I've been rescuing furniture, etc for years now and have jokingly been nicknamed "Sunnie's Salvage Yard" anyway for Christmas this year I had an idea. Not sure if its cute and clever or tacky as heck....money is tight with all the medical expenses but with the stress I've been turning out some things I like (its very theraputic!) People seem to like the things they've seen. Been thinking about temporarily converting my garage into "Sunnie's Salvage Yard" for real and have my completed trash to treasures displayed really with an added treat tucked in them like a plant in the planter, or a nice basket or bottle on a set of shelves, a homemade cushion on a chair or stool.

Thought I would give each of them a card with a coupon good for one item from the "Salvage Yard" have it redeemable on one of several dates. On those dates, have the shop decorated with holiday fare and have cookies and cider. Like an open house.

No wrapping, social time with my friends, etc. It has its pros but what do you think?

it has its pro,s.... and there are cons???? not sure I would really want to associate with someone who could find something wrong with this ??? and not sure I can add to it heck you covered the cards... and the cookies and cider..its just to bad wer,re not neighbors I have been finding a very lg. amount of furn.and solid wood stuff lately . I have a lot of redone pcs also . very good thinking hope they are happy. Rick

They would certainly be one of a kind gifts...... nothing mass produced for sure! I love each piece and this may be the only way I can part with them. Each a labor of love....

Picking up this table. It’s 54 x 36 with a built in leaf to extend to 54 x 54 when needed. I think the size difference will give me the breathing room I’m looking for. although I wish it was black, it’s a dark dark brown, almost black, maybe down the road paint it black.

The images you posted look less like plans and more like a very early idea of what a house might look like from the inside. There are few doors or doorways shown, the dimensions are inconsistent. There is little to comment on. You might start with a “bubble diagram” and go from there, or better yet, talk to an architect, letting them know how you live, what your budget is, take them to see your site, to design a home that works for your family. Then come back.

No don't follow that advice and that example plan isn't good. And the color should depend not only on how warm/cool you prefer light, but also the finishes and how close other room's lighting comes to the kitchen, e.g. you don't really want "bluer" lighting of 4000K with honey brown tones or mix 5000K next to 2700K lamps. 4" (or 6") when placed correctly will light both the counters and wash the floor, without focusing your attention to the floor where it shouldn't be in a kitchen. The undercabinet lighting is strictly to compensate for backsplash (if desired) and shadowed counter under the uppers, not be a replacement for ceiling lighting.

hi,
well put and very funny because that is just what has happened to me , although i,m in a deep slump and have not built anything in quite a while . I can build some thing and give it away but i,ve tried to build some things to sell and still can,t do it , the first adrirondack chair I built for sale I even painted red white and blue cause I knew that would sell oops wife sat it in ,it is on the deck, two others I just gave out. f il and dad both got real nice oak benches even built a table for my boss but still can,t sell anything , it is not the same. lol. one addition though you might pick a few brains while you have them all there and get some more ideas , maybe even some more pcs.?? or some stain /paint etc that is,nt getting used, amazing how much of this stuff is sitting in sheds. sounds like fun Rick

I love this idea because I think home-crafted gifts are the best and would personally love to have something a friend or family member had worked on. The people who are your friends will understand the lack of funds that you have right now and I think they will be deeply touched that you have gone to so much effort to still give them a gift for the holidays.

If you want to sell some pieces, I think this is a good way to do it without the overhead of opening a business. Advertising would be your biggest problem, and if your home is not located in an area that is convenient to shoppers, I don't think it will matter how much you advertise, getting customers to come will be a challenge. It might be better to pack everything up and rent a booth at a craft show or flee market and try selling there. Local church and school bazaars are great places for selling this sort of thing. I attended one bazaar last year and the entry/booth fee was only $10 for a large table with electricity. I sold almost everything I took and it was certainly a way to make a lot of extra Christmas money. If you do decide to sell to the public, print up some business cards on your computer and include one with every item you sell and have some available around your booth for pick up by customers. I have several hundred dollars worth of orders that have been placed for items this year, just from repeat business, and thats always a good thing.

I think the idea sounds wonderful, if you think your friends and faimly would like this idea, I would go for it. You could also try the craft show, flea market route to make a little cash for the people you think would not really enjoy the homemade stuff. (if there are any in your circle) All of my friends and most of the family would really go for this idea, but there are a couple of family members who would rather have a gift card from McDonalds then something homemade and I don't waste my time on them any longer. You know if you have any of those type.
