Thanks! I made this cement ball out of an old light globe, filled with concrete(stuck a pc of rebar to poke into the ground)then smash the glass, and you have a globe that is durable for outdoors! I was still too sick to go to the mtg wed nite, but hope to be welcoming fellow gardeners at my place on the 30th!!! I like to joke around and say that I garden just to have green stuff around my garden art!lol! I just started a seed tray with sweet peas, hollyhocks,>and some icelantic poppy seeds that Frank gave me. I have only started seeds once before and it turned out a moldy mess, but am willing to try again! Looks like I have 9 dahlias that have survived me too!WhooHoo!

Well, the one my wife made was quite easy. She used a bowling ball from a local Salvation Army store. First, she plugged the finger holes with auto body filler (aka "Bondo"). She filled in any small scratches and nicks as well, and lightly sanded the entire surface so the glue would stick better. Next, she found some plastic and rubber lizards at a dollar store. She found some at a craft store and at Party World too. If you don't want to use lizards, you can get snakes, frogs, insects, spiders, scorpions, dinosaurs, butterflies, ladybugs, or whatever appeals to you. She glued them on with Testors model cement, but pretty much any glue should work including silicone, Liquid Nails, polyurethane, etc. She set the bowling ball in a bowl so that it wouldn't roll around and glued the lizards on one at a time. After applying the glue to the bottom of a lizard and placing it on the ball, she put a piece of soft foam over it and a little weight to press the lizard down while the glue was drying. Then she would do another one, until the whole surface (except the bottom) was covered with lizards. Finally, she cleaned off any excess glue and sprayed the whole surface with glittery spray paint. And she will add the final touch by highlighting the lizards in another color of paint.

I have to say that I'm not sure about where to find a 'ready-to-go' ball that size, but there's gotta be SOMETHING. I agree with the rubber/concrete idea, as there are a TON of beach-balls out now for you to use. My first thought was to find a giant Christmas Ornament (something like they'd decorate a city-tree with)...but shipping the darned thing would kill you because of the size of the box... Um...what else...this one would be hugely heavy...would likely need "equipment" to move it, but what about contacting your local construction companies and finding out where someone could obtain an old wrecking ball, or calling the local concrete dealers to see what they might be able to procure for you... But since I'm fresh out of ideas, and it's early in the day with no caffeine boost yet, I think you might be relegated to doing the rubber/crete ball- simply for cost-sake.

Yep Flag, it is sitting on a concrete block and paver. I got about 15 of them at a garage sale last year for fifteen cents each!!! The lady thought I was nuts for wanting them but I thought I had died and gone to heaven for getting them so cheaply! LOL I agree, shipping would be so expensive but it would be an awesome exchange. Kat, yes that is a glass totem and the green border you are referring to is actually indoor/outdoor carpet (blush). We have a dog who has a ton of allergies but she eats everything. She is like a little vacuum cleaner! LOL We had some Rose of Sharon bushes in there and other flowers which are not good for dogs but she still would eat them anyway. When we pulled the flowers out we tried covering the area with wood mulch but of course she ate that too. The carpet works out great, and I don't have to weed the area.
