Thanks so much for all the great ideas and opinions. Here is a little more info. It's actually all one piece and not a top and bottom and there were never doors on it. There is a label somewhere that says "True Grand Rapids-Cabinet Making Certified" although they advertised it as being in excellent condition it's definitely not. I like the examples that were posted and my family room has a side table and coffee table that are distressed off white (Broyhill Attic Heirloom series) but the wall behind it will be a tan color when the drywall is finished in a week or two, the floor it will sit on will be honey oak and the chairs around the table are black. My table actually matches the color of the piece now but I always have a table cloth on it these days (I've got 4 kids). I've kicked around the idea of going barn red but either black, off white, or red, I'm just not sure the formal piece will look right going rustic although some of the examples above have that same formal look and they painted up very nice. I'll try to post pictures of the surroundings tomorrow. Thanks again for the ideas and opinions.

I purchased most of my ironstone through ebay or local antique shops, but Home Goods is also a good source. If you won't be using them for serving, I've seen Goodwill finds spray painted with a coat of white paint too. I like Tuesday's suggestion of mixing white and green. I did this in my dining room hutch, mixing my antique white ironstone teacups and saucers with a few of my green milk glass pieces. Also google for estate auctions in central New York— there are websites that list all the auctions going on in a region and they often post pics—i.e. ‘Invaluables‘. You can register your email and be notified. There is one online auction site called EBTH that has great mid century listings that go for cheap. They will arrange shipping for you. Sign up for alerts with them. And don’t pass up e-bay. You can search Ebay for your area—just look on the left side of the Ebay search page and enter your zip and any other filters you are interested in. You will notice there are antique dealers who list a lot and you can develop relationships with them, ask questions etc. If you put an item on your watchlist you will sometimes get a lower offer from the dealer and you can further negotiate for a lower price. Just be sure to look at the photos carefully and read the fine print. You can sign up for alerts on Ebay too. If you find a vendor you like on ebay you can sometimes find out if they have a shop or warehouse and they may let you visit if they think you are a serious buyer. Also check thrift stores like Good Will and Salvation Army and the hospital and heart association thrift shops. Good Will has half off days. And local consignment shops. We have one in our neighborhood where you can find the MCM pieces and Baker, Century, Mastercraft, Widdicomb, Dunbar Wormley for a few dollars. You will have to do your research and learn the market and recognize quality but it is a fun hobby and a way to furnish your home with quality for reasonable dollars. You will make some mistakes but you can always turn around and sell it to someone who will like it better.

I am glad you are happy. I like the chandy with your space and table. I like the color (black) of the chairs, but I have to be honest, from a design and scale perspective and size of space the chairs aren’t appropriate. The style is in conflict with the more modern lines of the table and other elements and the height of the backs makes the space look squeezed. A lower back black chair would be so much better. If you decide to do a piece on the far wall, keep it open and light. I could see a black console with metal and shelves above. Something like this. Keep buffet lines simple. Could be black rather than wood. Your choice. Keep it to about 48” wide. Not too big.
