I hope Brushworks, Paintguy (or other Pro applicators!) chime in here too!!! You'll have to carefully assess the peeling areas. * Is it just the outer finish layers, OR is some actual delamination of wood occuring too? * If you're sure you're gonna PAINT, do a "medium" intensity sanding of everything. You dont' have to get to bare wood. * You DO have to sand to a sound surface though! * Apply a top-notch primer and lightly sand that when dried well. NOW you're finally ready to paint! However....on beautiful old doors...it's almost a shame to paint them!! Are they solid wood, or a cheaper laminate of some type? Faron

If you decide to remove the old storm door and frame, you'll have a bunch of holes in the trim that will need to be filled and painted. (With wood trim, the first signs of paint failure is often around those filled holes.) That or replace the trim with new. I would just feel better with replacing the storm storm and having that extra layer of protection for your entry door, the wee bit of added R Value and, if you choose the right door, added source of ventilation.

We used brick from the back (removed window, replaced with sliders) and replaced it. But, I think it's cute and harkens to a wonderful era . I'd fix it up. If you have grandbabies, it's a great "special" gramma mailbox.
