50+ empty jars

My sister bought me a box of these small canning jars at a yard sale. I made some labels for a few of them. My grandson filled one jar with kisses and another with hugs, and we quickly put lids on them before they could leak out :)Now we can get a hug or a kiss from him even when he's not here! I made a few other labels that say "snips" "snails" "puppy dog tails"..and of course "hugs" and "kisses". I used a different font for each,but the same silver discs and paper and color ink. Will make another set for my other grandson, and one for my granddaughter that will be "sugar" "spice" "everything nice"...loved this quick project! The silver discs came from Dollar General from the frames and crafts section, had puffy plastic words on them that I pulled off and stuck my own typed words onto. I'll still have a lot of these jars leftover...maybe I should make a spice-rack type holder for some more empty ones with labels on them...hope you can see, had to use cell phone to take pics

They would make great gifts at Christmas filled with peppermint candy ... or miniature marshmallows... spiced tea...especially with your creative labels and add some festive ribbon. Great find from your sis'. Jeanne S.

Like dian57, I keep my empties with my "fulls." My pantry shelves always have about the same number of jars on them (give or take a few dozen that have been given away, or are harbouring leftovers, in the dishwasher, or seconded for wasp trap duty). But in November about 90% of them are full, while in May about 90% of them are empty. After every dishwasherload I take the clean empties into the pantry and put them where there's space, rearranging a wee bit as necessary, pushing full jars to the front & grouping batches of the same size together near things that I can in that size. I used to keep my empties in the basement and my fulls in the kitchen, and I NEVER could make myself do the trek just to put empty jars away so there were bags and piles of empties near the stairs waiting to be taken down (and getting knocked over by cats, dogs, nehpews, etc.). ANd I'm bad at getting around to big re-org projects, too, so it works better for me to just do a teeny bit of re-org each time I do dishes. Can I say, btw, that the every time I take several used canning jars out of a dishwasher, I get a little happy feeling? It reminds me that my home-canned food is now an integral part of my life, if you see what I mean. When I began, my canned goodies were few and often esoteric things saved for special occasions or to show off for guests. Now the home-canned-goods pantry is just where I get my tomato sauce from, as a matter of course. Everyday joy. Z

Its fine, just refrigerate as mentioned. I always end up with a half filled jar at the end of a canning session. Usually, because I make big batches of jam, I fill pint jars instead of the 8 ounce ones. That way, if I have half pint, it fits into an 8 ounce. Same as above, fitting in a smaller 4 ounce jar too A vacuum will still be present, but because of the extra head space its wise to keep it in the fridge.

I had the strangest thing happen yesterday. I had the whole spiel typed out to tell you all and got booted so just dropped the thing. I went into Walmart to buy a roll of masking tape to use on my marking tables today at the Farmer"s Market. Thought I'd cruise down the canning isle and see if they had restocked lids. I didn't need any but just wanted to check. To my surprise all the canning supplies were marked down with those big red and black stickers they use. Quart and pint Ball jars were $5. Wide mouth and reg. were the same. Lids were $1. reg. and $1.50 wide mouth. The platinum wide mouth jars were $2.50 for the four pack. Ball salt $1. I bought 20 doz. of each size lid and 6 doz. of reg quarts and pints. The new freezer jam packs were $2. I bought 6 pks. I did leave a lot there but spent over $100. I got home thinking what a bargain. Very seldom do canning supplies go on sale here. This is a farming community. When I got home I realized I forgot the masking tape. So, after dinner I went back [it's just around the corner] and picked up the tape and went to check the canning isle and everything was back to the original price. Evidently someone marked things down in error. The blue enamel canner with rack was still $13. though.

I clean them out and keep putting the covers through the dishwasher a few times to get the smell to go away. I love that they are airtight. One was a pretty shape so I put it on the table with cranberry sauce in it. It was festive looking and popped the cover on to put in the fridge when finished. Others I use for food storage at the cottage so no little critters will get. Corn starch, salt, brown sugar and have dried herbs from the garden in a few.

I like them!! Easy project too.

You could also use them in the bathroom with bath salts and handmade lotions.

njtomboy...that's just the cutest thing! how funny that I collect pearl necklaces from thrift stores and yard sales,too, so I have a lot of pearls and pearl beads :) both of those are really great and something I could make..thank you so much for sharing.
these are all excellent ideas, I've made lots of bath salts in the past,soaps,bath fizzies,etc. and these would be perfect for bath salts, thank you so much Lydia:) Thank you Lynn:) Thank you Jeanne:)
I helped my grandson paint some broken pine cone pieces with green glitter glue, we put some in a jar and called them dragon scales. The pine cones are cinnamon scented so that's a bonus:)

You'll have a lot of fun using these. I had a similiar jar & for my sister/BIL's 25th anniver. I put in blue tissue paper (both like blue), unrolled quarters, dimes, nickels & poured into the jar. (it WAS a silver anniv, after all :-)
There were none others like it at the reception !!!

I was thinking the Christmas idea as well Jeanne, and filled with all the goodies mentioned, what a great gift.
Gotta start thinking Christmas around here early!

Another idea is to put an inch or so of beach sand, a few shells and a votive candle in it.
