Trash To Treasure

need a stand for my fan... see pic

I have a fan that I bought a few years ago and only used about 3 months. It even has a remote control and I like it a lot. However, during a move, I broke the plastic that holds the stand in place off. I was thinking of using some PVC pipe to make a new stand for it. Maybe some of you have an idea that would help me to keep it out of the garbage. When the plastic broke off, I like an idiot threw the original stand away. Thanks in advance :o)

Oh Boy, those are really nice fans, rotten dilemma. The only thing I can come up with is using a broom stick for it to stand up on. Or, you might want to use a garden umbrella iron stand to attach it to but those things are around $23 a piece.

Maybe you could check out the manufacturer of the fan online and see if you could buy just that part. Just a suggestion. Good luck! Carol

This is a re-post of my comment from the thread on pine bark mulch. I don't know just how hot it has been in E.TX, but if the temps are anywhere between 90 and 100, your plants are too living too warm to convert nutrients to energy. This is how I lower the soil temp without having to move my plants into shade: I use pine bark almost exclusively for my figs. It's lighter and airier than many bagged mulches, so it's better at regulating soil temperature, as well. I prefer the "mini-nuggets". My figs seem to love it, both in-ground and in pots. Do check that the "pine bark" you buy is mostly PINE BARK. Some of it contains oak, pine or cypress shavings, as well. I would warn that pine bark is slightly acidic, so as it breaks down to compost you can either replace it, or add a bit of lime to the soil. One caveat: my figs tend to root into that nice airy mulch, especially in humid weather. If you leave your figs in-ground for the winter, provide extra mulch on the root zone to protect any surface roots. ***One other use I have for pine bark is for double potting. I have a couple of figs in a very hot full-sun, concreted area; and to prevent cooking the roots, I place the potted fig in a larger plain, unglazed CLAY pot (two sizes bigger, at least), fill the gap between the the two pots with pine bark, and water the bark well. The evaporation from the nuggets and clay pot cools the root zone by several degrees, without keeping the fig roots too wet. The figs will root into the pine bark if left alone, but I just turn the inner pot every few days and it solves that problem. Of course, this means using large, heavy, EXPENSIVE pots, but it's worth it for the way my figs are growing!*** ***I checked yesterday (6-28-09) when the air temp here was 93. The soil temp in my double-potted figs was 81 on the shady side, 83 on the sunny side, in full sun, at 4pm.***

Style and age would be a lot easier to tell with -close up photos, especially of hardware and the sides of the drawers -better lit photos -photo with drawers in and doors closed -picture of the top to see if a "top half" is indeed missing As it is I can vaguely see the inside of the door looks like it might be oak and that's about it.

I don't know the style of home or the neighbourhood but I think you may be leaning a little heavy on more neutral tones and a colour pallette without a lot of variation. With a black island and what sounds like dark granite could the room end up being a little muddy? I like the finish on the cabinets but for me the door style is a little fussy. It seems like more contrast in the space might be good but without seeing the room or some of the other elements it's hard to get a feel for whether black would be the best way to get that contrast. First, congrats on building your new house! Very exciting. My MW drawer isn't in our island so no picture, but in addition to the electrical question I'm wondering: It looks in your picture like the island counter has an overhang of several inches on all 4 sides (can't tell for sure) and a corbel in the center of each side. Where were you planning on placing the MW? Under the corbel? That seems awfully low. Or were you thinking of having 2 corbels on either side of the MW space? That would make sense to me so it could be higher, but you wouldn't want much overhang above it. So my preference would be sink side, centered between 2 corbels, with only a standard counter overhang. For an under-counter MW, I really like having a drawer, so you can place and retrieve items from above. (That's personal preference though.) natevalsmom - beautiful kitchen! That little broken piece looks like it might be enough to glue a piece of PVC to. I imagine you could use the purple PVC stuff that glues them tight.

But what about the stand at the bottom.

you and someone else could take turns holding it to cool each other. but i have a suggestion. throw the fan away and buy a new one with stand. the worry isn't worth it.

We live in such a disposable society. If that is what I wanted to do, dustyknees I wouldn't have made this post. I'd have thrown it away and bough a tower fan instead. Thanks for the suggestion. (NOT) Does someone asking for a way to keep something out of the dumpster sound like they want to instead throw it IN the dumpster and buy something new just because it's easier? Did you use logic when you wrote that? Is this the trash to treasure forum, or am I confused?

freak. huh.
two words: duct tape. many colors to choose from to blend in with your decor.
if that doesn't make your teeth rattle. i have another suggestion. find an old or new floor lamp. minus the lamp fixture. the fan just might fit into the top opening of that lamp stand.might need to use some cardboard paper to make it a snug fit. is that logical?

I had the same thing happen to my fan I used in my laundry room.I put a hook up in the corner of the ceiling and hung the fan from the hook.It worked like a charm!

PVC pipe.....for a homemade stand.
Even if you decide not to make a stand, use the
fan blades to make a 'flower' for the garden, and the
metal cage pieces as planters-hang them with chain....
