The main reason my painting process was so tedious was because I kept changing my mind about the type of finish I wanted (and the hutch is huge so each coat took forever). The final result ended up being a happy accident :-) I painted everything by hand until I decided to give up the color washing and use solid paint. Was so burned out by then that DH used his sprayer, I did the glazing (a wipe on with brushes/wipe off with damp rags and brushes, trial and error process) and then DH sprayed the poly finish. Wax removal and painting details are in the 1st post and the May 4th @ 00:31 posting. Even though I ended up using solid paint, the bleaching after using wax remover and acetone did help remove the last bits of furniture wax (paint won't adhere to wax, so prep is VERY important). If your piece has a poly finish and no wax, you can probably just clean it with TSP and prime before painting. I did this with my DD's dresser and it worked fine.

lyn, the coloring is beautiful! nice job. what color green did you use? I love layering colors. I did my blue doors w/5 different shades, along w/the walnut base stain.just in case anyone wants to see the process,, completely raw, left, coat of stain, right I used milk paint mostly, maybe a little chalk paint. I mixed diff colors of the milk paint and overlapped w/wet brush to get blending. This is how milk paint looks once dry (and why yes, I do have a paint hoarder issue, thank you. I've used every single one of those cans of paint!) you have to pick where you want distressing. has to be where it would occur naturally, so the edging gets it the mostapplication of pure Tung Oil. really makes those colors pop, eh? after a few days it gets absorbed. repeated applications of tung oil will act like a varnish, harden and close off the pores. almost dry here. now you can see how the blending of the colors w/the wood really tie in to one another. (I had seeded glass cut and installed it myself.) the backs of these doors remained the walnut stain color. and their final resting spot after I installed the vintage door hardware. the colors really darkened and I ended up coating this with poly.

Sasha, also check OfferUp and Facebook Market Place. Also google for estate auctions in central New York— there are websites that list all the auctions going on in a region and they often post pics—i.e. ‘Invaluables‘. You can register your email and be notified. There is one online auction site called EBTH that has great mid century listings that go for cheap. They will arrange shipping for you. Sign up for alerts with them. And don’t pass up e-bay. You can search Ebay for your area—just look on the left side of the Ebay search page and enter your zip and any other filters you are interested in. You will notice there are antique dealers who list a lot and you can develop relationships with them, ask questions etc. If you put an item on your watchlist you will sometimes get a lower offer from the dealer and you can further negotiate for a lower price. Just be sure to look at the photos carefully and read the fine print. You can sign up for alerts on Ebay too. If you find a vendor you like on ebay you can sometimes find out if they have a shop or warehouse and they may let you visit if they think you are a serious buyer. Also check thrift stores like Good Will and Salvation Army and the hospital and heart association thrift shops. Good Will has half off days. And local consignment shops. We have one in our neighborhood where you can find the MCM pieces and Baker, Century, Mastercraft, Widdicomb, Dunbar Wormley for a few dollars. You will have to do your research and learn the market and recognize quality but it is a fun hobby and a way to furnish your home with quality for reasonable dollars. You will make some mistakes but you can always turn around and sell it to someone who will like it better.

I am glad you are happy. I like the chandy with your space and table. I like the color (black) of the chairs, but I have to be honest, from a design and scale perspective and size of space the chairs aren’t appropriate. The style is in conflict with the more modern lines of the table and other elements and the height of the backs makes the space look squeezed. A lower back black chair would be so much better. If you decide to do a piece on the far wall, keep it open and light. I could see a black console with metal and shelves above. Something like this. Keep buffet lines simple. Could be black rather than wood. Your choice. Keep it to about 48” wide. Not too big.
