6-panel doors! Need ideas

Hi,

I don't have a picture -- yet -- but ...

My aunt and uncle are renovating an old brick house down in the city. They gutted the whole thing, including the solid wood 6-panel doors. These are awesome -- ugly and decreped, yes -- but awesome just the same! They even have the original crystal doorknobs!

Anyhoo, they offered them to me, and I'm looking to do something with them. The only curious thing is that they have glass in the top two panels. They had considered using them for the rehab, but didn't want clear glass on the bedroom doors (good thought!)

If I was into glass cutting, I'd do some lead glass inserts and see if I could have them traded out. Unfortunately, I'm not. So nice idea but unattainable.

Anyway, looking for ideas...

How about a table top for one with the reflection of candles on the glass panels or put glass or plexiglass over the whole surface and build a box under the original glass panel to hold a collection of small artifacts.

Maybe a large folding room divider.

A folding back drop for garden art.

Weave some wire over and use for garden trellis.

How about attaching several together and painting, decoupaging or cover the glass with padded fabric and trim around fabric and use as a head board?

Possibly use at side of windows for window treatment - maybe paint them or treat as above.

Use as a support for a large painting.

Put mirror in place of glass and in each panel, hang or prop against MBR or dressing room wall.

Possibly hinge and use as doors on open bookshelves or build bookshelf to the size of the door(s) and have a gorgeous armoire.

Build kitchen island, computer table or workbensch out of them, using the panels for the sides or in place of end legs.

Put them on a slider track to cover your patio doors.

Replace any light weight doors in your home.

Make a side board, kitchen or craft table with glass on top of the door table top.

Panel a small study or dining etc. wall with them. Go ahead keep the knobs, you can always find something to hang on a door knob.

Criss cross ribbon, belts, twine, rope or whatever on it and use it for a message board in kitchen or study. Back the glass with a picture of your liking, a dried pressed floral arrangement or your favorite word or phrase in large caligraphy.

That's it, I'm brain dead. G'nite.

jujybean, afsa is putting you in the best direction. The lumberyard will be able to help you. Consider this alternative - bi-fold doors, say 4 - 12" in a 4' opening. Yes, I was talking about using a solid wood slab ( not predrilled ) flush interior door, and creating the look of a panel door. This sounds like it would be difficult to do, and myself being a mechanic and not a carpenter my woodworking tools ( and skills ) are limited. I was hoping there was a router bit or something that would replicate the look of a panel door, but it sounds like I may have to use flush doors. I dont have any pictures of the doors because there isnt any doors there now. I just wanted to match the look of the 6 panel doors in the rest of the house. So anybody have a guess how much it would cost to have six 24x32" paneled doors custom made? Probably dont want to know.

What style is your house? What style are your furnishings? Are you asking about a 6-panel straight top vs. a 2-panel arch top, or are both arch tops? Whatever you choose should be the same as the others you will be installing later. Go with a smooth texture for interior doors. unless you are going for a rustic look.

Helmsman Spar Varnish is an OIL based product. Spar varnishes are concocted to have a more flexible film than conventional urethanes, which are very brittle. This is necessary as the panels on doors move with the change in the seasons. Helmsman also as a sun blocker in it, as it is intended for exterior use. Exterior varnished doors are a continuing maintenance problem unless they are totally sheltered from rain and sunshine. These work together to break down any finish. They will have to be periodically touched up or re-coated to keep them looking good. The Helmsman can actually produce a great spray pattern for a can. This is because of the nozzle and the fact that the liquid itself, having no pigment, is quite viscous. A trick I use when using spray cans is to heat the can by letting it float in a pot of hot water straight from the hot water tap, which is about 125 degrees. This does two things, it increases the pressure in the can, hence giving a better spray, and, being an oil based product, it thins out, much as the motor oil in your car when hot Obviously, spraying the door in a horizontal position totally removes the hazard of running or sagging. Have a good directional light reflecting off the door. Because there is no pigment, it is difficult to see how evenly your are applying the varnish. The glare of the light will help see the eveness of application. Remember, If it looks streaky when wet, it will look more so when dry! Use long, overlapping strokes.
