Restoring old metal chair - need help pls

I bought an old metal garden chair at the Thrift store this weekend for $5.00. I am wanting to restore and paint it since it has a lot of rust. I have tried sanding the rust off and it is not working too well. What else can I try or do I need to strip the whole thing and repaint ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just read somewhere that white vinegar dissolves rust, but don't leave it on there too long because it can dissolve the metal too. ~Anj

Try finding someone to sandblast it if it's badly rusted otherwise there are some paints that you can use which inhibit rust....check out Rustoleum brand paints.

BUT....it's also a chair..... And while it might not have the salability as an antique one may wish....it's still a usable piece of furniture. You could sell that chair for just what you paid....but then you will have to go buy something to take it's place. Antiques that serve a purpose are different to me than those things you buy and stick in a cupboard in hopes that they will appreciate in value....or worse yet....collecters items. I have a round oak table....bought a long long time ago, before the golden oak boom....so I got a huge bargain. They the bottom dropped out of the golden oak market, and not many years later that table is now worth about 10 times what I paid. If I had invested the money I paid some 45 years ago....likely I would have had more than I could sell that table for....BUT....all these years I have had a table for eating, for homework for projects.......and it's still worth about 10 times what I paid. Is there any way to restore old chrome?

You could try the metal look spray paint, would need to remove the rust and corrosion, and apply a rust converter, prime, and paint.

Cyn, That is the way I had it arranged prior to this set-up. I really liked it, except for the fact that it was akward to always have to sit sideways to watch the TV, or sit in the chair apart from DH, KWIM? Plus, the TV was lost on the huge blank wall. Thanks for the compliments on the baby pics. Good idea to save the chair for grandbabies. I'm a person who gets rid of everything, but i like the idea of saving the chair & ottoman. So my 4 year old and I rearranged this morning, and I like it! The only tricky part will be running the cable over the fireplace somehow, but I'll let DH worry about that. (Why can't somebody invent wireless cable/satellite? It would solve so many decorating problems! LOL). What do we think? Better, right? Ad Lissa, you were totally correct about the fireplace wall being a different color. I was cleaning the walls today and noticed the difference at the corner. I can't believe I've never noticed that before. It is just a shade darker. So what to do with the fireplace? And this huge blank wall behind the couch? And the train table will be brought down to the basement when DH gets home, promise! Do you think I should seek out a square ottoman/coffee table type thing? What about an area rug? New seating area. Fireplace is to left, not visible. I moved the toybox and hung the painting on the wall. View with fireplace and curio cabinet: Chair seating area in front of window. I realize this is dark. My iphone does not have a flash. No chance of John Jeliff.....too different. I agree, bit of a deco feel....but I think it may be earlier than 1900....but not much!! It's wonderful!....that face!! Great set!

I always use a product called "Naval Jelly", I think it is usually found in the automotive department. It is thick and pink and you paint it on generously and let it sit for a while according to the directions and then wash it off with soap and water. Be certain you don't put it on and then leave it on for an extended period. After washed, allow to dry thoroughly and then spray a rust-proof primer and paint with spray enamel and it will look gorgeous.

I found a large metal tray like something they would have in a restaurant with a folding stand and it was terrible looking. I got it for 2 bucks at a yardsale and my DH thought I was nuts. But I painted it black enamel and then painted the tray with a black marble effect, stenciled a doily on top of that and then added a single painted pink rose and it is one of my favorite items.

We restored numerous metal seats and a bench by sanding with a wire brush attached to the drill and a wire brush on the angle grinder. This got off all the loose stuff and smoothed down the edges. Be sure to wear goggles. Then we coated it with Rustoleum to stop the rust and top coated it the color we wanted.
