Using an old swing set frame for cucs next year?
Comments (5)Lead paint was banned for residential use in the US in 1978 and phased out of use in many other areas soon afterwards. I don't know for sure if that would affect outdoor swing sets but I doubt a 20 year old set would have lead paint on it. Power sanding is not a good idea either way. If there is anything harmful in the paint it would end up in your soil and be much more available to the plants than if it were on the swing set. Plants aren't going to be absorbing chemicals from intact paint through above ground parts. Just a bit of info about working with lead paint....mostly you don't want to have paint dust swirling about. Info from Wikipedia: "Working in a lead-safe manner means avoiding dry sanding, dry scraping, removing paint by torching/burning, the use of heat guns over 1100 °F, machine-sanding or grinding without HEPA filtered dust collection or HEPA-filtered vacuum. These methods are now prohibited by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) because they have been proven to create significant levels of lead dust during remodeling, renovation and painting. They must be avoided, especially in properties where children under age six reside. Adult workers using unsafe work practices or improper protective gear may also become lead-poisoned. I would use the swing set as is. It could be rigged up to be a great trellis....See MoreOld Paint on Metal Window Frames
Comments (3)To avoid scratching it, do not use any abrasive materials. Try acetone in a hidden area. It may soften the paint enough to remove it with a pliable plastic scraper. Michael...See MoreChanging the swing direction of a door?
Comments (3)You don't need to replace the door at all, like handymac says - if the door is plain, ie not panelled, you could just flip it end-for-end then it's oriented the right way. Any competent handyperson can rehang a door, I've lost count of how many I've done....you need a helper to hold it, basically hold it in place and mark on the frame where the hinges go. Don't forget to allow clearance top and bottom, I've also found a chisel or screwdriver with a block of wood under, is a handy fulcrum to lift the door (using your foot) to where it needs to be. Just some wood filler on the old hinge spots etc and you're done. You need a hammer, mallet and chisel, that's about it...oh plus a drill and appropriate hardware to redo the door lock if you need to. If the door's panelled, you need to spin the door 180 degrees, so you'll need to swap the hinge to the other side of the door, and reverse the lock....See MoreSalvaged yard swing
Comments (14)after stressing out for the last year after our dog turned our cushions to July Snow in the yard, I tried all kinds of plans, WM had the fabric but not the foam, the cushions there didn't fit well, couldn't find foam on line for less that $60 each, I came upon the idea of getting two chaise lounge (3 even sections) cushions, and centered one on the back and tucked the outside ends to a curve, and placed the other one on the seat centered. The extra length on next to the arms gave it just the comfyness it needed. I am so PLEASED- I did a little dance in the yard. My son thought I had lost my mind. Now I take them inside and can take my little catnaps once again......See Morerosiew
