Restoring old metal chair - need help pls

I bought an old metal garden chair at the Thrift store this weekend for $5.00. I am wanting to restore and paint it since it has a lot of rust. I have tried sanding the rust off and it is not working too well. What else can I try or do I need to strip the whole thing and repaint ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just read somewhere that white vinegar dissolves rust, but don't leave it on there too long because it can dissolve the metal too. ~Anj

Try finding someone to sandblast it if it's badly rusted otherwise there are some paints that you can use which inhibit rust....check out Rustoleum brand paints.

Take the advice of an old horsewoman who has LOTS of tack (saddle, bridles etc) that need restoration and or upkeep. Go to a good tack web site and look up leather care. You do not want one that contains neetsfoot oil or that changes the color (darkens) the leather. I would think this would be a very good place to find good products. Horse people are probably the fussiest people regarding leather you will ever know. We pay thousands of dollars for saddles (more than most leather furniture) and so we give our equipment the very best of care. I had a leather sofa that I used Lexol cleaner and Lexol conditioner on. Looked lovely. Not greasy!

With all the talk about weatherstripping, here and elsewhere, I don't understand why there isn't more mention of the interlocking kind. It's original equipment on my 1913 windows and have heard mention of it here, google it successfully and it is the best thing I've ever seen or heard of. It's exactly what it says - interlocking. There's a folded piece of thin metal (zinc?) nailed along the length of each side of each sash and the stops. The top and bottom sashes interlock and slide up and down inside the strip on the stop. There is also interlock on the meeting rails and at top and bottom where a folded strip actually fits into a metal lined slot on the top/bottom of the sash. There's no way wind can penetrate. I don't know why it's so hard to find photos rather than drawings of them but if I ever get back to restoring windows I'll try to remember to make a point of posting a photo here. I have ancient triple track storms on most windows - I've only been able to find an old storm for one of my 28-30 windows (don't remember if I included the two attic windows in the original count) and no clue when they can be replaced. How old are they? How long does it take for aluminum to rust? They are heavy and tight, though and the combination produces no frost, no condensation, no air movement. I visited a neighbor who had just had "top of the line" replacements installed and could feel cold and plenty of air penetration (an honest to pete breeze.) Thanks everyone! I went out shopping for some more accessories today. Big, green basket and four cute fleece blankets for my kiddos to curl up on the couch with :) We usually all fight over one, lol. I saw the basket, loved it..and thought that would be something neat to put in it. I promise, they'll be over the moon when they see it :) Got a cute, little pot and put a plant in it to set on the table by the window. Moved a basket full of magazines over by the chair. Couple more pillows :) I'm trying! Tina, I'm not against orange. And I see where it could easily work in. But, having just ditched the red...I'm trying to hold off :) At first I just wanted creams, blacks, whites, different shades of greens. And just a few of that blue in the pillow you can see in the pic. It's a fun color, I'd never put with the green. But, I like it! And dh is going to build me a bookcase that will take up almost that whole back wall ! That little pic arrangement will go :) I can't wait to get that going. Hopefully in the next few wks. The blinds we got a few yrs ago at Wal-mart, and I'm crushed to say I think they've discontinued them :( I love them! And I was looking for the exact same thing this last weekend for our master bath. I ended up with something from Lowes, that I'm considering taking back. The wal-mart ones were a great price, and love the look! Maybe check your local wal-marts. Someone may still carry them?

Help needed to paint old furniture on my old-house front porch

Thank you Jane. You have a lovely porch too. I love your willow furniture. You are lucky to have trees to shade it. Ours gets morning sun and can get quite warm very early one. One of these days we want to close in our sleeping porch off the master bedroom with storm type windows all around to make it more of a three season porch. We've not used it in years. Used to go out there in the evenings. I used Windows Paint to the above virtuals. I have an original version of PhotoShop that came with one of those pens (by Bamboo) that a friend gave to me since they already had PhotoShop. I think they run around a hundred dollars or so. I've not looked at them for a couple years now. Both Adobe and Corel have free online trials of their photo editors. I've tried them both and liked different things about each one so I never made up my mind which to buy. Now that I have the Adobe from my friend I should ask for the Corel for Christmas from my hubby.

I always use a product called "Naval Jelly", I think it is usually found in the automotive department. It is thick and pink and you paint it on generously and let it sit for a while according to the directions and then wash it off with soap and water. Be certain you don't put it on and then leave it on for an extended period. After washed, allow to dry thoroughly and then spray a rust-proof primer and paint with spray enamel and it will look gorgeous.

I found a large metal tray like something they would have in a restaurant with a folding stand and it was terrible looking. I got it for 2 bucks at a yardsale and my DH thought I was nuts. But I painted it black enamel and then painted the tray with a black marble effect, stenciled a doily on top of that and then added a single painted pink rose and it is one of my favorite items.

We restored numerous metal seats and a bench by sanding with a wire brush attached to the drill and a wire brush on the angle grinder. This got off all the loose stuff and smoothed down the edges. Be sure to wear goggles. Then we coated it with Rustoleum to stop the rust and top coated it the color we wanted.
