I stopped at an out of the way sale and everything was half price. Got a chair with a broken cane seat to put flowers in. The chair is curvy and different than any chair I've seen. 3.50. Also a 24 x 30 framed cross stitch on some kind of linen dated 1863. The work is beautiful and the frame is so heavy, just a few nicks in the frame. I think I may have found something cause the name of the woman is on it and I'm going to research it today. 9.00 What do I seal this chair with to protect it in the garden?

I've been making wooden stuff for outside use - and I bought spray lacquer. Stinky - but it puts a good coat on !

Thompson's Water Seal works best for me. I use it on any wood or metal "Objet de Art" that I put in the yard!!!!!!!

Sounds like your large light in the middle is a mogul base. You can still get them, but they're getting harder to find. I can't see a switch on the bottom, so assume it does not have the night light. Many in that time-frame did, especially if it had that onyx insert on the base. It would have a small switch on the base. I agree with Linda this one looks forties up to mid fifties. I don't know about the shade. So many of them were covered in a plastic film many people left on the shades to protect them from dust, it may be original, but most of the old ones had scorch marks where heat from the incandescent lights left their mark. I also suspect it may be a replacement somewhere down the line, albeit a retro one. The shallow-depth cylinder style (mid century modern) shade starts to become more common by mid-fifties, as opposed to the inverted vase-shape and is not so often seen in this more traditonally styled lamp.

Painting my garage sale find

Someone was giving a way a rocking chair down the road, picked it up and took it home. Too weak to sit in but I painted it with some Rustoleum for metal baseboards, sand color, and put it in the front yard with flowers in it. Should last rtwo or three years. A 2 step stool we picked up and painted with automotive paint. Using it for an indoor plant stand. Point is, use whatever you have and want for a color. Clean as needed but don't make a big production out of it. For $1 you can enjoy it for a year, pitch it and buy something new.

Marine varnish is probably the best for outside.Think about it,it's used on boats and boats are in the water all the time,and look how well it holds up.

I don't want to tear this apart cause you can tell it's been profeesionally framed but it looks like linen or something like that. It's very large for a hand worked piece. Maybe it's worth something.

First it is called a Sampler. Second WOW! great find and what a bargain.
OH yes Jess, have the sampler appraised or get pics on a forum for antiques and needlework and ask for best/amature(sp) estimates. I'm sure there is a few places to ask here on THS. I saw one not to long ago on Antique Road Show valued at $3,500.00. An early signed piece from 1863. Old, slight fading and the frame was HEAVY, dirty, had a few medium nicks and just plain undecored wood.
