Ideas for old Bassinet / Moses Basket

Hi all! My youngest daughter has outgrown her bassinet and moses basket. Before I give them away, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas to use them in another manner.

The bassinet belonged to her father when he was a baby. It is white wicker on two folding legs with wheels. It's a little wobbly and made of thin wood, so we don't think it'll survive for another generation.

The moses basket is one of the ones found at boutique shops. It is a woven basket with two handles.

My only thought so far was to take the legs off of the bassinet and to use it for toy storage. But I don't think it will last long that way.

The bassinet would be darling with old linens in a bedroom or nursery or great for laundry in a laundry room. I know of a home here in Spokane that has one on a covered porch filled with red geraniums. The same ideas could apply to the moses basket, but it could also work well for magazines, fabric stashes, balls of yarn, etc. I love having a big open basket (well . . . mines actually a metal feed trough, but same concept) to throw in quilts for the kids in the family room. This way it is easy to pick up and put away, so it looks neat without a lot of effort. Before this the kids drove me crazy with quilts all over the floor in the winter.

How about taking the legs off it and placing it up on a cabinet or something in the kitchen? It would look neat with greenery in it, maybe some books or bright colored table linens spilling out of it. If it's not picked up and carried with a lot of weight in it, it should last a long, long time!

If it belonged to her dad, I sure wouldn't get rid of it. Find a safe place for it and pass it on down to your grandkids!

What a lovely yard! You have so many nice installations -- I especially like the vignette of the raven, the cultivator and hosta around the tree. And the green "bones" of the yard -- the hostas, the ferns -- look wonderfully lush and healthy. If your looking for a quickj change this summer you probably want annuals -- kinda like getting wild throw pillows for your good conservative couch! I'm not good at garden design, but if you're looking for a quick punch of color, there are a million coleus that provide color/texture/pattern even in shade. Cardinal flower (lobelia) could give you some height and color in the partial shade areas, and Foamflower (tirella) could give you a nice delicate look with all those ferns and hosta. It looks like you've got some Moses-in-a-basket tradescantia. It's tender, but it grows nicely in the summer. (I take cutttings in the fall, then plant it out again (in hanging baskets) in the spring.) Another shot of purple and silver is Persian Shield (strobilanthes) Again, tender in our zone, but easy to grow. If you're looking at perrenials, how about a rose of sharon near the pond? I have some standard purple and rose colored ROS, that I've trained like topiaries -- simply clipped all the side branches off. Within a couple of years they became rather striking, very tropical loking trees. Unfortunatley, the old-fashioned ones throw about a million seeds every spring, but they do look nice. But you have lovely gardens already -- and a cute cat!

Good thread! Our bathroom closet was constantly cluttered by small containers & other items. These are extras & things that we need in there but don't use every day. I took clear plastic shoeboxes & labeled them - First Aid, Bath Items, Dental, etc. Even DH has learned to look in them. I think one of the best things we've done is digitize our music. I'd been wanting a larger cd changer so we could store our cd's in it & get rid of the jewel cases. Then we began looking at Apple's AirTunes. Now we have this neat little gizmo plugged in & we can play our music wirelessly from the computer to any room in the house with speakers. We've put our cd's in storage & now we very seldom buy cd's, we just buy the digital version from iTunes. I know something like this isn't for everyone, but DH & I are both "computer geeks". It has helped me with organization - no cd's to organize, no need for storage space. I made a small "button book" using a binder. I attached extra buttons, in their little plastic bags, to sheets of paper with double-sided tape. Next to each one I wrote what clothing it went on. It only took me about 15 min. to put it together, & now I know exactly where to go to find a button. And I don't have to spend time looking through a jumble of them to find the right one. Lily, thanks for the info on stainless steel. I had a transparent pink gazing globe but the reflective ones are far more magical. I like lots of whimsy in my garden. I have solar owls, penguins!, flowers and more plus hand blown glass bird baths, fairy and cherub statues, bunnies...just a menagerie. I also have a bird bath planter with a solar fairy house. When the light goes out I tell my granddaughter the fairies have gone to bed. The light doesn't work anymore so I told her I think the fairies have moved :-) She's nine so she's not buying any of it, just rolls her eyes! Vaporvac, How is your midge battle going? I don't seem to be having a huge problem this year. I think your method worked well for me. I do have a newspaper barrier between the mulch and soil this year, maybe that's helping too. Plus the mulch is only about 1/2 inch thick so maybe not deep enough to pupate in? Bowling ball gazing globe? That sounds interesting! I'd love to see how that turns out. I just bought three hydrangeas today. Tiny Tuff Stuff, Seaside Cape Cod and Double Delights Stargazer. It stays cool here pretty late in the year so I generally get only two flushes a season so there's a lot of time when nothing else is going on. I love irises but they don't do well here. They'll flower one year and never again. I like the idea of a "path" so I can have border plants and some "movement". I also want to break it up a bit to be able to get to the larger roses. I just think it looks odd to have all these roses lined up like soldiers. I think it's tougher to work with geometrics rather than a sinuous bed but I'm stuck with what we have since the beds are raised. And I get overwhelmed by, to me what seems like such a large space. The rest of my rose beds in this area are small and broken up with fountains, benches, fairies and such. The statues and such are more for winter interest since all the plants are deciduous so not much going on once the leaves have dropped. Moses, no offense but I think I'll pass on the T-Rex. I do like gargoyles though ;-) This is my Alice garden. There is also a little pig statue and at some point there will be a "teapot" garden feature. Probably not your "cup of tea" though, lol. sharon

Yes, think both high and low. If your current toddler prefers a cave-like bed, you could have that bed down low, mattress sitting on a nice carpet piece, with the crib built on a platform just a bit higher than normal. So, the small child's bed is under the crib of baby, with some kind of climb-up play area on top, above crib, if your ceilings are high enough. When the child is ready for a bigger bed, maybe they will want it up on the high level. By then, the baby may want the low level bed and the middle area can become the play space. In the dorms in college, my soon-to-be husband's mattress was on the floor, half under his platform on which his desk sat, looking out the windows that were higher on the wall, almost like clerestory windows. Even people who do not like tight spaces will not mind their legs under a platform if their heads are sticking out from under it. I recently got fabric storage cubes at Wayfair that are 12" x 12" and open at top. They sell wooden shelf units that make a grid for these fabric cubes. You can get ones with places for labels on the front. I am holding my off-season pajamas in one of these cubes and was surprised how much they hold. I bet this is the right size for baby clothes and supplies. Storage cubes with labels. The safest way to use these might be to use wall brackets to hold boards (fastened to the brackets, not just sat upon them) spaced for the use of these bins. I looked at Houzz for sets like this and theirs were all smaller bins 9x10x11 or so. Plus, you would have to attach the wooden cubical piece with an anti-tipping device to the wall to protect it from the toddler, so doing the wall shelves may be easier than rigging all that up. Plus, you can use the larger cubes. Later, without the cubes, you simply have shelves! This system means buying 1 x12 planks (many places will cut them to length for you), brackets, sandpaper and paint or other finish without having to buy a piece of furniture.

The one in my third floor has been around for sixty-some years, at least. It was used for me as a baby then my mother used it for a laundry basket (it never did have legs). All of my children slept in it before they were in cribs. It now holds a lot of stuffed animals that my daughters left behind and are entertainment for our grandchildren. I kind of hope that a granddaughter might want to use it someday, if I am around that long.

I would keep the bassinet the way it is with legs, if it belonged to a family member. When I was pregnant, I originally wanted a cradle. My idea was to then fill it with toys once the baby got older (stuffed animals, dolls, something like that - not Legos). Since I had a boy, this idea was tossed! Although vintage dolls would look nice.

For the basket maybe you can line it and put potted plants in it. Don't know how big it is so i'm not sure this would work. But something along those lines or like was Des Arc said.

I'm with the others, I'd probably keep the bassinet for sentimental reasons and try to find a use for it - use it to display a collection of something. Would look really cute lined with an old quilt to display old dolls. If your bathroom is large set it in the corner to hold rolled up towels.

The moses basket - I used one in my kids room to store their shoes in when they were little. Otherwise they were all over the floor. They're also nice by the back door to throw shoes in. Or line it with a garbage bag and plant it full of flowers. Poke a few holes in the bottom of the bag for drainage. It should last several years if you set it inside the garage or a shed for the winter where it stays dry. Or use this one in the LR or den for toys - teach them young how to pick up and put away. If it's convenient and easy, they'll do it and you won't have to.
