Comments (24)Kate, Please accept my sympathy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I saw your post early this morning and I've been thinking all day about what to say. When my mother passed away right before Thanksgiving I couldn't decide whether I was relieved or sad. We had already lost her to Alzheimer's 5 years ago. She would have been 89 this spring and she was such a wonderful strong, smart, talented and funny woman that I spent a long time being angry that she was gone even before she left us forever. Someone said in an earlier post that they still saw glimmers of their mother despite the Alzheimer's and this was so true for my mother even until the day before she died. Oddly, after my mother died I started to realize that I had her back as she was for most of her life, as I and my brothers and sister remembered her. During her long decline we were dealing with everything of the day to day she needed but couldn't do for herself. After she went to be with the God she so devoutly believed in she came back to us in all of our great memories. One blessing we had, or maybe two, in choosing a headstone: 1) our cousins who had gone through burying their mother earlier in the year talked us out of making an immediate decision, and 2) even when we thought we were capable of making a rational decision the company that specialized in grave markers told us we had to wait until spring because the ground was still frozen otherwise we might have had pink granite because my sister insisted that was my mother's favorite color even though everyone knew she only told my sister that because my sister loved it so much. My sister finally admitted that she knew Mom was only humoring her when she was a pre-teen infatuated with pink, LOL. Hang in there. I know your Mom was wonderful and how much it hurts but hang on to your sister and the rest of your family because they know how great your Mom was too....See MoreGranite BS Alert: One-Piece (no seam) Granite for L-Shape??
Comments (21)Thanks all, very very helpful info. Boxerpups, special thanks for these great photos, would never guess where the seams are in your counters. If things would work out so well for us, I would prefer they use caution with my handpicked slab and add a seam. You make a very good point about my confidence in the fabricator also. I think that must be the true source of my uneasiness. I do feel they are competent because they give all the right answers to questions (that I learned to ask from this forum), and they are well established in this area, but I just didn't click with the salesman and I only overlooked that because our contractor, who is wonderful, overall likes them. The owner also is great. So every time the salesman tells me something, I don't trust him. So I think what I will do is ask about their ability to hide seams and show them your photos if you don't mind--to give them an idea what our expectations are. Then I can put this to rest and move on. Thanks so much again everyone! And please stay tuned for backsplash questions, that is the next step!!...See MoreChose granite today! Which piece for island??
Comments (9)Thanks everyone! We went back to see it again yesterday because I had a couple of things I wanted to look at after having the sample at home in our light and as I looked at the the pictures I started questioning the decision (because I question all major decisions on this remodel!). After seeing it again we still love it. The photos really don’t capture it well, it is so pretty and the colors go so well with the cabinets. I really like the one with the “river” in it too. That was the one we both said “this one” to and then had to narrow down the second slab out of a few. I know that we need to plan the whole room, not just the island. I think that we should be able to make it work to use a chunk of the river in the island though. That is the stone we were both initially drawn to so I think I want to keep as much of it as one piece as possible. We really can’t go in with cardboard pieces as it is still at the stone shop. Once we get to that point we will sit down with the fabricator and go through how it will be later out. I will definitely insist on a meeting when he is laying it out because there are several elements we want included. I don’t want my favorite parts to end up as remenants....See MoreRemoving small granite trim piece from granite backsplash
Comments (7)The second picture doesn't make sense to me. The front of the range looks to be 3 inches past the front of the cabinets. On the other hand, the rear burners are already close to the backsplash. Well, anyway ... Before you do anything else, pull the range out and check behind the trim piece to see if the backsplash extends down to the top of the counter. If it doesn't, you'll still have a problem even if you manage to remove it without damaging the backsplash. Have you adjusted the range legs? If not, you might be able to lower the range enough to slip it under the trim piece. If necessary, I'd even consider removing the legs, as that would gain you another 1/4 or 1/2 inch of clearance - yes, extreme, but it might be your only option....See Morelynne_melb
