Trash To Treasure

Please put on your thinking caps....

I just bought (really cheap) an assortment of tiny little glasses, cordial, champange, wine, etc..... They are so cute! Now what can I do with them for gifts.... There are one, two or three of each, no real sets.

I thought of mini plants, fill with candy, votives...

Any other suggestions?

I like using pretty glasses to put tea lights in. Set one at each place setting when you have a dinner party and the guests can take them home. Make up pretty name tags and tie them to the stem of the glass with ribbon to match your table linens.

The mini african violets do very well in those type glasses...I line them with a shred or two of moss and then put in the plant. The violets like to be pot bound, so they work out just right!

Hi nannerbelle ! Are deer going to be an issue? I'm discovering lots of shade shrubs. Elaeagnus is so fragrant now preceeding the wild honeysuckle. I hear it's a nitrogen fixer so I'm going to try planting under/near it and see if plantings thrive for the nitrogen. Sweetshrub. Kind of a nondescript with aromatic foliage of no particular beauty but the dark mahogany red flowers are just starting to open. Surprised that even the two foot tall seedlings nearby (hint..it seeds easily) are putting up blooms. Once the blooms are open, they are quite fragrant. The structure is airy/leggy so front with something evergreen and dense. Older varieties of the tall blueberry shrubs..they give nice background under tall canopy/forest edge and they turn the most wonderful salmon color foliage in fall. Lowes had the taller version on their racks. (just sayin'..I buy from independents) This yard is , some would say..infested with Rose of Sharon. All different colors. Bright light is all they ask for and they are thriving in the mostly acid soil. I think first do the skeleton background of shrubs and pay attention to prevailing breezes and sun path as you site your shrubs. Damp feet area in bright forest edge? Florida anise,ilex Then, drag out your old "Southern Gardener Book of Lists" by Lois Trigg Chaplin. I'm a fan of the loropetalums and having had the biggest ones, the tallest thinnest ones I'm now excited about the smaller dwarf variety with deep purple leaves to be a background for a lime green w/ crimson splash leaved Heuchera.(s) (many many) Astilbe is a reliable spring bloomer in bright shade.(oops..babelsrus mentioned that already). lemon verbena does fine in bright shade moist but well drained (elevated bed). Another favorite early bloomer perennial is siserinchium (sp). The cultivated one is Lucerne and a truer blue than the native ones which are more blue violet. Tricky part is siting them so you remember they aren't grass to be pulled up,sprayed or weeded out. So site them where later flowers will cover the grassy foliage. In between bursts of flowering when some gardens look monochromatic green..coleus here and there bring reliable color foliage. For that patchy sun spot or good morning sun til noon or so..I had the cottage look of mixed blackeyed susans with tall perennial ageratum. The blueviolet fuzz against the hard yellow orange petals around a fountain or birdbath was so pretty and easy care if you get the early weeds and grasses out.of the beds.

I don't grill, so I'd probably just roast the chicken with some vegetables, Ann T's high heat roasting method is custom made for a fast chicken dinner and things like sweet potatoes and parsnips roast well at that high temperature too. Toss the carcass in the crockpot the next day with some water, onion, carrot and celery and make stock. Let it simmer all day, strain out the vegetables, add some leftover chicken back in along with noodles or rice and you have soup. The pork I'd probably brine in cider, rub with herbs and roast too. That way I could stick a couple of baked sweet potatoes in the oven with the pork roast, maybe even baked apples for dessert. All quick, easy and ready in the oven! Off in another direction, the pork would be good as pulled pork in the crockpot too, with some BBQ sauce and served on bun or you could slice the tenderloin and use this recipe from Lars' niece, Amanda: Caramelized Pork Slices 1 pound pork tenderloin (we usually use pork chops) 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 Tbsp packed brown sugar 1 Tbsp orange juice 1 Tbsp molasses or maple-flavored syrup 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. pepper Cut pork into 1/2 inch slices. Spray 10-inch non-stick skillet w/ cooking spray; heat over med-high heat. Cook pork and garlic in skillet 6 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally, until pork is slightly pink in center. Drain if necessary. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cook about 2 to 5 minutes, until mixture thickens and coats pork. (Amanda Maedgen) Annie

Hi Rita, Southern Manitoba is on what was the bottom of large Lake Agassiz, centuries (millenia?) ago, so is quite flat and several rivers flow into the area. The area has developed some world-class systems of coping with floods - ran an expensive diversion around Winnipeg, the capital, where the Red River, coming up from Fargo, ND, joins downtown with the Assiniboine, coming in from Brandon, in the west, where the flood is bad, now. When they built that large diversion channel, about 40 years ago, I think, there was substantial criticism, but they've been thankful, several times since. To send some water to you, we'd have to haul it overland to drop into Lake Superior, then send it down through the Great Lakes. Or send it upstream down the Red River, then overland to the Mississippi, and upstream through one of the tributaries of the Mississippi, which wouldn't get it very close to you, I expect. So it looks like quite project. And no fishy stories included, either! At least your fish are large enough that the crows that caught some smaller ones in another member's backyard pool would have a hard time dealing with them - maybe the heron that was also a culprit would find them too hard to handle! I hope that you're keeping your lines on the back porch far enough under the roof that a high wind doesn't blow the rain in and wet your lines. Hope you're having a satisfying season. ole joyful

My most memorable wedding gift was a silver heart box engraved with a special message . But I think that something "personal" is always a good choice.(of course I am a sappy person ) Perhaps a family heirloom of some sort??? It is so hard to buy gifts nowdays as people have everything they need, etc. Do they have a registry ?

I used some misc. wine & champagne glases and made "lights" out of them and sold them at the X-mas craft show - cut a lamp shade from vellum - I punched figures out scallaped the bottum (use light colored vellum)- I filled the glass 3/4 full with those clear "rocks" (can't remember what they are called)used a flicker light ("the safe candle")sold like crazy!!

the people just repeat the ideas of what sunnie already suggested. if you have friends that partake in alcoholic beverages. you could give them a gift of champagne and add the little glass to the pouch or use ribbon or such to tie the glass onto the box. make sure they're as sparkly as the drink inside.

Fill them with spice mixes. Like chicken soup mix, or cinnamon and sugar, or Garlic salt and a big loaf of good bread. Maybe some really good jams or homemade jellys or seasoned butters. Use some colored sharpies to decorate. Fill with M&M's or nuts or something. If you know someone who likes lip gloss make them some lip gloss and fill a tiny cup. Fill it with bath salt or bubble bath. Wrap it with really nice wash cloths. What a fun way to get cash. Fill with bills folded to fit.I filled some puffes of cloth and stuffing with really good bath powder tied them with ribbons and set them in fancy bowls as party favors. Tons of stuff ya can do with glasses. Let us know what works for you.

For my husbands 50th birthday party I made candles out of wine glasses and drink glasses. I melted clear wax and put it a one inch pan lined with foil. When it was hard I cut it into ice cube size. Put one in wine glass and 3 in drink glass. Then for wine glass I tinted the wax a pinkish color, let it cool down a little so it didn't melt ice cubes. filled glasse. after i put wick in. then added toothpicks with painted beads on then( olives, cherries, etc.) hope this helps. PS for drink glasses I tinted wax brownish for rum and coake and added a stirrer.
