Salvaged a strip of my chldhood bedspread...

now what do I do with it?

I had an all cotton, including the batting, "quilt" that my mom probably got from the Sears catalog on my bed as a child. I still have it, pink roses in a diamond pattern. The problem is it is almost totally destroyed by time and use and sunshine. So I bit the bullet and threw it in the trash yesterday, but I first cut an approx. 16 inch strip off the bottom, the only good part.

I'm trying to think of a use for it in my craft displays. I'm not one to make Teddy bears or such. I also have a utility quilt that my Memere made that's gotten a bit threadbare. I don't want to get rid of it because it is made from my great grandmothers dresses. I'm thinking that could be my craft booth table cloth.

These are not works of art, tho the utility quilt (big triangles of dress fabric and big triangles of white) is all hand made tho very quickly so. I also have a more beautiful quilt of the same ilk in better condition.

I will take a picture of the handmade quilt before it gets worse for starters. And maybe also the roses quilt scrap.

What do you do with (rather large) old things that memories and history make so much more valuable than the object itself?

Save them!LOL I just gave my daughter the prom dress my mom made for me, I thought it was long gone, DD wore it to her prom as I ended up not going to senior prom. DD had a wonderful time in it. Now I wonder if her DD will wear it for Halloween or something as she took it home! Be careful not to use anything too busy or brightly colored on your tables or will take away from the product you are selling. My DD had a quilted bedspread & canopy for her Sears bed, maybe same one as your's. White with pink roses! Jan

Can you turn the 16" strip into a scarf? Add some fringe or trim to the ends? Maybe cut a pass thru hole?

One way that you can obtain "yarn" for your rugs is to buy old wool sweaters and wash them in really hot water with a good amount of detergent and strong agiatation. In other words, ruin them! This will felt the wool and it can then be cut into strips that will not unravel. The wool gets really thick when it felts. For the best felting, it should be 100% wool. The best sweaters to use for this are the finer guage ones. Avoid the ones with a lot of yarn changes, the ones that have designs embroidered into them or knit into the rows. I use these old sweaters to crochet rugs. I have one rug that is all cashmere wool! I crochet them in continuous rounds and place a stitch only through the upper yarn on the previous stitch. Usually, when you crochet, you put the hook under the two threads. I only use the top one. The result is a stitch that has the appearance of a braided stitch. I call them a "East Texas Spiral" rug because I learned to crochet rugs from my old family members. I also make them from any and all old clothes and sewing scraps. I have made a few of them from denim, but it is very heavy and is a workout to wrestle with. Cutting woven fabric stips on the bias will help them not to fray. Usually, though, I just render the old garment into strips in any direction that will yield a strip. Instead of sewing the strips together, I use a cutting method where I cut the strip just to about one inch of the end. I, then, turn the piece around and cut down the other direction for the next strip, thus, leaving a small square of fabric that holds them into one long strip. I used to sew the strips together and it took forever! The little square hinge is just incorporated into the crochet and there is no bulk of seam allowances or double thickness. The felted sweaters are cut up using the same method as the woven fabrics. I find that cutting along the directions that the rows of knitting are running is best, as opposed to cutting across the rows of knitting. But, really, once it is felted, it is pretty sturdy. You can also use wool worsted woven to make rugs. Wool is really durable! I have several made from cut up wool pants and discared wool garments. The only thing is that sometimes the felted wool is so pretty that it is a shame to cut it up! When I cut up the old felted sweaters, I save the seam allowances that I cut off. They look a little like noodles. It takes a lot of cutting up old sweaters to get a basketfull of them, but they are just too good to throw away! They are all wool! The rugs made by RAdd would be a good use for these "noodles". I have a basket of wool noodles by now. Maybe I will try Radd's method of rugmaking with the noodles.

Most of my favorite pieces are family antiques ... and yes, I do know how lucky I am to have these. The bed I grew up in, and the step stool my grandfather made ... he was a well known Buffalo artist ... that was the dog my mother grew up with. (And 2 of my silly kids, Lily the dog and her buddy Bailey). Same room, love the little high chair, chest and mirror. I've been trying to find out something about that chair since I haven't seen another one like it. My tempermental grandmother's clock .. doesn't like the humidity in the summer so refuses to work, and game table. The pictures on the far wall, I have photos of these hanging in my great-grandmother's parlor ... the reflection on the one is bad. My sister told me to repaint the frames, I told her I wasn't touching antique frames! My Mom tells me this is my best piece ... this was also in my bedroom when I was growing up. The glass cabinet was a piece my Mom found at an estate sale shortly I moved into this house ... she said I needed it to display my family treasures ... she was right! the clock is another family piece, this one works all year round. This was in my grandmother's dining room, she had all her china/glassware in it. My sister, who is an interior designer, didn't want it because it was "too primitive" ... lucky me!! This is a jelly cupboard my Mom & I pulled out of my grandparents basement and refinished ... it had been painted to match the rest of the cupboards in the basement. Some of my favorite things ...

I had an appt in the neighboring town today and there's a thrift store there called Saint Vincent-De-Paul dirt cheap prices..I found a thingy, actually I don't know what it is. I haven't measured it but I'd say its a queen size sheet or fancy bed cover of some sort its for sure 100% cotton....soon as its out of the dryer I'll take a pic..Amiee wanted it..50 cents..lol...and a Rowenta steam iron 1 dollar..they say it works, I haven't tried it yet. And a very pretty set of china service for 12 complete with 2 serving bowls, creamer, sugar and gravy boat..all are in mint condition. Actually each piece was wrapped in a clean white bounty paper towel and you can tell they came from a clean home and never went thru a dishwasher. 3 dollars for the full set..I'm going to flip this set..I just seen the same set on ebay or etsy for 275..so I spent 4.75 thrifting lol

We moved into a neighborhood of 1960s-70s colonials. One of the many things I liked about our house was the black slate foyer floor. A new friend came by and mentioned that "that slate is really easy to remove" and she had just put new large-format tile in her foyer instead. 12 years later and I still prefer my black slate. The other thing I wouldn't and won't change is the kitchen curtains. The kitchen faces the street and includes a breakfast nook, so we need some curtains, but I don't want to block the view altogether. The house came with cafe curtains, as well as an upper tier of curtains (not a valance) for the larger breakfast nook windows. They are somewhat sheer, maybe translucent is the word, which I like: it's like looking through lightly-frosted glass so I can see if someone is walking by the house without really being able to see who they are. The little ruffle probably dates them the most, but given that they are otherwise plain it's cute. What I'd really like is a toile pattern, but I just can't find a fabric that is translucent, without being "shiny".

Jan I have worn one of my mom's brides maid dresses for Halloween (years ago). The same Halloween I lent one of her tiny sister's dresses to a tiny friend. I think I still have them but I'm not sure, I may have passed them on.

I'm with Sunny...I too save them! Kathy...I saw an idea once that I tucked away where someone used a scarf of their mothers as a background for a shadow box. In the box they put a small picture of their mother and other small items of hers they had kept. You could do one and put things (if you have them) from your childhood or pictures, etc.

I'm thinking how neat it would be to put your childhood pics on the strip since it was your bedspread, could include pic of you & mom or siblings, hankie, some small favorite toy you had. Might be able to use a shallow drawer & make it like a shadow box. Jan

Ohh. I didn't actually take the bag its in to the dump yet. Maybe I'll look for a square for a shadowbox, cuz I do like the scarf idea as well.

Well I found a use for the part I was supposed to discard - mushrooms! I posted on it at Crafts and Decorations, link below. I forgot I had started this over here.

I also love the shadow box idea, I need to save a few more pieces.

if you're handy with sewing, you can incorporate the strip as part of a pillow...
kind of along the same concept as a crazy quilt, i cut pieces of sentimental clothing/blankets, and made a 'crazy' pillow.
definitely hang onto it, if shadow box doesn't work out.

If you can sew,hem it and hang it on a wall, out of the sunlight. My grandmother took her wedding dress circa 1900 and made it into a fancy dress for my walking doll, a doll about three feet tall, popular in the 1950's.

I saw where they had taken a piece of old bedspread, embroidered a bit of info about it (date, name, etc) and framed it. It was a lovely way to remember a bit of history while creating a nice piece of art.
