need to fix up a mirror

i have a mirror that i took after my lil' sis' didnt want it anymore. it's kinda beat up and the edges are ugly, there are big metal clips holding the glass and wood together...does anyone have any good ideas i could use to fix it up? (dont worry, i plan to use goo-gone to get rid of the stickers some day) ;D

What a wonderful mirror. Resilvering is expensive so maybe you can paint the mirror with glass paint. Glass paints are found in all craft stores. I hope you can get some ideas from the site below.

What a big mirror ! It does show signs of age though --- If that was mine - I'd cut some of it up and use it for mosaics -- and maybe use some pieces of it as some sort of garden project . Mirrors in the garden can be striking !

kjmama, I've just spent the last couple of days putting the finishing touches on my renovated bathroom (regular little bathroom, but it looks much prettier now. I'll post pictures soon). Anyway, I wanted to say that I think it's really important to work out a clear "vision" for your bathroom before you start shopping. You need to decide on a style (vintage cottagey? organic spa? glamourous hollywood? whatever you like...) And decide on a color scheme -- I'd suggest two main colors and an accent color. I assume since you painted the walls pink, that you made that choice with a certain look in mind. And pink will be one of your main colors. Are you looking for something feminine and pretty? If so, I would suggest painting the vanity a creamy white and adding sparkly knobs. The curvy mirror would work great with that look, as would the armoire. You could do a lot with vintagey accessories (like crystal perfume bottles). And I'd suggest picking a piece of art that really captures the feeling you are going for. What about that Degas painting of a woman drying herself after a bath? The key is to decide on your look and then really commit to it. Good luck.

We have waterlox on our floors, and to recoat we just clean with TSP cleaner and mineral spirits, we don't even sand. Waterlox has tung oil in it, but your new tung oil is probably breaking down the surface. It's always safest to call the experts, I wouldn't use acetone unless the experts told me to use it, you will take some of the old waterlox off, and I'm not sure you want to do that, I think you can clean up the tung oil without starting all over.

I wouldnt worry too much, if it doesnt match in, then just give that wall another coat of paint. Thats why I suggested buying a gallon, instead of a quart of paint. Matching 12 yr old paint exactly, will probably not happen. Even the paint forumlas have changed in the last few years. However, you can paint one wall, just make sure you tape off the corners, so you dont get paint on the opposite walls.

that is beautiful.....I saw on a home decorating show where they took a mirror like that and took off some of the mirrow glazing and then painted a silver gray on the back. It of course showed thru but it was beautiful. You can make it a picture frame looking edge or random.

check with a home or hardware store and see if they have the stuff to take it off...seems like it was a reasonable price.

On another show, they marked a good border and used sandpaper to remove the damaged mirror.

Just jump in and do it....it will be great.

I've used very thin strips of wallpaper borders pasted around the edges of old mirrors. Borders that already have one side with a pretty cut out design work best, or cut out a pretty ivy border and paste it on. Or paint a nice light abstract design just around the edges with glass paint.

Nice antique mirror, I'd hesitate to cut it up.
