painted wood. Maybe a dark yellow...rubbed old painted finish...anyway will have to "shop" which I don't like... gracie you are so kind ! Thank you. I looked at the cord covers...35.00 !! Are there some that are not so "fussy"...I want smoother or rougher fabric...does that make sense? Don't overlook the address detail in the caption: Oyster Bay Long Island (NY). That was a very upscale address in 1947. This may have been a kitchen intended to be used primarily by paid workers, not the owner's wife, hence the lack of concern over the view from the sink. That's pretty expensive-looking cookware under the table. And Monel, a proprietary metal product made with nickel and copper, is definitely not your average post-war suburban Levittown choice for counters. I'm not sayin it's not a real illustration of a real 1947 kitchen, just that it's an illustration of a very rarified style, not the typical prototype of a mid-century US kitchen. The owners appeared to have emerged fom the long economic stress of the Depression & WWII very well-fixed and immediately ready to remodel their kitchen. Re the cornucopia of veg: I expect it's window dressing since that assemblage of asparagus, corn and eggplant is not a natural, normal season, occurance in LI. By the time you have eggplant and corn, your asparagus is all ferns and no spears. Of course this is not notable today since we have so much out of season produce available all the time. But in 1947 they hadn't started air-shipping asparagus in from the southern hemisphere. It's a cool picture of a very attractive kitchen - thanks for posting it! L
