Melissa - go to the Growing from Seed forum and read through the many FAQs there - especially the one called How to get started? and the one called My seedlings are growing, now what? You'll find all kinds of info to make your next attempt more successful Lights, lights, lights. You simply have to have at least one fluorescent shop light for it to work well. And give more thought to which seeds you start early. In your zone it is much too early to pre-start beans and cucumbers since they gorw fast but can't be planted out into the garden until the soil warms up about 60-65 degrees, perhaps 6-8 weeks from now for you? Broccoli can be started early since it can go into the garden much, much earlier. Try some lettuce and cabbage now too. The long lank seedlings you now have may possibly be saved by transplanting them deeply - up to just below the leaves - into another container and then given much more light. Sun damage will happen like that, yes. :/ It's a bummer. I envy those cristatas! The Haworthia cymbiformis 'variegata' is absolutely gorgeous. I have debated about ordering that very plant off ebay, but I have ebay seller fear and haven't; that and shipping costs just kill me. But finding it locally probably isn't in the cards, so I may break down and do it pre-Christmas. The Haworthia limifolia var. ubomboensis, which I too have, is really nice as well. My Haworthia are the only succulents I have in the house, and they're nice company at the window in light shade. Haworthia are generally not full-sun-lovers and are pleased in shade/light shade. Graptopetalum paraguayense is an awesome plant. :) And the Dudleya candida is gorgeous. Doing individual searches of each plant will result in a lot of great advice. Your collection's great!

Thanks! Seesharee, I am going to just store them for the summer. May use them in another room. I just love them and can't bear to part with them for now! LOL Brutus, I am not sure if it is washable or not. I got it from JCPenney's. Sarschlos, I either have to put it back in that corner, or in front of a window. Or, it is right in front of you when you walk in the room, where the chest of drawers is in this picture.

I think a low boxwood hedge would look nice around your patio. It would frame it in and create a garden room of sorts. It will also give you year round greenery with low maintenance. We did that around our terrace and it looks nice. I don't know what variety we used but it's a low growing one that we keep around 24". You mentioned that you had small children in your fence post, and a hedge would keep them from running through a garden bed - shortest distance between 2 points being a straight line and all. If you went with boxwood, just be sure to plant to allow for growth so it doesn't grow to cover your bricks. It looks like your soil needs some amending with a good bedding mix before you plant anything there.
