Digging up bones....

My husband is very ill and I dont get many breaks but last evening the family took over for a few hours to give me some down time. I took a walk (and a shovel) to my favorite woods where I had noticed what looked like an old household trash mound. Well let me tell you I hit the mother lode! Three trips out of the woods to cart it home! Next time I bring a wagon with the shovel! Came home, cleaned it up and researched. Found:

small wooden window with labels attached

tons of enamel ware

all intact!

I am very excited. Talk about trash to treasures!

My kids warn me that one day I will dig up bones or something disgusting! Neighbor knows I walk there and gave me permission to dig on his property so its cool. He thinks I'm nuts. Maybe I am, but what fun!

What great treasures. I would be so excited also. We bought some woods and I couldn't wait to find a trash pile. But I only found just a few neat things. But where we use to live our neighbors had old trash piles all over their property. I had so much fun going through them. I even found one of those old petal cars, but it was in really bad shape. Now I wish I would have gotten it after seeing and learning from here. But that was at least 10 years ago.

Lol, poor Daniella. Ask him if he will do my laundry too. I throw it all in together and everything looks like crap, lol. I was telling John about this and he said ohhh good idea about the pots and the roots now that winter is coming he is wanting to bring in more of them so he is liking the idea of burying the pots in the ground then lifting the pots for the winter. He forgets before we did all these flower beds and I told him about this he told me I was crazy and why would I want to dig a hole and buy a pot. Just put the dang things in the ground and leave them there he said, lol. How soon he forgets now that he is getting excited that they are going to start blooming, lol. I bet we have sunken pots next year, lol. The one I had last year bloomed in the garage nearly all winter long. I think he is remembering that and realizing all those in the ground are going to have to be cut down and he will miss them blooming. Who wants to make a bet he digs up some of his to bring in the house instead of cutting them, lol.

I hate to dissapoint ya, but girlfriend you HAVE bears in Randolph..!!Now it depends where in Randolph you are.. I am in the Berkshire Valley section of Roxbury- bordering Wharton & Jefferson & Kenvil. But I happen to live on a street that cuts into the Berkshire valley Wildlife mangement area.. - about 2000acres of preserve...haha So we got BEARS. one got my garbage last week. I have SEEN the coyotes dead and alive in person just taking a walk AND a little more than a year ago, a MOUNTIAN LION ran infront of my car- in front of my HOUSE! I am NOT kidding you. I called all my neighbors- i thought it was their dogs.. they called me the next morning..it was on the news.. a mountain lion in Roxbury.. it made complete sense. My mind oculd not comprehend what i was seeing- but i kept telling everyone it was not a deer, it was a very large dog with an extremely thick and long and low tail and it RAN sooo gracefully- like no other dog i have ever seen. DUH- cuz it ran like a CAT. me not beign a cat person.. i didnt make the connection.. I googled it.. and that is what i SAW with my own eyes my dear. Welcome to the STICKS! No one ever thinks of NJ this way. anyway- more importantly.. when you coming over??!! LOL

Welcome to the Cooking Forum, imscattered. I know what you mean, I have a couple of stepchildren who are adults but will not eat meat with bones in it. It confuses me. Even KFC now has boneless chicken, customers "demanded" it. People don't want bones, and they want easily portable food that they can eat in the car. I, however, raise grassfed beef, heritage turkeys, chickens for meat, my own pigs. We cure and smoke bacon, render lard, all that good stuff. I cook from scratch, not from a box or a can. I even roast my own coffee and occasionally grind wheat for flour. Many of us here cook fresh vegetables, bake our own bread, and yes, eat meat with bones in it. Annie

I've taken an interest in learning about Florida gardening because I plan to move down there eventually. What I've read again and again about discouraging nematodes is to maintain a heavy layer of organic mulch. This will eventually break down and improve your soil. Some people mix in cheap clay kitty litter to make their soil heavier. Another possibility is to heavily underplant roses with Marigolds. There is one seed strain of French Marigolds in particular which tested as being very effective at deterring root-knot nematodes -- Tagetes patula 'Ground Control' (aka 'Single Gold'). The one caveat is that the effects won't be seen until the following year, and to maintain the effect, you'll want to replant them every year. As far as planting too deep -- I think many here would say I am guilty of this, but there hasn't been any negative effect which I can see. When I was putting this garden together, I planted my roses (own-root bands that were grown-on in pots for a few months) directly into the native soil in late Summer 2013. Prior to planting them, I had laid down sheets of cardboard to smother weeds and grass, and covered that with trimmings from a tree I was cutting back. This accumulated to about three inches, but it was a very "airy" three inches. Over all that, I put down an additional 6-8" of "proper" mulch (partially composted shredded wood chips). At first, I made concave "dishes" around each rose to allow water to be directed towards their roots and keep mulch away from the canes as I kept reading I was supposed to do, but after the first Winter, the beds were pretty much leveled out. In Spring, I worked an additional 2" of composted manure into that layer of mulch. This meant that what was once the border between canes and roots was now about 8-10" below the surface. Why did I do this? I wanted to give the roses an "early start" on having deep roots for getting water, and anticipated that canes buried beneath the mulch line would eventually root further up, allowing for easier access to fertilizer applied at the surface. Companion perennials were planted directly into this "mulch/compost" layer in Spring 2014, and they grew like gangbusters in their first year. Last Autumn, I wanted to continue adding organic matter to the beds, so I "harvested" fallen tree leaves and spread them to a "fluffy" three inches thick. I also started collecting used coffee grounds from Starbucks -- one 13gal kitchen garbage can-full per day -- and spread this about 2-3" over the leaves. It took about three months to complete. Winter snow has packed this down a bit, and the previous year's additions have started breaking down, so where I'm at now is about where I was after the first layer of mulch -- about 6-8" above the original soil line. This week, I started some early pruning. While there is some snow still remaining in half of the garden, where it is gone there was already life in the top layer of coffee grounds and leaves -- various soil critters are waking up and finding lots of food waiting for them. I've noticed some freeze damage (naturally) on some rose canes, but nothing soft and mushy which would indicate "cane rot". True, this could emerge later in the season, but I also never saw it last Spring when the roses' canes were also buried to about the same level. Why is this not harming my roses? Perhaps because what's covering the canes is actively being broken down by the various organisms in the soil, and that process is different than simply being a blanket of "wet" around the rose canes. Worms and critters keep moving the material around, and fungi digesting the material are sopping up the extra moisture. Yup Tech thats it. But mine is slightly lighter green with a great blue green dripped glaze on the top. I've been researching the window today. Its a narrow little sliding window, with paper labels that say "standard clearlite single" on it. Best I can figure its roughly 1940's and looks like one of those sliding screen things people used to pop in the bottom when they would open a window for ventilation but wanted to keep the insects out. Doesnt look like it was ever used, and I cant figure why they would use a glass one....

Also dont know what I'm going to do with it. Leaning towards cleaning it, preserving the labels on it and propping it up on a shelf. The vases are going to my Mom, she loves odd pieces in pink and green, the Italian pitcher in my kitchen with tall wooden spoons in it.

Most of the enamel ware has rusted places and is in rough shape. I was thinking a small garden outside my kitchen. bury the bad spots and have some cute plants growing out of the top of the pitcher and basins, etc. Any ideas??

This thread reminds of my "bottle digging days" -- what fun that was!!!!!!!! I think that the T2T, junk, TS, and all of it appeals to that kid in us who never got to do enough treasure hunting.

Goodness gracious!!! Sounds like a dream come true for me!!!! I don't think I'd ever want to leave... at least not till every last treasure had been found.

What fun! I'd love to find that kind of "buried treaure"!

Is your window like the one here? I used clear window decals made for inkjet printers and did the wording on Print Shop. The decals just peel off in case I'd want to change it.

Reminds me of my bottle digging days too. Of course, I dont think I ever found anything to compare with your treasure. You really hit the motherlode.

I used Hammermill clear window decals (purchased them at Walmart a while back). Can't find them anywhere on the web, but I think office supply stores would carry them as well.

I did a lot of measuring to make sure it would fit. I think I had to reverse the wording as well before printing. I didn't get all the "bubbles" out of mine, but you have to get close to notice. And the Bath part is a seperate piece since the window was so long.

I'm keeping my eyes open for another small window so I can do this again with a Tea Shop design for my kitchen.

Tooooo coooool!!! Congratulations!!!

There are three old home sites on our place but the ground is hard, hard clay. I am always trying to get my husband to help me dig but he says "that is your hobby, not mine."

Details please about where you found your window and anything you know about it. I dont think I'll put any decals on mine since the original stickers are in wonderful condition and quite cute. How did you hang yours?

Sunnie - I picked mine up at a flea market for about $7.00. Don't know anything about it though. I already had the idea of what I wanted to do with it and thought the size/shape was perfect. I just used a sawtooth hanger in the back to hang it.
I'd love to see yours if you can post a picture!
