I'm the one that had/has the vitamins that were too big for me. I kept telling myself I'd use them (and I should have know otherwise) and eventually they were expired but I still have the 3/4 of the bottle I didn't use. I'm curious how you suggest one reuses expired vitamins. I'm in agreement that one should reuse if at all possible, but you must have a much greater imagination than me if you know how to reuse vitamins better than the suggestions in the thread this came up in which was "Expired Vitamins in the compost". I don't know about the brown paper post, but let me give you a scenario where I think you are very incorrect on your assumption that Freecycle would be the better option if I came across a roll of brown paper not in use and I had no other use for it but composting. If I put it into the compost, it will break down and provide food for much life including mine. No landfill material where it will take a lot longer to break down due to likely being doused with other chemicals from other trash. If I put it on Freecycle then someone possibly uses it for packaging. That packaging is not nearly as likely to get reused again and will likely go into a landfill because the number of people that don't reuse or compost is exponentially higher than those people like us that do. And Freecycle isn't just full of greenies. It's also full moochers or poor people looking for free stuff. It's a fact that neither of those groups is notorious for their recycling/composting habits. You might think I'm being harsh or politically incorrect, but try driving in a poor area and tell me how littered it is because the people just don't care. Can anyone here speak up from the south side of Chicago (specifically halstead street where the plastic bottles outnumber the blades of grass) or certain areas on the east side of Indianapolis, please? How about the poor areas of Gary, IN? Anyway, the proof is lying in all those yards and along those streets so I don't feel bad about my statement. The point is that the roll of paper is a lot more likely to end up in a landfill using freecycle and the benefit of reuse is largely reduced to less than the benefit of composting it. And I didn't even add in the gas used to transport the roll of paper if you use Freecycle. Let's consider the Freecycle person is like us, but doesn't compost. Instead, the person used the paper for kid projects and turned around and recycled it afterward. Good for them! But the environmental impact of the recycling (which uses fuel and emits lots of carbon and requires transportation) in the end is still larger than the impact of simply composting it. So my good intentions actually led to a worse impact. I find a lot of "environmentalists" tend to forget to take in the big picture. They only see the immediate effect and choose not to think further to the end result. It's why a lot of "environmentalists" buy bottled water. They think that recycling the bottle makes it okay and makes them green. They choose not to consider how much recycling adds to the waste stream, carbon emissions, and pollution. Instead, they throw the plastic into a recycling bin or reuse it a couple of times and then do so and then feel good about their decision to make this a better environment. They forget that all that was negated by the very purchase of the bottle of water in the first place. Are you taking in the big picture? Or are you seeing one simple act as the saving grace while ignoring the rest of the process? I don't think you are purposely ignoring it. But I do think a lot of people accidentally do with good intentions.

I too , am glad that it's resolved for you. I'm also glad to hear that Viking actually makes good on their no quibble pledge. But, I do have to say they could have saved themselves a lot of neg. publicity if they had informed their dealers and even their own in house support staff that they'll take back their products no questions asked in the 90 days . They'd have gotten a lot of goodwill for the same cost by just coming to pick up bo61's range when asked. Shame it took a weeks worth of internet ranting and a VP level decision to ACTUALLY make reality live up to the advertising . Hey , it's a start the right direction guys.

Yes, but I see that as a logical development of the ideal that had been in fashion since before the turn of the 20th century, bossyvossy. Recently, I was reading a book written in 1910 that talked about "preternaturally slim" models, and Colette wrote very early in her newspaper days about the "religion of hunger" followed by fashionable ladies. As more and more people managed to achieve it, they had to keep moving the goal posts, which is how we eventually wound up with heroin chic and pre-pubescent models.

I do not agree with the people saying it will cost "A LOT" more to salvage and resuse things. It's easy for someone who is spending other peoples money (like us contractors) to forget how much certain items actually cost new. If you have a full kitchen of cabinets that is in good condition, that's probably 6+ thousand that can be saved by reusing it for a granny flat. Sure the guys doing the demo don't get to hack and slash and use sledge hammers but if they know how cabinets are installed, which they should or you shouldn't have them working for you, they just have to locate the 4 ish screws per cabinet and remove them. Doing it this way really shouldn't take very much extra time IF ANY, and it will cause less mess, plus you save a couple bucks at the dump. But is everything worth it? No probably not. If your doors are cheap $100 doors from home depot or something like that, it might not be worth saving them and then hoping that they are the same widths you will need in the other building. But if they are good quality solid doors or some kind of custom, and they are fairly wide standard sizes like 2'8's, 2'10s and 3'0s, it's really not difficult to take out a door without destroying it. Pop the trim, run a sawsall down between the framing and the jamb, and put the door in the garage, easy as! Windows? Same thing. People talking about it taking so much time to clean things up and reuse them is BS. All of the steps to demo a vinyl window are generally identical whether you are saving it or not. Have your contractor pull them and set them aside, and clean up old caulking off of them yourself if you're worried about a little extra labor. Windows are one of those things that you might not want to try to design the new place based off of what you have sitting in the garage though, so you might consider either not keeping them, or only using them if they happen to fit in with what you want. The one other CON to consider is matching. Say you save 4 interior doors, then you go to make your additional unit, but you need 7 doors, can you still get the same style to match, or are you okay with them not matching?
