I would remommend placing a 'real' roof under anything like cans. It wouldn't cost much to roof it with paper and shingles, which don't cost much. Shingles show up on the side of the road often for free. Check constructions sites. They throw lots of them away. Don't be afraid to ask. Once it's roofed, there will be no leaking problem, period. I like to paint metal with alkyd paint. It's oil based industrial paint, and can be found at all the big paint and hardware stores, and also at Habitat Restores and other stores like them. If you find it at Habitat, it will be far less expensive. Even if you don't paint or seal it, the roof underneath will take care of any problems and won't show under the cans. If the cans start to deteriorate beyond what you like, just replace them. Just a note. If the roof is rusting, the rust will stain materials around it as water drips from it. Linda

well this is a tad old but the "canned" caught my eye. If anything, buy it bagged in the frozen section, whole, or in a plastic container from the store that you can quickly remove it from and place in safer storage. The lining of those cans is poison. Unless it states there is no Bishpenol A or BPA that is an endocrine disruptor. Why chance it if there are choices? (canned tomato anything is really bad) Some (many who make money discounting information) may claim it's not harmful. (Like, the fda/epa.) Still. Why risk it. When you don't have to.

this has a lot to do with if you can secure the new roof to the roof deck and that has a lot to do with how your house was built. Some metal roofing MUST be placed directly on top of a solid, smooth, roof material. Others can be installed with an air gap between the old roof and the new metal roof. Wood strips (purlins) are placed over the old roof and attached securely to the roof deck. The new metal roof is then attached to these wood strips. I think this would be possible for you to do. However, I would think that maybe removing the roof would be worth your while, as you may get some money for it because many metals are very expensive right now and companies are willing to buy and recycle it. Removing a metal roof would be easier than removing an asphalt roof also.
